Excellent! I remember as a child back in the late 1970's, (completely obsessed with the Phantom), being on a family walking holiday in the Malvern hills here in the UK and having two USAF F4's come piling through a valley about fifty feet below where I was standing and about 100 feet away from me. I can still clearly visualise looking down into the cockpits as they came round from my left to right and seeing the back seater in the second aircraft looking right up at me, waving. He wore a bright orange helmet and dark oxygen mask. Apart from the three other members of my family, there was no one else on the hill side that morning. He was waving at me. It made my year!!

In the 80's I had the misfortune of living directly under the flight path of El Toro Marine Base in Irvine, Ca. Everyday and often at night. These guys would be flying overhead. Sometimes, they were so low that you could wave at the pilots and they would give you a thumbs up! 😎 God bless the USMC and all those they protect. Hoo Ra!

I want to share my own story... When I was younger (early 80's) I was working on the farm in Northern Indiana. They used to fly F4's out of Grissom which wasn't much more than 75 miles away. I was sitting at the end of a barn in the shade eating my lunch, leaning up against the barn doors... nice and quiet, relaxing. No warning... 2 F4's came from behind me over the roof of the barn at somewhere around 1000ft.. I'm pretty sure they were even lower than that. At any rate, I never even heard them coming. when they broke the roof of that barn I nearly shat myself. I could see afterburners running and they were out of sight in no time flat. Those guys were hauling mail... I know supersonic flight is prohibited in most places, but I'm not so sure of those guys were sub. I never heard anything but birds chirping until it was too late. I've never been that close to one running... let alone one at operational speed. Next to the B-58, I think that's the loudest aircraft I've ever heard.

+Zee Kusa I was at Amberley Australia RAAF airbase when they were flying the F4Es - I was sitting in a steel building about 100m from the runway - an F4E doing a "low level high speed pass for a VIP in the tower" was supposed to go by at Mach .9 - he "slipped through" the barrier and it was the loudest noise I have EVER heard - because I didn't hear him coming I thought one had crashed right alongside the building. Thousands of dollars damage (mainly glass smashing) all around the base and the nearby town (Ipswich). MAGIC aircraft, still one of my favourites after all these years - and yes mate, I am bit deaf.....got a million stories to tell about those big buggers. And don't forget those pilots were flying CANBERRAs before they got the Phantoms - like getting out of a Mini and climbing into a Ferrari...

I too grew up in the same area, same time frame and clearly remember the sound barrier being broken when I was young. I swore the front wall of the house moved in and out as it happened and then all the neighbors piled outside. I was just thinking of that while watching this video, what a coincidence to see your post. Google Maps shows I was about 67 miles from Grissom in the DeMotte/Roselawn area.

Two thoughts: 1) I don't care about all of its shortcomings and drawbacks, aesthetically the thing I'd near FLAWLESS! GORGEOUS PLANE & STILL VERY FAST EVEN BY TODAY'S STANDARDS 2) When you see a jet approaching and it's dead silent, and the cost and closer it gets it remains dead silent, you are in for a BOOM one that thing passes! Long Live the F4 Phantom II (at least in some air force in some country somewhere!)

***** yeah, I've heard that too. A professor I worked with while getting my Master's Degree flew one in Vietnam. He did not say too many nice things about it. "Big & Sluggish but when you knew it was time to scram, you could rest assured the MIGs wouldn't catch you" ~ that was his take. I forget what he flew prior to the Phantom II, but he said he led it a LOT better! You may know what the standard service plane was prior to the F-4, but I forget what he said it was. Great insight by the way. Thanks. Merry Christmas to you and Yours.

The F4 Phantom is one of my all time favorite jets, got lucky a few years ago. They were still flying out of Holloman AFB. QF4 comes and does a few touch and go's. They see us watching from the sidelines, and he goes around this time keeps it low and punches the throttle and goes vertical and does a barrel roll for us! Awesome times...

I'm a recently retired A.E. with America's largest defense contractor. My Dad was an Engineer at Cape Canaveral from '56 thru '76 and I grew up in Cocoa Beach, just north of Patrick AFB (now SFB) and they had a fighter squadron there at that time. As young teen boys we used to ride our bikes down A1A and sit at the end of the runway to watch the Mighty F4 Phantom II's take off with full military power right over our heads. They were big SOB's and man did that J79 smoke but they held 52 world speed, altitude, time to altitude and timed closed course records.

