These videos add a new aspect to ‘singlehanding’ and a delightful counterpoint to Team Tally Ho! Some of your hand-tools look as though they could have been used in the original build - so along with your repurposing of propane tanks and floor beams etc we are enjoying a master class of antipodean “waste not, want not” My best You Tube find for many a year …

Another great video, there’s not many good shipwrights left with those skills and perception. Like My father was one Mr Allan Smith did his trade in cockatoo island and spent years around cottage point and bobbin head building boats and fixing them! Our family yacht 90 year old Maud built by Halvoson brothers and further restored by Dad was a fine example of the last of the real shipwrights from your area. Regards.

There is something comfortable about working on a boat project in a secure boat shed. You seem to have a large tool chest somewhere. You are doing a very good job refitting Jabiru!

Thank you for the comment. Yes, my ordinary work life supplies me with a huge toy shed for the weekends.

Loved the shots of her lines from the inside, she is such a shapely boat her builders had a good eye for form. They put me in mind of the Norfolk broad sailing cruisers but rather better executed. Now there's a thought!!!?

This brings back so many memories. I used to work in a boatyard on the South Coast and watched an older shipwright doing just what you are doing. Very interesting journey. 👌

I enjoy the budget aspects you are applying to this rebuild. You see a lot of channels where the budget is essentially unlimited... but that is not the real world for many. You show the decision making process and the balance needed to find a "mostest for the leastest" end result.

I'm enjoying this series, different than other boat projects I've seen, possibly as this is the first wooden boat, thanks for taking the time to record them

Idea #3: A stainiess steel drip tray under the motor, between the new engine bearers. Removable is great, if possible, but rarely is 😢.

Molded glass and epoxy tray - not removeable but plenty of paint underneath. Will show in future episode.

When I first saw your project my thoughts were "why are you wasting time on such a rotten boat?", but now as I see things coming together and most of those bilge timbers are still usable, I'm beginning to see where you are getting the appeal to restore her back to former glory. I watch with interest from the winterless Far North of NZ. Cheers

I am not sure if the relocation of the fuel and water tanks will compensate fully the changed weight distribution due to the fact that the engine is now mounted more to the stern. It could be that additional ballast is needed to properly trim the boat.

I've removed a 57 litre fuel tank from under the rear deck and doing the sums, I don't have to move the water and fuel too far forward to compensate for the engine position. Using those old lpg tanks gives me 40 kg just in tank weight before I add the fuel and water. However, as you say, if needed there is always ballast.

Lol. After boat renos ya NEVER KNOW where the new waterline will be ... especially if rebuilding a whole cabin, adding new a different motor, new accessories, etc, etc, etc. I leave the fresh water tanks till *after floating*. Nowadays, the easiest cheapest trim is to use bladder tanks. You can buy and install as many kilograms of water balast as you need port and/or starboard, forward and/or aft to adjust trim for when empty or full (0 - X00 kgs!).
