Just wanna point out that the infantry vs. infantry combat is not entirely true, there are certain maps were infantry combat is the norm and Cities which are considered infantry strongholds are never regarded as "safe" until YOUR infantry is in there, which heavily incentivises infantry combat. In fact ground vehicles are reliable only around your towns. It would have been nice to also mention the deck building system and the way you choose from those 1400 units :P, otherwise great review!

I think the most problematic part of the game is indeed the learning curve; not because it's too hard to learn, but because those who have played for three iterations of the game will massacre new players mercilessly. I had the great luck of having first a newbie friend to play with and figure the basics out with, and then a *very* experienced friend to bash my head in until I learned. So, my main piece of advice would be first to look at the Win-Rate of your opponent. If it's astronomically high, run. If you play someone, tell them you're new. Most players will be willing to teach, to give tips, and so on. The game is extremely fun and rewarding after that learning curve is breached.

"Better" is relative. A lot of older players complain that it ruined their favorite units through rebalancing. I personally like it more - the addition of amphibious capability to certain transports, more unique units and so on. The naval component is a bit crap, though.

As an Officer Trainee for the US Army, I find this game cool and enjoyable but also terrifying as if really drives home how dangerous and extremely effective we've become at killing each other. That said I also benefit from inherently understanding all of the weapon capabilities for the US (and most of the NATO forces in general) in the game and then by comparison the other factions. So overall I like this game but I disagree that it desensitizes people to the horror of war. You just need to really think about what the hell are you actually doing to each other when you play it

Only bring joy to those that slaughter the townspeople (Honestly, there aren't civilians in this game, but sometimes I wonder if maybe I did kill a few innocent folks as I fired the full force of my artillery onto some small village).

"If a match ever does get to a point where foot soldiers actually are shooting at eachother with rifles, then both sides are probably doing things very very wrong" Wrong. Infantry is actually the strongest unit type in the game, the better infantry units will happily annihilate the most expensive tanks the enemy can bring out with only 1-2 shots, if they make the mistake of getting too close and/or you maneuver them close. Infantry is absolutely crucial in making pushes to clear forests and towns of enemies, and also for holding strongpoints with forest or building cover nearby.

This is the review that made me try out wargame. 7 years later I am still playing and it's in my top favorite games of all time. The only thing that he's got wrong in his review is when he says that the game is all about killing enemies with indirect fire, and that if you are engaging in close range you are doing it wrong. Well this is not true. In fact, arty spam is considered BM and noobish in the community. What I love about this game is all the different layers going on. The slow movement of the troops on the ground vs the fast paced, reflex based gameplay of playing with planes which are incredibly strong, but costly and fragile, making for an amazing risk/reward mechanic that breaks the slow pace of the rest of the gameplay for a moment. Also, you never know when the enemy will use their planes and you'll have to react so you're always on your toes.

One thing that you wouldn't know about from this being your first Wargame though is the massive French bias. Seriously, they moved the date forward so the French could get some really good units (Caesar, Rafale), which are either grossly cheaper than the Red For (or even fellow Blu For) alternatives, or far superior for the same Price, and then didn't give units of a similar nature to every other country. This comes to a head with the Eurocorp coalition deck (France/Germany), which has NO weaknesses. Did I mention Eugene, the creators of the game, was French?

"If a match ever gets to a point where foot soldiers are actually shooting at each other with rifles, then both sides are probably doing things very very wrong". No, Gorg. Infantry is the single most efficient unit type in the game. Matches actually *revolve* around securing the outsides of vital forests and towns with your armor so you can stuff infantry into them, where they are very hard to dislodge without the enemy's own costly pushes. For anyone looking at this review in 2018, look up the "Honhonhon guide to wargame", it's concise and explains the basics very well. Razzmann's tutorial videos are also great. Ignore the "200 page guide", not only is it excessive but it's also very outdated. Also, look up "Wargame Bootcamp", the community for this game is still alive, niche, but pretty alive. It even has more players than Eugen's newer Steel Division, so I think that says something about its quality.
@osgoroth01
6 жыл бұрын
Also, for newer players, it is better to learn in 1v1's in Conquest mode as opposed to destruction. Conquest actually forces you to learn how to play the game and fight for territory, while Destruction encourages players who sit just idly hanging back killing things
@ineednochannelyoutube5384
5 жыл бұрын
@@osgoroth01 I disagree. The 200 page guide is a very concise and comperhensive tutorial, that is both an entertaining read and teaches the basics well. Nothing in it is complicated enough to be considered outdated. The only thing it lacks is pointers on operational scale manouvering, but thats better learned from the Art of War or something similar.

