I have never heard a Marke as good as Pape. That music was written to be sung just like he does. Sober, profound, expressing infinite sadness when realizing he has been treasoned.

The mastery of the Maestro is out of discussion. This is a great interpretation! Although I love his works, Wagner is certainly a controversial figure. I agree with those who see the "Tristan" as a milestone in art not only in music. Here we are talking about an expressive form, revolutionary compared to the past.

Urmana, Fujimura and Pape are outstanding as always. And the orchestra under Abbado is brilliant. There is exceptional clarity and wonderful sense of shape to the work as a whole

I don't know if it's because of the audio recording, but Tristan sounds very low...or... Is John Treleaven lacking of power in his voice?

What a disaster. Abbado should have never counducted Wagner!
@javiermarting

Wagner's music offers few chances: extraordinary and mediocre are too close. Treleaven is just an average, decent tenor with an ugly voice. And Abbado, a great conductor though he was, never really offered any extraordinary Wagner music. So, at the end, this rendition is just good but far from others. Thielemann's Wagner is far superior as is Barenboim's.

There may be certain shortcomings vocally, granted. However Abbado stands out remarkably here and elevates the proceedings to a dramatic, searingly precise, yet delicate and detailed 'symphonic' interpretation of the score. Overall, an opportunity here to really immerse in the brilliance of Wagner's soundscapes and with an orchestra responding immaculately to Abbado's intention to craft such a rare orchestral operatic event, rarely and only ever achievable in a concert format.
