@@roberttompkins6489 YES.... they certainly SHOULD have been more successful! Another group from Ann Arbor was the Rationals. The main reason I am mentioning the Rationals is because of the similarity of their history......as compared with Richard and the Young Lions. Both groups were really, REALLY good ( I prefer Richard and the Young Lions...... although I DO recognize that the Rationals were deserving of good praises). Both groups lacked good management...... good promotional efforts...... just a grand lack of good management. BOTH groups received good ratings REGIONALLY. However......both groups failed to "take off" in a NATIONAL way. That.....to me.....is such a great shame.

You guys were huge back in the day. I remember when 96 Tears went number 1 on the Big 8. Was it Dick Clark who presented you guys with your gold record on the steps of Saginaw High School? I met a guy named Chris Correll in Ann Arbor back in the late 70's who claimed he played guitar for the Mysterians after you. Is that true or was he bullshitting me?
@robertleebalderrama9602

the person who gave us our gold record was Neil Bogart who was our producer and vice president of Cameo-parkway, yes Chris Correll actually took my place when I quit the band in 1969, then when he quit the band he moved out to LA and hooked up with Michael Jackson and toured with him,

Hey , Bobby. How are ya ? I saw the first Richard and The Young Lions reunion show in 2000. They sounded incredible , because they practiced for a year , and , instead of doing tired old bar band numbers , they filled the set out with covers of songs from the Nuggets box set , which I took as a show of solidarity , as well as doing their three great Phillips singles.

Growing up about 75 miles north of Boston I heard some GREAT tunes on the radio that I thought were HUGE national hits until I looked over the Billboard charts at the end of the year but all of 1966 went by and I never heard "Open Up Your Door" till I had to move to Anchorage, AK, in 1968. A DJ at one of the local AM stations used this as his theme song and I ended up getting a 45 of this as soon as I could find one. I've had this on one of my own garage band "workout" tapes since forever and whenever it comes on, I tend to push the envelope even harder (well, at 70 it don't come as easy as it once did...)!

I have the original 45 R.P.M. of "Open Up Your Door" by Richard and the Young Lions, this from the mid-Sixties, as too the case with "Can't Seem to Make You Mind" and "Pushin' Too Hard" by The Seeds. For whatever reason, these three tours-de-force recordings never achieved the appreciation they were worthy of until they were collected, this rather recently, on CDs ("Rang Tang Ding Dong" by The Cellos being another such instance). Odd that the other works by these artists weren't of the same unique and spectacular quality; and a shame when the respective groups, to my knowledge, didn't live to experience their belated acclaim. Sincerely, Ray Cabana, Jr.

What a great Garage rock track this is - "Open Up Your Door" was first released as a single in August 1966, and it managed to reach number 99 on the Billboard Hot 100 but dropped out the following week. The song was much more successful on regional level, where it charted in the top five in every market it was released. In Detroit, Michigan the single peaked at number one and Motown Records approached Richard and the Young Lions to become the first white group promoted on the label, unfortunately however, the band refused and they soon broke apart. Brilliant, thanks for sharing this absolute Gem
@davekapulsky

+Anthony Gort Well they would not have been the first white group signed to Motown, possibly one that they would have promoted, but I find that story to be untrue. The first white group signed to Motown was the Valadiers which had their music issued on the Motown subsidiary label, Gordy, same label as Temptations and Martha & Vandellas. Motown would have only found out about Richard & Young Lions when "Open Up Your Door" received action and play in Detroit, but by then, Richard & Young Lions had a multi-single deal with another major label, Philips Records.

EN R I rediscovered this tune back in 1998 (after wearing my 45 out back in '67) when I bought the four CD set "Nuggets" compiled by Lenny Kaye. The set has some classic garage and early psychedelic tunes. Even at my advanced age, I am not above have a few beers and whipping out the air guitar for this tune.

motorcityquig Hello "motor" You have made my day !!! I am going to re-research I-Tunes for this,,,,and me being at that advanced age as well, and being the festive season, no reason to not share a few "cold" Canadian ones here as well. Drop me a note if you care to join me sometime. Growing up 45 minutes north of Detroit (Port Huron area), more great memories and music was produced, discovered, and aired by CKLW than Mustangs came out of Ford. I wouldn't have wanted to been anywhere else in the 60's. Thanks again to you!

This was from the Windsor, Ontario after school dance show, "Swingin' Time", hosted by "The Bird", Robin Seymour. Many major acts peformed on this show, whcih were always lip-synched. The local bands were always played live (go figure). On any give day, you had no idea who was performing. Bob Seger, ? and the Mysteriians, Little Carl Carlton, Canned Heat, Temptations, etc. As for Richard and the YL's, you can really see that New Jersey attitude in their stage presence.

If there were such a thing as justice, this would be a 1967 Grammy awards clip we'd be seeing this on, not another teen dance show.
