I got the one with the pickup but not only is it a pick up, it has buttons to change the sound of it right on the uke.. Like “chorus” and “reverb”. And I have had a lot of fun playing with the different effects. You dont need an amplifier because that is built right into the uke. Not sure what the official terms are for the sounds...anyway it is lots of fun!

I got the orange one and it is really ORANGE! The only problem I have found with it is that it is so fun to play it is hard to put it down once you pick it up. I agree the case is not the greatest, zipper sticks & catches on material, no shoulder strap, and the light color cases pick up dirt & smudges which do not come off. Anyway, I love mine but would like to try other strings as you mention. Thank you for the nice review & I look forward to your recommendation for other strings to try on it.

I'm glad you mentioned it is an 18 inch scale instrument. Not only does the Enya online presence fail to list the scale length you are ate fist reviewer I've heard bring it up. To me the scale length is very important. In violins it is what determines which size you should be playing due to a persons ability to reach far enough to play effectively. To me you should play a scale size you can reach through a whole octave without moving thumb position but it depends on the tuning you use. I play in fifths like mandolin/violin and some of the stuff I do is too strenuous if the scale is too small or too large even. My main performance Mandolin right now is a little over 19" so this 18" should be a nice small adjustment. I'll attempt to get it in GDEA tuning as well with some trial and error with string sizes.

I have one in black and having watched Baz's video, I make sure my hands are washed before I pick it up to play. Honestly, the fingerprint thing isn't so noticeable, so I wonder if the "formula" has changed. I love the black matte look. Anyway, I wholeheartedly agree about the playability, especially with barre chords. This is my second Enya (my first one being the X1 in concert size), and they are both so easy to play. For me, being able play a ukulele with low action is key to learning barre chords and not giving up. If I hadn't purchased my first Enya, I might still be "Four Chord Cherry." The one problem I have with playing the Nova U, however, is with fingerfingerpicking. It may just be me and my inexperience (I'll still classify myself as "beginner" in this area), but without a sound hole, I believe I have less room to fit my fingertips. Having just said that, I have measured both Enya instruments over the soundhole (or soundhole design) and have discovered that the strings are indeed lower on the Nova U. Additionally, I would have liked it if Enya had placed side markings on the fretboard, but I solved that by making marks of my own. Lastly, I have the same opinions of the case. The zipper is quite fussy, especially at the curve where the "neck" and the "body" meet, and yes, if this is designed to be a travel uke, then why does the case not have at least one strap? Thanks for your thorough review. I can hardly wait to watch your comparison of all your travel ukuleles.

Thank you so much for doing this video! I have had it in my "watch later" for awhile now, as I have been pondering this uke for my waterproof uke...I first heard of this one via BernadetteTeachesMusic, and at first I did not love the look (but I had literally just gotten my first uke, very traditional looking, and I can be a bit of a traditionalist), but after hearing all of the good things, and reading up on it everywhere that I can, and comparing with info about other waterproof or resistant brands (as well as playing them), it sounds like this one is the best for low action (and a ton of other reasons)---and lo and behold, the look has grown on me! (Now that I have spent plenty of daily quality time with my first "baby", I feel ready to broaden my horizons, and I don't mind looking like a rocker.. ;-) Speaking of broadening, I just ordered a Flight TUS-40 in "Granada" to try out, through my local music store, and they are being super generous letting me try it out there to see if I like it without obligating me to buy it. I know that they could sell it easily(!)---but it will be my first travel/"not as protective over it" uke, and I ordered it based on your review, Bernadette's, and GotaUkulele's reviews of the Flight ukes---otherwise I might never have given it another thought! If I like it, it will get to be played in a St. Paddy's day parade next Saturday!) ANYWAY...I would LOVE LOVE LOVE to see a direct sound comparison video between the Waterman and the Enya Nova, whenever you do another comparison video like you mentioned. Those comparison videos you do are GOLDEN. (again, loved the Flight and the Flea based on your reviews for potential travel ukes!). I am more a rich sound versus bright sound kind of girl...and so far, the Enya Nova doesn't seem jarringly bright, either (unlike some of the other water-resistant brands)! In fact, I honestly cannot find anything I am hesitant about based on the reviews I have seen...now I just need to decide if I am getting it in blue, orange (usually my fave color for a lot of things, but not sure for this), or the White with Cherry Blossoms they now have on Amazon (Enya Nova Flower)...which FYI, in the description of that one today, it does mention radius fretboard! That one costs a little more, probably for the pattern. The case is boring black, but looks the same in every other way. There is a special signature on the back of that one, but nothing mentioned in description, so I have submitted a question to them...) If I have already missed your comparison video with this one, please let me know! Ps---have you changed the strings on it yet, and what strings did you use/are you thinking of?

Make sure the C nut slot is wide enough for the string. Sometimes they need widening so the string does not get hung up and glides through when being tuned especially because C is the thickest string.

