Out of three Godzilla shows that we have now, I think this really is the best one. HB Godzilla can be fun, but its also simple and basic. And the HEAT team are characterized far better than the other two shows human casts.

@@Symbiotian I don't think there was a 'core audience' that liked SP because of the science overindulgence. Remember much of the creators behind SP were behind the idiocy that was the anime godzilla trilogy. They have an established history of doing what they want as opposed to what viewers might actually want. The word salad and technobabble is there to stroke their egos and brag about their IQs. If there is positive reception to SP its because there are actual Kaiju fights now and the animation/designs are good. From the reviews of SP I have seen so far, they are at best lukewarm and say what's been depicted so far is forgettable. I personally agree, I can't recall any episode or even fight scene I want to go back to.

What I always found fascinating about this cartoon is how no-one questions Godzilla's heat ray. We never saw it in the movie, but when Jr. does it in the first episode against the air strike, nobody questions it at all. You would think Randy or Craven would yell "Wait, he can breathe fire now?!" But instead everyone acts like he could always do that. As you said that there was some division between the film producers and the animation studio, I'm starting to wonder if the show runners just assumed Godzilla would have an atomic breathe weapon of some sort and wrote it into the scripts.

I loved this show, and still do. Honestly, I think the Chameleon was an example of wasted potential; if there was a transmitter on the creature - the same kind Winters used on Godzilla, in fact - does that mean the Chameleon was abducted instead of created? What if Philippe had aimed the rocket at the transmitter and destroyed it? Chameleon may have been freed if it was abducted, and simply wander away. If it was created, it may have stood still, both monsters confused; after a few seconds, they roar at eachother, and Chameleon becomes a sort of second Godzilla [third in continuity, second in role]. While Godzilla is out fighting other monsters, Chameleon may be fighting humans or exploring the world; hell, maybe it ends up being an addition to Monster Island - not as an uwilling resident, but as a security measure since it's able to transform into something to match or counter each monster should they escape

My two favorite characters from the show had to be Kraven and Major Hicks. Mendel Kraven was a sleeper badass behind his hypochondriac tendencies and had a spine that showed when shit hit the fan. Major Hicks may be the only reasonable military figure in the TriStar Godzillaverse, made even better by him actually holding rank and being able to actually influence what the military does. He does have his bull headed moments of disagreement with Nick and crew, but like I said it was refreshing to have a military guy in any monster movie who recognizes bigger threats and how Zilla Jr. can be an asset.

The whole Godzilla series actually aired in Australia on The Big Cheez (known as Cheez TV on weekdays), along with the Jumanji animated series. I like to think that I was responsible for its resurgence in popularity. Back then I used to wake up, sometimes as early as 3am to tape Jumanji and Godzilla. Some years later in 2004, I was browsing the old TV Tome website and I noticed an American user asking if anybody had copies of the show. I left a reply saying I had the whole series and they guy offered to send me money to pay for the cost of VHS tapes and postage. The plan was I'd send VHS copies to his friend in the UK who would make region free DVD copies for us both. I received my copies, he received his. I didn't think much more about it. But a couple years later KZitem came along and my recordings had gone viral. People were posting music videos and even entire episodes, and I could tell they were my recordings from the VHS artifacts and Network Ten logos. When I contacted my American acquaintance and asked about this, I was told his UK friend had also sent out copies to other friends. Apparently one of them made Bit Torrents of them. So if you saw this show on KZitem and it exhibited a Network Ten logo, you're welcome!

Loved this review! So glad people loved the show as much as I did. I truly wish we could’ve seen much more. I’ve seen some of the potential monsters afterward that would’ve been amazing to see. Just aslo wanted to say, Winters wants to get rich but he also hates Nick. He doesn’t want Nick to do better than him and only went after what is arguably Nick’s most successful and valuable thing he “owns” which is Godzilla. He didn’t need to go after Nick, since before getting into Godzilla mayhem, Nick dealt with mud and worms all day. Winter saw him as a lowly rival but soon sky rocketed to a true contender against his throne of superiority. So really, he’s an asshole who needs to be above everyone else even if it means that he has to kill or kidnap you 100,000 ton lizard.

DeathLoch could even a homage to Toho and Hammer pictures unmade Kaiju/British horror movie Nessie. Episodes Cat and Mouse is nice nods to 1976 movie Food of the Gods and Hive a nice reference to THEM replacing the ants with bees and having it be a B-Movie monster movie feel, the creators of the show were huge fans of Godzilla as well as tons of old monster movies and it really shows how much tiny little homages they put in each episode. *Edit* Another thing I left out was Cyber-Godzilla was meant to be the shows Mecha-Godzilla. I loved this series WAY more than the 1998 live-action film it was based on. It felt epic, and much closer to what the original Godzilla movies were like, they tried to include some actual science every so often (Godzilla Jr. imprinting on Nick, for example), and what really cemented my love for it was the use of the Ice Borers. I used to subscribe to "Discover" (a science magazine, if you're not familiar with it), and in the April 1995 issue, they did a number of "April Fool" articles, including the recent discovery of a "new" Antarctic predator species, the hot-headed naked ice borer, which was just a naked mole rat with a "thermal organ" Photoshopped onto its forehead. As for Cameron Winter being a boring, one-dimensional billionaire villain who's only interested in grandstanding and making even more money than he already has with some wild, flashy, insane schemes . . .
