They are good looking units but disappointed that the ditch lights don't work. For the price they should have working ditch lights. Great review. Scott

James The prototype units are mechanically no longer E9. When they restore them they got rid of E9 prime movers and control stands and replaced them with a more modern primary mover. In Pentexs Elegant E9s. Steve Lee discusses the Restoration.

very nice engines James!!!!! I have a life like proto 2000 southern Pacific E-7 unit that I am restoring. I think like like personally helped Walther's bring them to what they are today with the detailing. even if they didn't. from personally owning one. it is nice to see that part of life like,s legacy is still in these engines. also awesome video sir.

When rebuilt, the two 1,200 HP prime movers were removed in each unit in favor of a single 2,000 hp V-16, so they are no longer 2,400 hp. The noses were "botoxed," removing the nose door and louvers (NS's ex-B&O F units got the same treatment) which makes them look like a Kardashian.

Another fine video. One question ... did you speed match the locos or did they run that well together right out of the box? I couldn't see any noticeable 'jockeying'. Thanks and keep up the good work. Len S

Do these units have the helical gearing that Walthers is usually noted for? Also, are the units traction tire equipped (I am guessing not based on the tractive effort) and are all the axles powered? Otherwise, an excellent review, as usual! (P.S.: Any idea why the sky rocketing price increase on the HO scale passenger cars recently? Lastly, you have the 'start' of a beautiful passenger car consist and by the way, have a very pleasant to watch video in pretty much every one of your presentations! Thanks again, for what you do!

Good review. Are the ditch lights and beacon operational? I know that tsunami limits the number of light outputs somewhat. These may be worth a LokSound or TCS Wow upgrade, though I don't think either produces the 645 non-turbo. Time to nerd out: -I do like it that these seem to be non-turbo 645 diesels. UP replaced the original 567's, so that these things are functionally double GP38s. -Railroads such as the Santa Fe, Rio Grande, Western Pacific, and Great Northern did not tend to favor E-units because of their A-1-A truck configuration. Although each E-unit had dual prime movers, and thus the same horsepower as two F-units, the A-1-A truck did not provide the same tractive effort, which was important for mountain railroading. -The B-units actually did have control stands, if not full cabs. If you look at two of the porthole windows (toward either end of the unit), you see hinges on the side. A hostler could move the B-unit independently around the yard or locomotive facility for servicing and spotting. Most even had bells and horns for safety.

Loved the video review. I just have one question about the paint scheme. I thought UP used a darker green or grey on the top of the hood? I do not remember seeing this "lime green" color. I am guessing this is the way the real units are painted...

The only thing that I found with these from Walther's is the trucks are to rigid to the chassis ,if you remove the body ,you'll see the front gear tower ,pull off the tower clip that covers the work gear, file down the tabs on the cover that holds it on the frame and put the clip back on ,than the body . Now that truck can role to the sides , this is almost a must do ,any track imperfections in a curve will have the unit jump the rails , if you read this , try this , specially if you bank your curves like I do !!!! PASS THIS TIP ON

The UP "E"s are not really what they appear to be. These last three were rebuilt ( I think in the '90's ) with a single prime mover in place of the two originally. With other upgrades at that time, these are actually GP 38's in an "E" body. The unused fans were kept for the classic appearance. So the single engine start up is correct for the modern UP 'E'. To backdate it, you would need to have a double engine start up.

David LuBrant easiest way to differentiate the two are the trucks. F units (excluding FL-9) have 4 axles housed in 2x2 sets, while E units have 6 axles housed in 2x3 sets.

Problem is no other E8/9's look or sound like UP's E Series. They have single power, different sounds. However if Walthers do the originals in proto type with sound... However I have converted several of the older ones to DCC/Sound using MRC or Tsunami Micro 827018 decoders. Tsunami is a dual decoders with the dual motor start up as well. Really great.
