Richard shares about his experience being treated for erectile dysfunction and bladder leakage.
His ED and incontinence were side effects of prostate cancer surgery. Richard chose to have a penile prosthesis and artificial urinary sphincter to correct the problems.
Richard was diagnosed with prostate cancer at age of 41. He was truly grateful to survive cancer, but he was emotionally devastated at being medically retired from his job as an Air Force pilot and having to cope with ED and bladder leakage.
In 1980, Richard's urologist surgically placed a penile prosthesis or penile implant to correct the E.D. Richard says that the implant not only restored his sexual function but made him feel whole and complete. Richard and his wife joke that he no longer has E.D - Erectile Dysfunction but has E.o.D. - Erection on Demand.
In 2011, Richard learned about the artificial urinary sphincter, a medical device that corrects moderate to severe male stress urinary incontinence. He underwent the operation with Dr. LeRoy A. Jones in San Antonio, Texas. After the procedure, Richard no longer leaked urine and was relived from the burden of wearing pads.
Richard shared his story at a community education lecture presented by Urology San Antonio. He hopes his story will help other men learn the lesser-known surgical treatments for ED and incontinence.
