I play a Yamaha 17 C 4 which supposed to be about the same size as the bach 1 1/4 C. I am extremely happy with this mouthpiece. Every notes from low to high is clear and full.

I suffered for years from cutting Bach mouthpieces. Then I could accidentally borrow a Bach 2C and it changed my life immediately. I keep sticking to that now although I can play much else too now as long as they are "flat".. The high point is close to the bowl so it doesn't feel big. Checked with a little 1 eurocent, the diameter seems however bigger than given up (16.5) . The 5C plays much more colorful. It sounds still bright but in a neutral and friendly way, without ear damaging piercing. The 1.5 C plays more flexible, more wide spreading and big. It was my favorite for years but the high register is stuffy for me. (The megatone 2C version is "bigger" but sounds even more neutral). The 3C is really brighter, more commercial and will most likely please more people. (for me it's good for Es trumpet only) This mouthpiece plays easily high, is very versatile and flexible enough after learning how to control it but few play on it.

Really enjoying your mouthpiece demos. Two things: Early Bach mouthpieces apparently suffer from shocking inconsistencies due to tooling wear. It is said that they didn't account for tool wear and thus some 3c mouthpieces are larger than later 1c mouthpieces. I think you must have found one! Second, is there any possibility of you using a spectrum analyzer to show the difference between your own mouthpiece on the HTC6 and each mouthpiece you analyse like this? Sure would be interesting.

Hi Nicholas, I have planned to post videos comparing many different mouthpieces as you have requested. Concerning inconsistent mouthpieces marked the same size, this problem is true of older and newer Bach mouthpieces due to many variables including the change of tooling, machinery, programming and vendors over time. I have measured modern Bach 3C mouthpieces that are also nowhere near the standard size!

You Sir,are a wealth of info. Thank you. Do smaller throats take less air to produce a nice tone?
@harrelsontrumpets
2 жыл бұрын
Yes, smaller throats will reduce air flow. When combined with the correct backbore, the tone can be more open than a larger throat.

So which mouthpiece according to you is better for large intervals and upper registers?
@harrelsontrumpets
5 жыл бұрын
Your question has a surprising answer. You may need to fine tune both your Rim/Cup dimensions and your impedance at the leadpipe venturi. This can be achieved with the Harrelson VGR system and the 5MM Mouthpiece system.

Which would not help anyone because almost every traditional mouthpiece bowl looks very similar. A deeper understanding of the mouthpiece is necessary to make any useful assessments.

It depends on your dental structure and playing preferences. I would recommend the Harrelson 5MM for you.