About the way war is used for gamefodder: I played the previous game in the series and in my first match I played as my home country and was like 'fuck yeah my people are gonna kick some ASS!" But then I got slaughtered. And sad. So I got better. But I found that no matter how good I was, every victory required me to take some pretty terrible casualties. It's like it's by design. Probably because it is. That's a subtle but emotionally impactful thing, because now when I play, I feel a sense of helpless responsibility for these little digital army men who I want to keep alive but, unlike many other games, are inevitably going to die in their hundreds so that I can have my sweet fleeting moment of pretend victory. That's a good commentary on death in war.
@Nickuncle

+DanTheDragonslayer Yeah I agree. Watching the replays from up close and listening to that shrill sound when a tank gets hit by AT is haunting. You know that inside that tank are the charred corpses of men whose wives they'll never see again. It's also why I try to coordinate my tank advances better. Basically amass enough tanks and some AA and recon and push forward, secure the AO, land troops, set up defenses, keep pushing. I also learned that smoke coverage can help a bit as well.

There are a lot of diverse units, this is a good thing. People often play with national decks. In 1v1, this means that if you were to memorize the stats for each unit (you don't need to do this), you would only have to memorize up to five units per unit type. THE UNIT STAT CARD ELIMINATES THE NEED TO MEMORIZE THE STATISTICS FOR EVERY UNIT!

As mentioned, the tutorial is a joke, and the community is rude and brutal. Be prepared to spend 500 hours on this game before you can hope to break even in most battles. yep, it looks awesome but it looks on the border of being to much simulation for my taste making it to much of a hustle to enjoy (more simulation doesn't translate to fun necessarily) ...it comes to taste...if you enjoy simulations, becoming an expert in procedures and stats playing battles that could come to 2 hours of play then this game is for you. On the other hand if you are into games just for fun want realism without going to the extreme, 30 40 minute battles or less then there is this mod for World in Conflict game called Modern Warfare mod its does the job good...in my case I stick to shorter games that haves some realism without making me an expert on an unreal world investing chunks of my life (If it comes to that I'll join the army).

louiethepitt I am trying to get into it at the moment, its not the easiest game to pick up. There appears to be no in-game tutorial. It seems a rather dry intellectual game, and not at all immersive like Company of Heroes (which some Wargame and Men of War fans deride as being too arcadish). So far it does not seem that much fun. That said, I really do not know the game at all. I am going to watch a few more KZitem tutorials and see if I can't start to get the hang of it. So far... I just don't get it.

Harry Flashman yes, I own European Escalation and in my opinion it really over complicates the game to the point that playing a game feels like a job...I love RTS games and own lots and lots of them the furthest I go into reality RTS is Men of War and Total War....but when it comes to Wargame its not that fun for me and as I said I feel very rewarded with a nice 15, 30 min game of WIC Modern Warfare mod (check out this vid on youtube: lets play world in conflict: MW mod 4.0.2 Russia 2013/10/10) its immersive and doesn't ask of me to become a military vehicle expert or those long games...also love company of heroes franchise its fun not to much into the simulation side...its just fun...as for this game I always check from time to time how the franchise is going but I stopped with European Escalation sadly to much time investment and difficult to play with friends....I even had to end games because drags to long and its confusing at times...you know what I still play a lot Battle for middle earth 2 ROTWK its fun.

Although 1.4k units is a lot (its about 1.6 now with the dlc) 2/3 are variations of units, they will come with different vehicles or they will have older more outdated equipment (at least for infantry). Once you figure out whats decent you tend to ignore half the units and instead rely on the tried and tested units which you know work well, *cough* Malyutka, T72s and Bmps *cough* but the main limiting factor for your armies are what play-style you want to play because if you want to play a support you cant use the heavier tanks and your limited with choppers. But if you wanna play airborne you'll find that support units are limited. its all about balancing what you bring and making sure you have a counter for everything. For example if you are a really tank heavy player and you have a load of infantry but you don't have much AA as a result your opponent will realize and will start using his planes and helicopters to cause havoc on your lines but if your over plane heavy and they have lots of AA you'll struggle to make use out of all your expensive jets without them being shot down. What im saying is this game is all about balance. Lastly you tend to stick with one or two nations that you know well for me it's Poland and USSR. i know them really well but i can translate my knowledge of them and make a not completely horrid US or UK deck because i can compare them to what i know. This is evident when you play multiplayer as most people will always jump on the team they want to play even if it stacks the game into a 4V2.

I would have to say the biggest issue I see with this game is that the naval battles are way too populated. the range of modern naval engagements are upwards of 50 to 100 km, not visual range, and to revert to the main guns that quickly is silly. No navy would ever pack that many ships into such a tight map. to me it takes the realism out of the navy battles all together and reverts to the starcraft/supreme commander unit spamming. other than that, it looks like an awesome and fun game.

Yup, Warbase player base would agree with you that naval combat needs to be revamped. Do keep in mind that Red Dragon is the first iteration of naval combat in the series so it's a decent start.

Interesting that there wasn't a mention of World in Conflict as it is probably the most similar game (definitely much more than the TW series). Especially as the Modern Warfare mod then pushed that game from "arcade" to the same "realistic" direction, with similar flow of the game (long range artillery, special infantry tactics, air strikes, etc.) but with even more emphasis on air power, missiles, anti-air systems, radars,..

