Whatever flaws Alicent has, Rhaenyra was right in her speech. Alicent served Viserys with unwavering devotion and fealty. She nursed him as his health declined.

The scenes with Rhaenyra tell me that all she ever really wanted was a meaningful and sincere apology and acknowledgement for all the dutiful hard work she's been doing. She hadn't been getting that from Rhaenyra until now, clearly. That combined with disowning Aegon as her son, helped her to come around and see Rhaenyra would be the better choice after all. She feels extreme bitterness resentment and hurt, made worse by her shitty marriage. But it was never really hate. or else the scenes in this episode with Rhaenyra can't happen. She is a complex tragic villain

I have a hard time even seeing her as a villain. To me its almost more of a "Cap vs Iron man" situation with heroes ( or heroines) trapped on a opposing sides by forces outside their control.

I agree with this so much. It’s clear that Alicient has played part of duty in this entire series and felt she was getting absolutely nothing for it. Meanwhile Rhaenyra was breaking every duty bestowed upon women and was getting no consequence for it. Perhaps there was jealousy, but who wouldn’t be frustrated by that? But just a moment of recognition for everything she suffered in order to do her duty was all Alicient needed. I know what happened next wasn’t great, but I do think that Alicient genuinely believed that Viserys changed his mind - and that she was put in an impossible situation after.

@Dreamfyre which is of course ridiculous misleading nonsense. alicent had no choice and was a 15 year old girl. way to completely remove a grown man (viserys) agency and free will.

This really broke my heart because I love both characters. These are two powerful women who were used as pawns in the horrible games of men. Truly. They didn't ask for any of what they got, but they both did what they had to do to survive each others situations. They should have just been honest with each other from the start.

Well said. The real tragedy is the fact that they truly could have reconciled their differences… If it weren’t for their spiteful children carrying on the petty squabbles of their grandfathers. By the time the two of them realize their shared kinship it’s already too late. The seeds of resentment have been firmly planted in their children and everything from that point onward is just a slowly collapsing house of cards. It’s tragic, Shakespearean irony.

Ever since GoT season 5 I’ve been opposed to pretty much any change that HBO makes to the ASOIAF lore and characters. Except for making Rhaenyra and Alicent former childhood friends. It adds so much more to their dynamic and the tragedy of the Dance of the Dragons

This just makes everything to come that much more tragic for all involved. 😭 Scenes like this & Jace/Baela and Lukr/Rhaena’s betrothals make me dream of what could have been.

If Otto weren't such a snake who basically pimped out his daughter, an alliance or bond (platonic or romantic based on your own preference) between Alicent and Rhaenyra would have been unstoppable. If Alicent backed Rhaenyra it may have brought a Golden Age to Westeros. Regardless of what Otto has said, I firmly believe no amount of political pressure would have compelled (tv show) Rhaenyra to harm Alicent's children.

You know what’s funny. I got the feeling that if Alicent didn’t marry Vyseris, Rhaenyra would likely appointed Alicent as queen hand. She would toss Otto immediately, and get Alicent. Because Alicent was loyal person. She also listen to small folk so she will be able to guide Rhaenyra through out her reign. I could already imagine Daemon and Alicent fight all the time. But Rhaenyra would listen to Alicent all the time. 😂
