Thank you, Steven, for your enthusiasm about the restoration and for building bridges, your role is so significant! I am LDS with a Lutheran background living in Germany, and I realise where I need to engage myself more actively in embracing other religions around me, there is such a wealth of knowledge to acquire. Thank you for the respect and excitement you show towards the restoration movement, it is contagious! I’m in the middle of reading Rough Stone Rolling, so having Richard Bushman on again was a real bonus!

A wager: Bushman is secretly ashamed of his support of the mormon scam. He wants one foot in real scientific history and one foot in the big mormon fib so he doesn't have to go through the messy effort to come clean. He would serve humanity better if he got honest

Respect beliefs and testimonies based on feelings. 😂. The fact of the matter is there were never any gold plates because there were never any Nephites. Period dot. There are no Nephites, there is zero evidence for them and they are entirely fictional. Even the LDS church is moving away from the BoM being actual history. No Nephites equals no plates. It’s that simple. Let’s not forget no culture was literate in the Americas prior to the Europeans arriving. The best we can do is secondary oral cultures like the Mayans. Secondary Oral cultures did not produce narratives and or write books. Finally, the BoM culture was millions of people who were literate and writing. So where is all the writing? Jesus, King Benjamin told them to write and distribute their sermons. Not to mention all the other things that were written as the BoM tells us. So where is it? We have thousands of Roman and Greek writing examples cultures who were literate. With the millions of Nephites and Lamanites where is all their writing? There is a reason it doesn’t exist for the same reason the golden plates don’t exist it’s because they are fictional. You don’t get to believe in something with zero evidence based on feelings and call it true. I’m sorry you don’t.

Great video! I thought the part about churches forming alliances instead of seeing eachother in competition was very moving and I fully agree. Also I think Professor Bushman is a great ambassador for the faith: open-minded, fair, optimistic, considerate. Like you said you can research academically what is the church all you want but the real proof of the church's value is in the people.

Steven, you're a very good interviewer! You bring a high degree of scholarship to the subjects you're speaking on. And, I find your perspective both interesting and unique. You obviously do not believe the core tenants of the restored gospel or else you'd get baptized, but neither are you contentious or condescending as most outside the faith are, particularly those with KZitem channels aimed at us. I don't think Richard Bushman does a great job here answering your questions but, full disclosure, I'm not his biggest fan. Have you considered interviewing Dan Peterson? Particularly since you're going down the road of the witnesses, Joseph's life outside his calling, and the culture in which the gospel was restored. I don't think anyone knows more about these topics or is better at explaining them.

@@Tom-fo5ce that’s the dumbest thing I have ever heard. Joseph Smith did not have a copy of the Quran anywhere near him. He could not have copied it. It was inspired by God, just as much of the Quran was. God gave Mohommed some knowledge and wisdom to help his people. Sadly, sometimes what man receives from God they mess up and fall. But it doesn’t mean God didn’t dispense the knowledge of it. Most members of the Church think Mohammed could have been a prophet who either fell or people corrupted his memory and they fell into their own tradition based on what was dispensed, similar to how Christianity was corrupted by the political leaders of the day. God also gave Ellen G. White a vision of what looks identical to the Nauvoo temple. She was a contemporary of Joseph Smith yet they never met and never conversed. How could they have both received the same vision? Because GOD dispensed it.

Is the host of this show LDS? Was suggested this channel and have noticed a trend of persons who claim to be evangelical but appear to credit the BOM as scripture and seem to accept the teachings/doctrines of the church. Not trying to be critical but wondering if it’s just evangelicals learning about Mormonism to convert or just Mormons posing as evangelicals 🤷🏻♀️ there seems to be quite a few lately reading the BOM, attending services etc.

Whether Joseph Smith Jr. used the Spectacles or Seer Stone or both together, they were regular objects until God gave them power, same for the Breastplate Of Judgement. Is it really so hard to believe that God could change a stone to show truth, when man can make a Smartwatch "stone" that can show everything true or false that mankind knows?

If he made it up after all he went through he would have said I made this up I’ve had enough. If he made it up and had those who were witnesses would you take their membership from them. “Indigenous identity, history, sovereignty, and belief systems have not only been dismissed but replaced with a limited, racialized identity grounded in Mormon religious discourse."
