Hitwan National Park is a protected area in Nepal that is home to a significant population of one-horned Indian rhinoceroses, also known as greater one-horned rhinoceroses. The park is one of the few places in the world where these rhinoceroses can be found in the wild.
One-horned rhinoceroses are the largest of the three Asian rhinoceros species and are easily recognized by their single horn, which can grow up to 25 inches long. They are herbivores and feed on a variety of plants, including grasses, leaves, and fruits.
Chitwan National Park is home to approximately 600 one-horned rhinoceroses, making it one of the largest populations of this species in the world. The park also provides habitat for many other species, including tigers, leopards, sloth bears, gharials (a type of crocodile), and more than 500 species of birds.
Unfortunately, one-horned rhinoceroses are endangered due to habitat loss, poaching for their horns, and other factors. Conservation efforts in Chitwan National Park and other areas are crucial for the survival of this species.