I was going to suggest this too. The problem she described is similar on guitars with the G string. It sticks in the nut and then comes up to tune while tuning. Run a pencil in the string slot in the nut and this may help.

Nice review Jodi! This uke seems to be everywhere ATM. I've heard a lot of good things about it and am desirous of the orange one. I'm a little concerned about the embedded nut, which I can't take off to lower the action (I'm a real low rider LOL). Looks like that's not necessary on this model. Shame about the lack of side fret markers. That's a real oversight on such a mass market uke that will be picked up by so many beginners. I would like to add a criticism of the black on black frets. It makes them hard to see. Ms B has been doing lessons with this ukulele and it's hard to see which fret she's on.

Jodi - Great review, as usual. Love your playing. Sticky tuner? Spray a little WD40 into a thimble. Take a toothpick and put less than a drop on all the screws and gears. Rotate the tuners back and forth a few times. Should help. WD40 will not harm plastic or strings. No back straps made me not a fan of the case. This uke will not fit into my other concert gig bags, so it is enjoying lots of room in a tenor gig bag with double straps. And I think it is fair to compare this uke with any uke regardless of materials. Looking forward to hearing this uke with different strings. Rick

I changed my strings to Aquila Red low-G, like Feng did in his Enya Nova demo video: (kzitem.info/news/bejne/wJCjs6uFsWiIgn4 ). I think these strings give me a much nicer range than the stock strings. Regarding the radiused fretboard, Enya does the same thing on some of their other ukuleles. I have one of their HPL models with the same sort of fretboard shape and it does help a lot with playability. I don't know what are the downsides, but there must be some reason that other manufacturers are not using them on their low-priced instruments.

Hello. Thanks for this review. I'm considering this and the Kala waterman. I know the waterman has a few issues like slight bowing and staying in tune. Now that you've had the enya for a little while what are your thoughts. I watched your travel uke video (thanks for that btw) how does this one stack up?

I like this one a LOT better than the waterman. The waterman also has high action and a more echoey sound. Also, this one is so much easier to play. All that comes at a higher price, but in my opinion it is worth it.

Adding carbon fiber has no impact on the temperature resistance of different grades of polycarbonate. It does have a positive affect on stiffiness and strength which in turn have a positive affect on tone.

@@DanielFlores-ku8os I wonder about the temperature resistance of this uke. I bought it thinking it could live in my car with my Outdoor ukulele, but I'm hesitant to try it after receiving the Enya and feeling the difference between it and my Outdoor. The plastics feel different. I also worry about how the paint will react to temperature fluctuations. Is the Enya made of a lower grade of polycarbonate than the Outdoor? Thanks!

@@jenniferlehner1849 I would not expect it to handle heat and abuse like an Outdoor Ukulele. At the same time car interiors do not get anything near 250 degrees Fahrenheit that Outdoor Ukuleles can handle. Where you live will greatly affect the heat of your car interior. To Enya's credit they make no claim about it being super tough. Is it painted or is that the color of the plastic? I don't think the color will be a real problem; particularly if you keep it in it's case. The case will also help with heat in the car. Try contacting Enya and ask if damage from heat in a car is covered in the 1 year warranty.

@@DanielFlores-ku8os That's true - the Enya website doesn't specify anything about the conditions that their uke will survive. I just assumed since it is made of polycarbonate. My fault. I live in Oklahoma, and it is usually in the upper 90's or low 100's (Fahrenheit) in the summer and around 30-40's in the winter, so I'm asking a lot of a car uke. I imagine it will last at least a year, but I'll still try contacting Enya. The body of the uke is painted. I'm more concerned about the paint cracking or crazing, not fading. All of other plastic ukes I have owned have used colored plastic, not painted plastic, so I'm not sure how it will hold up. I do keep my other car ukes in gig bags, so will do the same with this one. It will be interesting to see how this holds up in comparison to the Waterman, BugsGear, and Outdoor. Thanks for the response! :)

How does this compare to the outdoor soprano? I'm debating which to buy between these two
@girlmeetsuke2980

They differ quite a bit in size since this one is slightly bigger than a concert. Also, I think the outdoor soprano is slightly louder although neither is very loud. I will work on a sound comparison of these two soon.

Great so far and I don’t anticipate any problems with it. My favorite part is how easy it is to play!

Jodie I have to retract the poo poo statement . I WAS going by the comment from your first impressions of new enya vid by Fun Ukulele Projects I wrongly assumed a troll from Outdoor Ukulele. I apologize..

Yes. I don’t think you’d have any dropping fitting this with a low G. If so, it’s nothing a little sanding on the nut slot couldn’t fix.

I think it would sound just fine. But the cutaway would be on the wrong side. Not a big deal if you don’t plan on playing far up the neck. 😉
