From not having the money to buy milk for her baby to the Padma Shri award in 2023, Pritkana Goswami has travelled a journey few can endure. While reviving the long-lost Nakshi Kantha needlework, she has also created livelihood opportunities for women.
Kantha is one of the oldest forms of embroideries and is mostly practiced in eastern India and the neighbouring Bangladesh. Regardless of their caste and religion, rural women have been using this embroidery for centuries to create utility and decorative items. The earliest and most basic kantha stitch is a simple, straight, running stitch.
Pritikana Goswami has been practicing Kantha for almost 33 years. Living in the Sonarpur village on the outskirts of Kolkata, she has been instrumental in galvanizing the ancient art. Her works are on display at The Victoria Albert Museum in London, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Washington DC Textile Museum, and the Honolulu Museum of Art.
