Ah so sad. Such a beautiful lady😥. This series is one of my all time favourites as is the book. I read the book before the series came out. It's stunning. Yoko Shimada was just as I imagined her. Richard Chamberlain was amazing in this too. They don't make them like this anymore, sadly. Fond memories of my youth💖

@@kdfrk247 I recommend that everyone who enjoyed the series should read the book and then watch the movie again. The book fills in a lot of holes in the story that are just hinted at or completely passed over in the movie. Even serious students of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the years leading up to it might be helped in their understanding of the movie because of the liberties taken with the actual events.

It wasn't as much as quick thinking as it was just that the Japanese where so buried into formality. Blackthorn was just unpredictable. In this particular case he leaned into the stereotype of barbarians. In the books it made a little more sense. A woman, I don't remember who, was supposed to be there so he said that they were violating a woman's virtue by looking inside. Again, using their own misconceptions of foreigners. It was going to be a bloodbath, but Aijin saved them from that with his antics. The other Japanese were just going to kill each other.

@@aronzimas5660 No, "woman's virtue" is from 2024 series. In the book, Blackthorn yells about a prince giving a letter himself being bad luck just like in the 1980 adaptation. It didn't make sense that in 2024 version a samurai fails to obey a simple order just because someone would shout at him.

Having read the book a couple times but never seen this, this is disappointing. Was expecting a hornpipe as per the books and story arc - kzitem.info/news/bejne/tq-BrIFuZqt9lXY - this is just lazy directing and choreography and a big missed opportunity. Especially as after Toranaga's victory after leaving Osaka, Blackthorn teaches him the hornpipe, and at his great victory over Ishido at the end Toranaga dances a hornpipe to himself. They also didn't do this with the new series. A bit sad.

This kind of military or "war" dances are very athletic, and an actor would have had to train for several weeks all day, especially if requested to blow in a pipe at the same time, unless the character was not pictured as proficient in them in the book.

He nearly was in the book, because Blackthorne actually took a swing at Ishida after the latter slapped him. The only reason Ishida didn't kill him on the spot was because Mariko convinced him Blackthorne had gone batshit, and in gaijin culture it was unlucky to hand over a message like a commoner--that Blackthorne was trying to save Ishida from dishonor. As Yabu had convinced Ishida that Blackthorne might be useful in the future, Ishida decided the gaijin wasn't worth killing. (And technically, Blackthorne was English, not American--the United States was still 166 years in the future.)

@@PolarizedMechs "Yankee” dates from the seventeenth century (1601-1700), when the British and the Dutch were fighting for possession of New York. It was originally used by the Dutch to insult the British. Also Yankee is believed to originated from the Dutch equivalent of the English name John.

This scene is just as disappointing as are so many others in this series. In the book, Blackthorne reacts to the slap by trying to choke the life out of Ishido. He doesn't start playing fool until after the slap. Lack of faithfulness to the book is a major and glaring fault in the series. Such as: 1. Mariko is better looking than Kiku in the movie, not so in the book. 2. Hiromatsu never has his sword in his hands, while in the book he always does. 3. Except for the seppuki scene, Yabu looks more buffoonish than anything else. 4. Ishido isn't the right fit for the character. Realize the producers were under severe limitations during the filming, but there is no excuse for such character alterations, poor casting decisions or deviations from the book.