Now, I don't think you were trying too hard to sound anti-war game, but I still feel the need to defend the genre. There's a few reasons why Military settings are common in video games and media in general. One thing to keep in mind is that conflict and tragedy are great for drama. War has plenty of that. Second is that military equipment simply looks awesome, like something out of a sci-fi story. In fact, much of the awesome things from sci-fi are basically souped-up versions of military hardware. Next, stuff blowing up is always cool. Don't believe me? Go to a fireworks show. Also, shooting projectiles is also cool. Nerf Guns are a lot of fun to play with. You can think of COD or Battlefield as Nerf Gun simulators (frankly, this is probably the best way to think of them). And which kid didn't enjoy playing 'cops and robbers' as a kid? Rangers and Spetznaz is basically the adult version.

Multiplayer 10v10 is the best tutorial. I don't know how Eugen would make an interactive tutorial that wouldn't be boring as hell.

I've tried playing the prior Wargame European Escalation. The tutorial wasn't much better because whilst it pitted me against fake 'red' tanks, they destroyed my resupply point (in the middle of the map) and continued to rush me with tanks until my megre starting forces ran out of ammo and died (I was at the start just figuring out how the controls worked and didn't know I could call reinforcements or that I should save the base). The series looks really interesting but the barrier to entry is really steep, if only they included a pause button on single player (admittedly I might not have found it) or made more welcoming tutorials (and UI) I might be more willing to start throwing myself into the online maelstroms that it seems to be geared towards.

In Red dragon you can set the speed of the game in single player. You can make it so slow (bullet time) that it is basically paused.

The AI of this game is leagues better then TW...granted it has it's issues but still it can give you a run for your money if it has a proper brigade. EDIT: The campaign is actually better off for it due to the limited nature. We don't need a grand strategy every time, in fact Total War is worse off for it.

Well i do not like playing multiplayer so a solid single player is important for me and a lot of TW players love playing singleplayer as well. I think the TW epicness (size) makes it if not repayable (which it is for me and countless others) at least long enough so you cant finish it in two days or a night. Im on a TW playthrough that has lasted like 2 weeks now. The RPG elements of the game is also what makes it fun, I want to feel like I started off small and finished undisputed. I want to start off as the Shimizu and finish as the Shogun owning half of Japan, or start as Macedon and retrace Alexander the greats footsteps. This game sounds awesome though, And why not start as the Soviet Union and crush NATO.. or Start in Washington and finish in Beijing.. but from what ive seen if hand eye coordination and micro becomes more important than actual strategy it is probably not the best for me.

bjahava It's really not a fast paced game. It's a game more about slow deliberate strategies rather then swift clicks.

***** Watching several clips leads me to somewhat agree with you. It is more of a real time tactics game. Aka the battles will almost always be won with attrition (which is the way many wars are fought today but not all the time, and also the way most Generals would prefer not to fight a war). Again it also lacks a lot of RPG elements however, building Decks does win a few points for me though, and the Unit variety turns me on. But just so you understand my kind of mind-frame i do not like CODs but love Mass Effects. It does try to be as close to a military simulator as can get.. and in the modern era Russia couldn't crush NATO without all out nuclear war.

***** But I was thinking about a more geo-political game.. using proxy wars.. real diplomacy.. war on Terror, splitting up Georgia ect.. with a final resolution (A winnable tactical nuclear war) all of these are strategies. All of which do not exist in this game, as again it relies solely on tactics. Mixing Micro and Macro is what TW does so well.. you build a nation and an army then micro manage it on the battlefield. This way both types of players win.. If you are good at Macro and building an Army you will go to the field with a better army, but if you are only good at Micro and tactics you will take an inferior army and do more (Scipio having all these resources and manpower vs Hannibal with limited resources but made it count when he needed). If you are a superior manager you still stand a chance against a superior commander.. does that make sense. I'm not saying TW is a better game, I just think it fits that strategy perspective and RPG elements better for me. This game is awesome though, and I envy the guys who are capable of making it work.

***** I should also add that while Scipio the older was a good manager but piss poor tactictian.. his son was better at both he built a rockstar army and out Hanniballed Hannibal.. which is why we are speaking a language heavily influenced by Latin today. This is what would make a game fun for me, the right people will win but if you are strong in one field you will still be able to compete.

"if infantry ever starts shooting at each other with their rifles, then you are probably doing something very very wrong" actually, thats how 70% of games run. infantry is the quintessential unit of this game, and often, close urban combat means instantaneous death for armoured unit, so VERY often it turns into close urban battle, infantry vs infantry.
@Soupjamjoel

You shouldn't be having problems identifying units, each type is given a symbol so at a glance you can see what it is and further you can select the unit to see it's particular loadout. That's kind of a moot point.
