Not to go off topic, but watching this, I was suddenly and painfully reminded of how much class ESPN used to have.

People weren’t united prior to 9/11. The seeds of political partisanship had been planted in the 70s and 80s. Al-Qaeda failed miserably though, because despite that growing division, the country came together to confront the horror of that day.

Wow. Just wow. I’m choked up and completely covered with goosebumps after this. You’re absolutely right about everything you said. I’m a Braves fan from the 100+ loss per season days, but even I was applauding Mike Piazza’s bomb this night. Always remember. NEVER FORGET! And never apologize for showing your emotions like this! God Bless You and have a wonderful night.

how times has changed! back in 01" after the attack when we need the Sports to lift the Nation and they did it with class. I remembered when the NFL got back after 9-11 when they were showing all 1pm games and they show the US Flag and everybody stand and sang the national anthem... it's sad to bring people together, regardless of their background, a tragedy has to happen

I still think baseball is America’s game and I remember 9/11 like it was yesterday. I remember being in a Chicago hotel that morning and looking out over a Lakeshore drive with no people and no traffic. I’m a 3rd generation Texan married to a New Yorker. I love NYC and a 9/11 does not and will never again pass where I won’t get emotional and pray that we never take our national security for granted again. Thanks for the memory RE.

In a world which has seemingly become so insular and tribal, sports should serve as one of the ultimate avenues of coalescence. I've long thought you to be the best, no-bs, no hype, straight from the heart sports journalist in America (and I'm speaking as a Canadian who has horrifyingly vivid memories of 9/11 - sat on a dialysis machine watching the horror unfold). Moments like this only cement that opinion further. You're a great man, Rich. Best to you and your family and to everyone who seeks to bring people together, instead of to divide.

Piazza's homerun was the FIRST time NYC roared after 9/11. It wasn't an angry roar. It was a happy roar. It was a needed roar. That's why it's the most iconic homerun in NYC history because it resonated with the entire city. Anyone who tells you its not the most iconic homerun in NYC history is clueless.

I'm a die hard Cubs fan and Mark Grace is my favorite Cub ever. So when his D Backs made it to the World Series that year I would have been rooting for him all the way but I still found it bittersweet how he got his ring because I wanted the Yankees to win it all because I'm an "American" before I'm a "Cubs fan" or a "Grace fan". I've always thought it would have to have almost been bittersweet even for the players in their heart of hearts because the people of NY would have really loved to have seen the Yankees win it all that year of all years.

As Rich talked about those days & weeks after 9/11 were dark times filled with Fear , anxiety, anger , Love , sorrow , & resolve ... I remember watching the MLB Playoffs & being so proud of the way the Yankees lifted NYC & the country with their magical WS Run ....seeing NYPD / FD @ the games enjoying themselves- if only for a few hours they were able to focus on something besides the horrors of Ground Zero . As a Sox fan I’ve of course Hated NYY But In 2001 , I couldn’t help but pull for ‘em with every fiber of my being . It’s sad that the unity felt after 9 / 11 didn’t last long & as a country we find ourselves at each others throats. Hopefully it doesn’t take another catastrophic event for us to find common ground ... down with those who seek to divide us thru Fear & anger

First I just want to say that nothing could ever make American citizens forget or forgive what had happened on 9/11 or even compare to it. Some people may say that a game of baseball is irrelevant when it comes to life and so forth, nor any true importance into human lives, that it’s just a kids game played by entitled rich athletes, and that they aren’t true heroes or role models when it comes to how much our first responders get paid by putting their lives on the lines. But man, I honestly feel sorry for those people that feel that way about this game. They’re totally clueless and are looking at it the wrong way!! Wether it’s significant or not isn’t the point of it. What truly matters is the perception in people’s mind of what it stands for in terms of healing!!

Thats because they train us to only care about the humans that live within our borders, or who know what we know, or wear the clothes or uniforms we wear. ...and that that is true caring.
