It is s mind-boggling that a scholar with your impeccable credentials can deliver 13 minutes of such rubbish. Your resume of Cecil Rhodes replicates the mindset of a 9th grader. Shocking, positively shocking.

*UPDATE* The college have said that the statute will remain due to the cost and red tape of taking in down. *HOWEVER* what to share with you this little bit from the BBC report *The college said the majority of submissions to the inquiry backed the retention of the statue but the commission still decided to recommend its removal.*

Claiming Britain enslaved Africa while completely ignorant of the fact that the empire abolished it decades before Rhodes was even born while they actively made an effort to suppress the slave trade Africans themselves didn't want to give up.
@justonecornetto80

@Dewayne Roberts Just about every European power benefitted from slavery but the simple fact is, the slave trade could not have existed without African slavers. White men didn't go into the interior of Africa to get the slaves, it was Africans who did that. African rulers took slaves from defeated enemies as war booty then transported them to the coast to be sold to Europeans. They even sold their own subjects in times of hardship. It was a joint enterprise and this is a fact that the likes of BLM are keen to gloss over in order to push their victimhood narrative. You imply that the British empire was dependent on slavery yet it didn't reach the peak of its power until nearly a century after it had abolished the practice and later waged war on those who continued it. I would also add that when the British seized control of the Cape Colony from the Dutch in 1806, they immediately set about repealing slavery there and it was completely eradicated by 1820. Treatment of blacks in the Cape Colony was infinitely better in the Cape compared with the Boer Republics and it was the Cape that was a safe haven for many blacks during the Mfecane which was a black on black holocaust that led to up 2 million people being slaughtered. As for Cecil Rhodes, he was a man of his time no different to many US industrialists who were willing to wade through native populations to achieve their vision. The ironic thing is that he wouldn't have been able to seize what became Rhodesia if king Lobengula hadn't practiced slavery because it was Lobengula's attacks on the Mashona (who he regarded as slaves) which gave Rhodes to the pretext to invade Matabeleland and topple him. Rhodes was greedy, not necessarily evil but the simple fact is, what is now South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia became the most prosperous parts of Africa because of him. They're only shitholes today because of the corruption of post colonial black rulers.

Removing a statue is not necessarily erasing it: history isn’t a static thing, it’s constantly changing and being made (including the BLM movement causing it to be removed). If you don’t want to destroy the statue entirely you could always move it to a museum and surround it with the context in which it was made, which would be much more beneficial than just leaving it stand. But by simply leaving the statue up you’re glorifying the person it’s of and providing very little background information. Most of the time this leads to us completely erasing the terrible crimes committed by the person, and as you say: how can we learn from history if we erase it?

My first comment is that destroying statues is something the Taleban and middle-age catholic church did. Down the memory hole as it were. Second comment is that Rhodes actually was ahead of his time, his scholarship being given to black long long before it became fashionable. Rhodes leadership was based on the idea that university education helps all men regardless of race.

What about statues of non-whites who also were responsible of colonialism, slavery, genocide etc, who still have not been removed? What about the statues of Timur, a turkic-mongol conqureror who massacred, genocided and enslaved millions of indians, arabs, persians, armenians, georgians and europeans? Or what about the statues of Luis de Carvajal, a sephradic conquistador who conquored Northern Mexico and enslaved thousands of American Natives? Why haven't these statues been removed? Why are we just focusing on removing status of white slave traders and racists?
