I really appreciate all the efforts taken to reawaken our language and culture. For much of my life, I never fit in anywhere (raised by white parents). However, I was able to reconnect with my biological father's family as an adult. Between that and a DNA test, a lot of questions have been answered. Having taught myself Spanish, I am confident I could learn our ancestral language. I look forward to the day it is completely unearthed so we may all do just that. Thank you for your fine work in making that happen.

Mimi Milan I relate to your experience. I learned Spanish through all my years of schooling and finally in college I learned to speak it. My parents were way too busy working very hard so they didn’t have time to teach it to me. I also feel as I’ve been told by speakers of different languages that I’ve an affinity for language that I can learn to speak Taíno. Both my parents are from Central America and my moms’ family became citizens of Puerto Rico and lived there for a decade before moving here to the States. I’d be honored to learn the language. I feel I need it for a true connection with my indigenous heritage as I see you do too. We all do, right?!

Gracias

How would someone go about officially becoming part of the tribe? Is there some standard of knowledge or determination to preserve and revive culture that would decide whether a descendant could become part of the tribe? I’m mixed (aren’t we all?)- my dad’s family is from Puerto Rico; I’ve also grown up hearing I’m part Taino from my family, and it’s been confirmed (as well as it can be) for me through dna testing. I don’t know Spanish yet though, and currently I’m in Florida with no foreseeable way to visit PR any time soon. Is there a way I can become involved long-distance, or some other resources you would recommend for others like me to join you in learning more about our ancestral language and heritage? Thank you for making this video, and for being involved in reviving our language and culture, and in petitioning for those records to be made public.

Marquette University put out information that states the San German de Auxerre Church in San German, Puerto Rico was the last community to record Taino Indians as some of their parishioners in the late 1700's. The secretary of the Church admits that they do have sacraments from the 1700's but they won't release sacraments before 1854. Google search "Guide to Catholic-Related Records in the East about Native Americans E-58".

San German de Auxerre Church in Puerto Rico holds all the records according to Richard... those documents should be copied and shown to all.... The Tiano Indians also might still be in Cuba given it's land mass, even after all these years. I'd suggest looking at Cuba for some of the language, it's close to Puerto Rico and might hold a lot more information on the culture and language...

As far as you want it you can just name your self w.e you want but some people like most natives. Go and get it ceremoniously done by elders of there. Tribes depends where ur from in sure u can find someone or just call your self w.e u want untill your old enough and can even buy a license they make joining the tribal cancels