Absolutely WONDERFUL video!!! I was in the 117th Medical Squadron which was later changed to 117th Medical Group. When I first arrived at the base in 1984-85 We had RF4-C Phantom Reconnaissance aircraft like in your video. The F-4 Phantom no matter what the air frame is one of my ALL time favorite aircraft. Our base was the 117th Tactical Reconnaissance Wing(TRW) with the 106th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron(TRS) assigned. The base is on the opposite side of the B'ham, AL Airport. After our RF-4C aircraft were retired in 1996 our base converted to the KC-135R tanker. It is now the 117th Air Refueling Wing(ARW). A great tanker to be sure, but it just doesn't have the mystic of the RF-4C aircraft to me that we used to have. I grew up in Pleasant Grove, AL which is only about 13 miles from the B'ham airport. We are in the final approach of the airport. I remember growing up watching the RF-4C's turning in on final approach to the airport, dropping the landing gear and flaps in preparation for landing. Always a cool sight to see. Thank you so much for posting the video. B'ham apparently flew the same model F-4 Phantom as the Reno, NV ANG did.

Here's an anecdotal story for you. After being stationed at an AFB for 2.5 years with F-4 Phantoms you never forget their sound. I was in England going down the A43 with an English friend. I heard a plane overtaking us from behind. I told my friend here comes an F-4 Phantom. He wanted to argue with me on it. He said: "No it's not, it's a bloody F-111." The plane that was assigned to RAF Upper Heyford which was the base I was stationed at, at the time. I told him:"No it's not, it's an F-4 Phantom." Well my friend continued to argue with me about the sound of the aircraft until it passed over us going in basically the same direction we were. After the F-4 Phantom passed over us, he asked me:"How did you know it was an F-4 Phantom.?" I told him after being assigned to a base for 2.5 years with the Phantom, you never forget their sound. No other aircraft had what I call the "moaning" sound of an F-4 Phantom in low level flight. Anecdotal but true story to be sure.

I remember one time when I was a kid. I was outside watching them do their thing. And they had disappeared for a few short minutes. Then all of a sudden here they came right over our yard barely over the trees. One turned up on its side and i could see the pilot inside. Ill never forget how loud that was or how awesome those planes were.

As long as the engines were running they'd fly. With slats and flaps down, the ducted airflow over the wing would maintain lift. However, if the engines weren't running, it had a glide angle of a brick.

These pilot got into a bit of trouble after the fact but all turned out OK in the end. They are flying over Pyramid Lake about 35 miles north of Reno their base at the time. Now we have C-130s. Sure miss the Phantoms flying around town for years. One day we were flying in a 737 to San Fran. commercial and in our climb out the plane banked literally 80 degress. I looked across the isle to the other side of the plane and saw nothing but desert and out my window nothing but sky. When we return to level flight and after the screaming from many of the passengers I saw one of these, our Phantoms whiz buy just a few yard from us. The pilot didn't say a word until we approached SFO when he told the passengers he had to maneuver like that to avoid a collision with the Air Guard jet. It was great!!

As a college student I had rented a house on C st. in Sparks and the Phantoms at night would take off on 34 and fly so low across the river over the Shy Clown casino and over my house shaking the windows and roaring so wonderfully. My friends and I would be drinking beer and playing poker but we would stop to watch and hear the show. As a sailplane instructor I got to fly many of those pilots and hear there stories. That's where I hear they got in a bit of trouble, perhaps I shouldn't comment but hell that was years ago. I remember the one that went down in Spanish Springs, the crew bailed out OK. Speaking of crew, I applied for one of the, I think seven positions they had for navigators. I had 2 years of college and didn't think I could pass the ridged tests, but one bay one I did and I passed the physical and was sent off to go to California for the eye tests. As it turned out I was one of the seven selected and had to make the decision to swear in or not. I never thought I could pass the tests and especially the physical so when it came time to go or no go I talked it over with my family and I wanted to finish college. It was close but I decided to finish school. I wanted to be a pilot not especially a WSO. I didn't go to the final interview before the senior pilots and turned my slot over to a guy named Maldinado. I think he made it in ...George Maldenado I think. I regret that a lot. But I finished college and became a pilot, I already was one since I was 18 but got all my rating and ended up flying a fleet of airplanes for a rich family including a Citation, King-Air, Porter. Caravan and a T-6 they had. Still regret not being able to sit in the pit of a Phantom. Probably a wrong move. I wonder what happened to George? Lucky George. Those wonderful Phantoms Phantoms Phorever! I take it you flew for the Guard?

