Episode 138: Revisiting WWF Wrestlemania 2000 WWF WrestleMania 2000 is a professional wrestling video game originally released in 1999 on the Nintendo 64 (N64) console.

Boring story but I had WCW vs NWO World Tour as a kid and only rented but never owned Revenge. Absolutely superb games. One time my friend brought over his copy of Wrestlemania 2000 and for whatever reason maybe we had other things to do or other games to play but we didn't boot it up. In my adolescent head I vividly remember thinking it would basically be WWF Attitude 2 and wouldn't be as fun as the WCW games so I wasn't eager to play it despite WWF being the more exciting show to watch. Completely skipped over No Mercy thinking it would be Attitude 3 and was kinda growing out of wrestling for a couple of years. 15 years later I'd be on KZitem watching wrestling trivia videos and my mind was blown when I discovered there were WWF AKI games. Not only that but I had one in my hands as a kid (Wrestlemania 2000) and I didn't play it. It didn't occur to me WWF AKI games even existed. "REVENGE BUT WWF!? All those wasted years. I envy those who grew up with them. Side note, it's super tragic that my boy Goldust just happened to be in opposite companies while these games were developed and was featured in none of them.

I got this game at a flea market back in 2013 or 14 where I also got my Nintendo 64 which was $30 what a steal, I also got other games like Super Smash Bros, Super Mario 64, and WCW Mayhem but with WWF Wrestlemania 2000 I never gave it a chance. Until 2019 I decided to play it and I fell in love with the game. I played as a created Goldberg against Triple H in a steel cage match and that lasted almost an hour since I was having a blast playing the game. The controls were incredible, then I saw people talk about WCW/NWO World Tour, Revenge and WWF No Mercy which I found out they were also developed by AKI so I just had to get them. I got both WCW/NWO World Tour, also Revenge on Ebay for $15 again what a steal and then got WWF No Mercy at a retro video game store for about $20 although I wish I got the version that was patched but it's still an amazing game just like all the wrestling games AKI made they never made one bad wrestling game.

Road To Wrestlemania mode was nuts if you pay attention to how long matches sometimes ran, like episodes of Heat were like 5 hours overall. like Droz vs Road Dogg goes 57 minutes and ends in a double countout, Steve Blackman beats Test in 52 minutes by submission, Stone Cold vs Undertaker vs The Rock goes 1 hour time limit draw....its crazy. I never took note of that before and then recently did a play through of the mode again and noticed ALOT of matches going at least 50 minutes.

I would have loved to see what this game would look like if it were ported onto the PlayStation One. Hell, someone made a sick looking PS1 fan port of Bloodborne and released that a few weeks ago. Add a few exclusive modes like Hell in a Cell, the wrestlers that were cut out from the game, CD quality entrance themes, and full FMV titantrons into it and you pretty much got it going on.

I love the fact that there was never a wait for load time on a cartridge. It’s pretty annoying to wait for loading all the time. N64 was and is still an awesome console. Loved it. Still love it. I feel like overall game quality was better back then. In my opinion N64 probably had the lowest percentage of lousy games of all the consoles.
@KopperNeoman

ROM cartridges usually loaded fast because most of the assets could be accessed directly from the cartridge, unlike more modern mass storage devices. They did still load though: Banjo Tooie N64's infamous frame rate is due to it constantly loading.

This game & NO MERCY I think hit the perfect sweet spot for how to successfully have a CAW system that's both pretty expansive but also not overwhelming. Yeah, there aren't a 1,001 options for how your superstar climbs into the ring or individually paint each fingernail a custom color, but IMO the absurd amount of customization becomes a slog when it takes an entire day to create your guy before even starting a career mode. That ridiculous amount of customization is also an excuse by publishers to make the high-end suplexes/superkicks/top rope moves/taunts/etc pay to play with microtransactions or loot boxes, it just sucks compared to the simplicity of WRESTLEMANIA 2K or NO MERCY.

Loved the inclusion of Steiner math - the numbers don't lie! For real though, this is a great review. I especially liked learning about the background of the development and how WWE came to be developed by THQ. Hard to believe WCW would've moved away from a literal award winning formula.

One of my favourite aspects of the Road to WrestleMania mode was that not only could you use it with a CAW, when you completed it you were given the option of continuing for another year as a different character. Choose a new CAW and your original one stays on the roster (replacing one of the actual WWE wrestlers). Continue doing this and you can (eventually) have a roster packed with your own CAW characters.

Great video on WrestleMania 2000. WCW NWO World Tour was the first game i got for N64 for Christmas as a kid. I loved it and enjoyed how much better each wrestling game from Aki got. I loved the deep customization and Road to Wrestlemania mode. It also made me appreciate how much more interesting the WWF attitude era wrestlers were than what i was seeing on wcw.

this game was a blast, I remember playing it as a freshman in college. My friends and I had a running gag, because we all made versions of ourselves and one of our friends used to go out of his way to claim he had a big dong so every once in a while I'd change his finisher to the small package lol

Fantastic recap of one of my all-time sentimental favorites. I was about 10 when this one dropped and have so many fond memories of playing for hours on end at my friend's house. This game actually got me into wrestling which is a love I still have to this day. Keep up the great work man, your videos are such top quality.

My childhood friends and I used to play this game all the time, even after No Mercy came out. Our belt info is still saved and though we dont see each other as much since we moved around, we always bust this game out when we meet up and defends our belts.

Dude.. I legitimately still play this game nightly on a handheld device... I play this, wcw revenge and vpw2 as if it's a 1998 universe. I'm pushing 40 and still living the dream that it's 1998! 😳

You had way more patience than l did as a kid lol No way could l have spent the time creating a custom moveset for my custom characters in WM 2000 or NO Mercy. I would just clone superstars and add more athletic moves to their set. For example, l cloned Lita and made "Lolita Hardy", Matt and Jeff's little sister. lol l cloned Kane and made "Scarface" Kanes 7'7 tall half brother 🤣 And lastly l cloned Kurt Angle to make Captain America. He was basically just Kurt in the red, white and blue AKI Man suit lmao

It’s funny, I don’t have the patience these days, I always use templates but back in the day as a kid I wanted to customize every single last aspect of my created wrestler.

I remember when I bought this game! I would play it until 6 a.m. almost every day. Recreating my favorite wrestlers that weren't included in the roster and even coming up with my own original wrestlers. I think I still have a replay recorded on one of my old VHS tape of the ending of one of my matches somewhere :p This game and the follow up WWF No Mercy are without a shadow of a doubt the greatest wrestling games ever created. Those years were amazing for wrestling fans! What a great time to be alive :)

9:54 if any console shouldve been capable of titantron videos it was the PS1, that's lazy development if you ask me. some of Attitudes entrances were okay but ones that should've been great, weren't. Austin's was awful. Walked like he had a big ol dump in his tights, no vest entrance attire, and his hands were fully open when he hit the turnbuckles.

Yeah, attitude had some serious issues that were acceptable in Warzone but should have been addressed in the sequel.

Hey Nik, what an in depth review including the game release history. Are those sealed boxes of WCW and WWF n64 games? That looks in pristine condition, how cool! Despite having kinda subpar graphics, its amazing how well animated the wrestlers are, from diferent entrance to all moves and finishers. Have you seen the new WWE 2022 videos? They are revamping the gameplay, lets see how does it turn out.
