This is really cool, thanks for showing the process! One thing I'll note that is in the earlier part of the video, you should the wire bonding to the IC that "mixes the colors" which looks a lot like a ws2811 or similar IC, but in the end, you talk about LEDs that are used for simple christmas lights that use "two wires" which generally do not have controlling ICs, unless I'm missing something.

Hi, the trick is that we can superimpose a digital signal on top of the power signal, this allows us to use just 2 wires, but still communicate digitally

Overall the presentation was really well done and informative. A few points to note, though: 1) The music was louder than the commentary. I had to keep raising and lowering the video at some points of the video, especially at the beginning 2) The camera jitter during panning makes it hard to follow what's going on. It's almost like there are missing frames 3) Maybe a few closer views of some of the work. I know this may not of been possible due to restrictions, but this is more of a request ;) Do you have a video that shows how SMD LED's are made?

This is why so many LEDs are unreliable. They quote figures of 10's of thousands of hours, but in practice it's much less.
@infinitesolarforall3901
5 жыл бұрын
olsmokey not so true, the process here is to wirebond and cast the LEDs in resin, the number one reason of failure is overheating and running the LEDs with too much current, normally the led doesn’t fail, the powersupply fails. For white leds the running temperature is even more important because the phosphorus cannot handle more than 85 degrees or so if more it will degrade and the conversion efficiency will drop dramatically

Hi there Tarinder, im not sure what this machine costs, but you need several machines to complete the process, for LED strips they make SMD LED's that are then soldered to the flexible PCB of the strip. that strip is than coated with a silicone to water proof it and make it last. for that production process you can also use just an SMT machine, and a glue machine. you dont have to own the LED assembly machines.

I have a couple of questions since you offered. 1.) are the LED’s sorted by light characteristics because they get mixed up in production or is every led produced slightly different from another and they are just sorted to obtain a higher characteristic tolerance. 2.) how much does each LED cost to make? 3.) who invested the money for the machines and how long does it take before one pays for itself. This is very cool to me, thanks for sharing.

Hey man, sure! So these are RGB leds, the dice that are inside are 450 nm (blue) 532nm ( green) and 650nm ( red) they are manufactured separately before assembly. Each led chip is incredibly cheap costing cents only. They are fed in to the machine on wafer boards where the pick and place machine can pick them up and place them inside the led frame. The machines cost quite allot, my estimate is about 50-80 K usd for the placers and wire bonding machines and even much more for the binning machine that sorts the LEDs. So that machine park there costs well over a million usd. ROI depends on market prices for leds and raw material cost. There is a reason why these companies run 24 hours a day, their margins are quite small so all they can do is make massive quantities of leds.

@@infinitesolarforall3901 you have a really cool job, I wish there was more manufacturing like this in the US just because I really like industrial automation but I guess the low profit margins are what keeps that from happening. I've noticed that china is starting to make a lot of machines now (cnc, injection molding, ect.). What do you attribute that to? Do you think China is starting to climb the manufacturing hierarchy? and where do you project most manufacturing to take place in the future. If you had to give one piece of information about Chinese manufacturing and quality control, to me an american engineer who has never been to China, what would it be. Thanks, great video by the way, really appreciate it!

lsm13b The probability that LEDs are 100% identical is very low. There will always be manufacturing tolerances. These tolerances can be from clearly visible to barely visible. You could see that in the exam at 6:15, how the point between the 4 categories jumped criss-cross.

You could maybe fuse the dies directly on the chip (maybe at the chip fab?), but this would make the chip bigger and thus more expensive, and you'd still need to run each one through the stitching machine to connect the chip to the pins.