I watched this video once before, and just remembered it because of the rocks sticking out of the water and the small hill the jets pull up before passing.

Was a Crew Chief on LTF F4's at Davis Monthan AFB AZ. 1965,66 and 67. Went to Viet Nam with them in late 67 all of 68 and a month of 69. Cam Rahn and Denang. I was lucky enough to get to fly backseat a few times stateside and once when we picked up a battle damaged F4 in Denang and brought it back to Cam Rahn Bay.

First time I saw the Blue Angels they were flying the F4s. Still to this day I think the F4's are just a bad ass fighter jet. My only dislike about this video is that I wasn't there to see it live. A 1000 likes from me.

Dst Rich8 I just know from when they go like mach .95 at airshows that you don't here it until its past and you here a rush of sound kinda like a boom but not nearly as intense as a sonic boom.

To me, the best sounds the J79 made was on ground taxi throttle up. It would howl like the biggest baddest werewolf on the planet. It would make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. The F-104 did it even more so.

No Sir, the DC-10 was the TRACTOR...........this was a very well built flying machine for late 50's technology. I worked on BOTH starting with the F-4 way back in 1966 and ending my aviation career in 2005...........you can do the math. When I was Ubon, Thailand in 1967/68 time frame, the Aussies were still flying F-86's. Now that was antiquated!!

Jerry Brownlee Door 22 airlox, and hydraulic leaks continually but that bird was a formidable beast up close!Seay as all fuck and attitude that could make the hairs on your neck stand straight,J79 power plant high-power qualified in the hush houses were a special kind of treat to have the BEST chained down and going into full military was beyond description for mere mortals lol,I'd kill for the opportunity to serve just one more week on the deck with those magical powers

Regarding leaks, some of our pilots in 69 squadron (the Hammers) used to push the Kurnas too hard for her age, flexing the wings & fuselage. As a young airframe mechanic I got sent out to the line to reseal the fuel tanks to stop them dripping. Used to be 2 to 4 hour job to tighten the screws fixing the skin to the wing spars then replace the blue-tack putty sealant around the fuel tank edges. after a few months I could get the wing bone dry without a single drip of fuel. Hard cold work sitting under a wing pumping sealant. But I loved the plane.

Trespire, I know what you mean. On slow days (those were few) I often helped fellows not of my specialty and one of them was a fuel tank repairman. He taught me tricks I learned years later working on commercial aircraft. I had an opportunity to help the mechanics change engines on the F-105 "THUD" also, even though I could have just as easily sat in the shop. Now they were beginning to show their age in the 1968-1969 time frame. Big Old heavy airplane with a big old heavy engine. Stand next to one of these when it went into afterburner and it was like standing next to a bomb going off. LOL

What branch of the service were you in? I was in the Air Force (3years, 11months and 15days) from 1966 to 1970. Went in to BE a Jet Engine Mechanic and they assigned me to F-4 Phantoms........put a "J" prefix on my AFSC (J42350) and this locked me into working Phantoms as long as I was in. Went over to Ubon, Thailand mid summer of 1967..........Col. Olds was still Wing Commander............Col. James was Vice Wing Commander. Those were exciting times and like you, I didn't know how much fun I was having until years later. Would do it again in a heart beat. JB

+Jerry Brownlee Served my 3 years as a structural mechanic / fitter in the IAF in the early 90's, just in time to see the F4 start to be phased out. We used to help each other when things got slow. We used a synthetic 2 part rubber for sealing different areas on the plane, always had some left over when done. The line crew chiefs used to ask us to fill in the joints in the concrete to stop FOD. Also taught a few new mechanics how not to strip out screw heads when opening all those panels. The closest I got to 50's & 60's planes were a static displays of Gloster Meteors & French Vautours.
