No one else is capable of achieving his level of interpretation! He is still the greatest! No doubt about it!

this is the great, final achievement of a splendid Lifetime. "This piece was his life", a violinist of the Berlin Philharmonic told me. And this section of the Alpensinfonie will always be the most moving document of the greatest conductor of all times. A man full of contradictions and flaws, but who was first and foremost a lover of Music and Beauty, a source of inspiration, a master of psichology, a superb shaper of the finest musical phrasing ever heard, a human being who loved Nature, who cherished young talented people, who gave us all the chance to listen to the greates musics ever. Thanks to his movies, his recordings, his concerts. A source of envy for too many, a source of sheer joy and happiness and deep feelings for few of us. I am happy to be in these few. And today, at sunset, when approaching the day we remember His death (16th July), the memory is still strong in the minds of us, these "few". Who will remember him just as "The" Maestro. Because no one else is worthy this title. R.I.P. HERBERT VON KARAJAN - Salzburg 5th April 1908 - Salzburg 16th July 1989.

I will always remember that sad day. I was with a very special friend the day after, when I heard the news on a television news report. I shall never forget that day, It was an epiphany in so many ways, never forgotten after all these years. Each year I play one of the Maestro's perfect performances from my collection.

The best "Ausklang" I have ever heard. All the woodwinds lead a smooth passage, accompanied with a horn and a trumpet, and an organ "swims" below this marvelous music……Karajan balanced them so well……when the strings came in later, I imagine a slide of tear gleams on Strauss' memory……so touching, so moving!!! Great work, Karajan and BPO!!!

Actually the 1st horn and the trumpet have the theme, while the woodwinds accompany them with contrapunk passages :)

I have always thought Karajan's performance of this section is the highlight of the whole performance. And interestingly I saw on a BBC4 documentary about a week ago where the former Berlin Philharmonic principle oboe Hansjorg Schellenberger was talking about the very same section and how Karajan liked to rehearse this section, telling the orchestra that the words Strauss had written above the score, "in sanfte ecstase" were absolutely descriptive of how it should be played.Schellenberger said he must have performed it around 50 times with Karajan during his time with the orchestra and every time he was exhausted because of the intensity of this part. Schellenberger described it as "late afternoon sun".

How can you post such beautiful music then end it so abruptly with out letting it play out to the end?

Interesting fact about this performance and Karajan's 1980 recording is that Karajan and organist David Bell rewrote the organ part in this section of the music as Karajan regarded Strauss' writing for the organ to be "wasteful" and duplicating the wind parts.

This music requires the ``demonstrativeness'' of the individual conductor. In other words, in his life experience up to that point, he had actually experienced mountain climbing that put his body through a lot of stress, and if he had not experienced the process of climbing, reaching the summit, and descending the mountain as ``his own joy,'' This metaphysical mountain climbing experience is a ``fake.'' Even In that sense, this performance is "authentic."

Ever been to Garmisch-Partenkirchen? The Alps over there are not very impressive. The piece must mean something else.

Robert-it often does in my estimation. As in Elgar's Violin Concerto. I will say no more.
