As a former prison chaplain, that is one of the worst calls you ever have to make--that call to the family or with the inmate to the family when their loved one has passed. And being the one to show compassion to an inmate when no one else--including the inmate themself--will love them. Derek Carr isn't just being an outstanding leader and friend. He is working in the role of a chaplain--and I say he's a top-notch chaplain for the team in general, and for Henry Ruggs in particular. DC is one inspiring individual.

Once I got my education and experience in line with the job requirements, I went through the application process and was hired. As someone that is not religious, I must say: I have alway's had tremendous respect for the one's who are, and walk the walk. It is a more rare thing, than it should be. I know we are all human, and we all make mistakes. But, to act as if you are a better person, than the next, BECAUSE you go to (a specific)church. Or act/say thing's about faith, their religion, or what they believe in: only to then react, and treat other's, in way's that are not reflective of what that faith/religion preaches and stands for. I see this behavior every day (I work in health care, but also, just living in a society), and it is disturbingly disappointing to me. Hypocritical, deceitful behavior make's me more angry than the one's that act in the same deplorable ways, without using their faith/religion as a shield when it is convenient to do so. I am not condoning that behavior, it just doesn't make me feel as negatively toward the person commiting said act. Luckily, I have met some folks that are the first to admit wrong doing, while also not casting stones, speaking first of love, while showing infinite patience and compassion. Those people walk the walk, or give it their all, and are constantly mindful of how their words and actions, not only represent what they stand for, but also, affect the people around them at any given time. I have the utmost respect and admiration for those folks. They use their religion and faith, for what it should be used for: a code of conduct (all of the time, not just Sunday's - or whatever day their religion congregates to show fellowship), and a tool to help themselves, and everyone/thing around them. I have alway's thought Carr, the football player, was unfairly criticized. But, hearing him speak to this, in this manner, make's me admire him that much more. He seems to be a genuinely caring human being, and his job is just that: a job. It is not an embodiment of who he is, as a person.

@@rolmodel12. Your post should have way more likes!! I've always liked and had respect for D Carr as well and felt he was treated unfairly too. His character, heart and strength showed in that video. Sometimes I wonder if the NFL missed an opportunity of true racial discussions by having Gruden "cancelled" - bc there are plenty of owners that speak that way and will continue to own teams. IDK, maybe if there are examples of ppl who are in key positions of authority, who made mistakes not only give an apology but if - if they want to make things right w/those they hurt then they should face those ppl, have the difficult conversations of how they can possibly work thru it. It may seem superficial to some ppl, but just the idea alone that someone that once had disgusting views of key members of the organization and ppl in society can slowly change then at least ppl will feel that change is possible.

You say that because it wasn’t your son or friend or family member that was drunk driving and killed someone. Nobody thinks he shouldn’t go to jail or that family that lost there daughter shouldn’t be Angry and Hurt. But I know if my son or nephew had done something like this, I would cry cuz I knew he threw he’s life away because he was a dumbass. Tina didn’t deserve to die due to he’s recklessness, her life was taken from her because of he’s selfish act, that is also affecting he’s family. And everyone that knew him.

Honestly, the bigger issue I feel is how society treats drinking, how sports orgs (actually corporates in general) mentor and manage their valuable assets. These people have a ton of money and status thrown at them at a young age because they can play a sport. Combined with celebrity culture and attitudes around drinking, that doesn't make for very good combination for young people trying to make mature decisions. As the sports org, you can't dictate what someone can do, but you can build a culture and strict guidelines, with mature mentoring and zero tolerance for certain behaviours. These people are 'professionals' with a contract and job. They need to learn how to be professional. I have sympathy for Ruggs because I'm sure he knows he's has destroyed a life and potentially ruined his own through his own actions. RIP to Tina and her dog. An absolute avoidable tragedy.
