I wouldn't say it's about depression as much as it's an album about adolescence, touching on themes of the excitement of young love and infatuation, the inevitable heartbreak and loneliness attached to it, and the longing to find one's place of belonging in this world.

Plus the fact that he was going head to head with the Beatles and (almost) winning. They put out Revolver, he put out Pet Sounds. They put out Sgt Pepper, he puts out Good Vibrations. Then he tries to make album of songs as good as 'Good Vibrations', and he has a drug induced mental breakdown. John and Paul then take the severed head of The Beach Boys and put it over the mantlepiece. Next to Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Rolling Stones, The Byrds, and all the other bands that had dared to compete with them.
@dimitryyakovich9488

@@marktaylor6491 You could say he had the last laugh though. Even if Brian couldn’t finish the album he still made great music with the band long after the Beatles broke up and well into the 70s. if Medicine had leaned more into the “pure noise” aspect of their music instead of jumping around to experiment with electronica and R&B, and breaking up and reforming multiple times, i like to think they probably could have come close to replicating Loveless. other bands like All Natural Lemon & Lime Flavors and Fleeting Joys also approach the pure hallucinatory qualities of MBV but were never quite punishing enough to reach Shields’ level. i’d have to say i agree though. it’s sad no one else has unlocked the mystery but speaks so much to the quality of the work, even the band themselves couldn’t quite bottle the same lightning a second time.

The Sound off Soundtracks for the Blind is the single most moving piece of music I’ve ever heard in my entire life. It brought me to tears the first time I listened to it. Next time you listen to Soundtracks I think you should keep in mine what the concept is behind the album, it makes it a little bit easier to get through. Michael Gira wanted to make an album similar to Brian Eno’s Film Music, which is essentially an album for a movie that doesn’t exist. When you listen to Soundtracks you’re supposed to create the imagery yourself. When I listen to it I usually try to imagine myself traveling through some sort of wormhole with the dark ambient tracks being the foggy wormhole and the more cohesive songs being clear vivid set pieces or stories that the wormhole takes me to. Then you get sucked right back up into the darkness. It’s truly an album that exudes the most extreme positive and negative feelings. I also recommend you check out Swans Are Dead. It’s a live album that accompanies Soundtracks. The live version of Blood Promise is just as beautifully transcendent as The Sound and Helpless Child.

I don't think Trout Mask Replica was meant to sound "exactly" the way it does. A very common thing that's brought up is that there are like 3 or four different riffs going on at the beginning of Frownland which are all in different time signatures, and these were just diddies that Beefheart shat out and told John French to fit together exactly the way he did it, in what I can only describe as a mixture of ignorance and stubbornness. He was explicitly physically abusive towards the band during the recording of this album in order to assert his dominance. Truthfully I don't understand why they even put up with him and stayed with the band, and the fact that the album was ever even finished at all is a miracle in itself, let alone the fact that the band continued for decades. It's been a while since I've actually listened to the album because its two fucking hours and it's a demanding and draining album to listen all the way through, but it's an album that requires you to appreciate the absurd, as it is absurdist in nature, but I don't know if we'll ever truly know whether or not Beefheart intended for it to be absurdist or if he genuinely wanted to release a psychedelic blues record. It's truly an enigma that few have come close to replicating.

In the court of the crimson King is a great album to start with King Crimson. You should definately check out their 70s and 80s albums. Also since you mentioned the album sounding like a soundtrack for a movie, the movie children of men uses the title track for a great scene.

@@KyleReidMu King Crimson changed their sound every decade, so there's a lot of variations. As for the movie, I dont want to spoil anything, but the main story is that in the near future women suddenly cant get children anymore because of some sort of disease. It's worth to watch for the uninterrupted long shots alone, also there is a pink floyd reference in there.

Maximillian Colby's full discography (it's all compiled as part of an anthology and is in circulation as of this comment's typing since it's so short) is a good place to start when it comes to Slint-like bands Others i'd recommend would really have to run the gamut of: Hurl (A Place Called Today) Engine Kid (Angel Wings) Boys Life (Departures & Landfalls) Kerosene 454 -- for this i recommend their subsequent albums and especially their last two Hoover (Lurid Traversal of Route 7) Hope i've done you a service with a few of these!

@@KyleReidMu currently 30 minutes into the album and I’m enjoying it. In terms of difficulty to listen and understand, it’s a very easy album to listen to and enjoy. I’ve never had the difficulty of being unable of getting into a great album. Definitely one of the best albums I’ve heard. I don’t listen to Post Rock at all really, I can probably count the amount of post rock albums I’ve listened to on my hand (including this album) never had the will to listen to post rock b/c the name of the genre sounds weird (what could post rock possibly mean?) But I’ll definitely check out more post rock albums b/c of you. Thanks.

I'm glad you're enjoying the album Sidney! Definitely check out Black Country, New Road if you haven't. They're a newer post rock band from the UK that takes a lot of influence from Slint (at least on their first album, I think the second album stirs away from that but it's still REALLY good)
