No one did it quite like Widmark, as psycho Tommy Udo. Really set the gold standard for bad guys. Offscreen, the most affable of gentlemen, Widmark was totally astonished that Kiss of Death, with the famous scene (won't spoil it for anyone who has not seen it) took off the way it did. His phone never stopped ringing after that....

Wow. I love gangster movies as a rule, but only seen snippets of this film. I always liked Richard Widmark, great in pretty much everything he did, but this character was a new revelation to me. However, my attention was diverted to Victor Mature, a more understated role, a really convincing counterpoint to Tommy Udo's unstable and constant menace. These two worked really well together. Definitely renting this tonight, looking forward to it! Btw I showed Mean Streets of yet again with a friend last night, films like these provide additional depth to understanding mob films of the next generation.

Let's get this straight: The comic version of the Joker was copied from Conrad Veldt's character in the film _The Man Who Laughs_ . Richard Widmark in _Kiss of Death_ was influenced by the Joker from the comics. Frank Gorshin's Riddler was influenced by Richard Widmark's character Tommy Udo. Heath Ledger was influenced by Richard Widmark's portrayal, Tom Waits' 1979 Australian tv interview, and Malcolm MacDowell's portrayal of Alex in _Clockwork Orange_ .

There’s something about Tommy Udo that’s oddly sexy. I’d say he’s more of a loose cannon which I wouldn’t call elegant in the slightest, but definitely exciting. I feel like I would get along with him well, given we share a solid amount of traits. As much as I hate to broadcast it, he lacked quite a bit between the ears (in both book smarts and street smarts) which is exactly why he got the ending he did. Maybe it’s his distinct sense of fashion he had going with the white tie and everything else in black, I really dig that! Or it could be the fact that Richard Widmark is perfect in every way... I would honestly thank him if he kicked me down a flight of stairs while acting as Tommy Udo.

Great film, superb acting. But I would like to note a long-standing criticism in relation to Kiss of Death which is not at all aimed at the film or it's actors but rather at we the people as audience. I submit that the film's scores of multi-generational viewers have not yet picked up on some of this movies' more compex subtleties, particularly regarding the Tommy Udo role and story. This has led to us pigeon-holing Udo as some kind of 'bad guy', even 'crazy' with no redeeming qualities, despite ample evidence to the contrary. There is an abundance of on-film documentaton to show there's more than just the judgemental, naughty and negative to say about Tommy Udo. I don't know why this has not yet been pinpointed but I think the film lays out plenty of documented proofs of Udo's complex make-up, including his humanity, his 'good' side and even some very admirable aspects of his character, showing he's not so bad. In fact, in full-contemplation of his back-story, his endemic challenges of poverty and lack of education, we may rightly say that Udo is admirable and even a better person than most of us for his tenacity and refusal to let hard circumstance rob him of his sunny disposition in the face of major life challenges. In fresh-look ponderings of this film and character, you folks just may likewise come to reconsider the usual Udo caricature as mere 'hopless villian' as I do--unfair, unreasonable, undocumented and inaccurate. You may then seek nuance of thought and attempt a new and balanced Udo characterization by re-evaluating Tommy as imperfect man who may make mistakes but also exhibits his humanity in tandam with herculean inner-strength, ageless wisdom, deep persective, an unbeatable and positive world view and even a charming wit. Let's take a that fresh look now at Tommy Udo, the misunderstood. Again, we all know Tommy was not perfect. He did too and emitted a natural, almost-Zen self-awareness about his own shortcomings to the point of emotionally accepting those blemishes in fullness. When Udo is on screen, it's obvious we are witnessing a man who knows what he is and is not. Udo knows which of his characteristics others have judged negatively but does not wither, complain, lose hope or run away. He does not give up and does not beat himself up for not being 'Mr. Perfect' or not living up to what his friends, associates or society think he should live up to. Here Udo shows a depth of maturity, rugged individuality and intuitve self-understanding far beyond what most of us can claim to possess. Moreover, it is in Udo's very acceptance of self that he transcends himself and can accept others, even the many judgmental 'hater' characters he faces almost constantly throughout the film, not to mention us in the audience. In these ways and as relate to temperate psychic balance and astounding emotional intelligence, Tommy Udo is not only not lacking or 'bad' but in fact light years ahead of most of most of us as also-flawed members of Club-Humanity. So, while the Tommy Udo character may have his bugaboos and his nicks-in-armour, he's also been unfairly, irrationally maligned as 'all bad' like some sort of 'booger-man' or at least as an 'inferior' human. The movie shows us that the whole truth about Tommy may be quite to the contrary. For instance, throughout the film and even while in jail, facing the court system, police, crippled moms in wheelchairs and other powerful adversities, we should take notice that Udo displays a perserverance few of us can fathom. No matter what is happening around him or what nit-picking or poison-arrow-gossip his peers to fire at him to undermine him as gangster, murderous psychopath or terrifying person, Udo maintains his happy disposition. He does not feed into the negativity of others or circumstances around him but maintains his admirable and powerfully-positive outlook throughtout almost all of the film in abiding hope to overcome. This is easily evidenced from start to finish of the film. We never see Udo disracted by his neigh-sayers and never do we hear the common 'whoa-is-me moans' from Udo about his problems or the problems others have with him, displaying a very rare strength of character in his stoic, rock-like fortitude. Udo does not let life get to him. Can we say we are as cool under strain? This is also patently-demonstrated many times and easily provable by any objective re-viewing Kiss of Death. Tthere are about 9 scenes to which I can refer, here. In fact, you agree after watching Kiss of Death again that we as men may do well to take some lessons in life-management from Tommy. Udo is a man of action who always takes direct, corrective action after identifying a problem. Does that sound like a cartoon villian or more like the can-do-spirit of a cheerful, calm, cool and collected man of perspective who knows himself, forgives himself, accepts himself and all circumstances and who's able to habitually laugh-in-the-face-of-fear? Do you think maybe we could lear from Tommy and don't we wish we had a Tommy Udo as a Manager at work or family Uncle or that he was our college roommate or local police officer. We do wish so because we need a strong man like him to lend a hand and lead the way! Wouldn't it be nice to be able to handle life like Tommy? His iconic response to big problems should be a model for how all of us should aspire to handle our life-traps. Tommy first breaks into his broad, toothy, devil-may-care-grin. Then we see him become even happier in the face of challenges, typically laughing aloud, probably as he ponders, regaining his balanced perspective and remembering what's really important. Consistenly and throughout the movie, we see Udo keep his cool, then access and rely on his great wisdom of perspective before taking action. That's because Tommy knows. Yes, Tommy knows. What I mean is Tommy knows that whatever the problem, it cannot be more important than sharing a laugh with friends or even the crippled, elderly mother of the former mob associate he's trying to locate for his revenge-kill. He won't let it be more important or give it more gravity than is due. In the looking-to-murder-former-mob-colleague-scene-at-his-mother's-home scene, Tommy shows he hasn't fogotten what he knows, that he is still human and still Tommy. Despite the major stressor of not being successful in locating his former 'rat' mob associate, Udo still takes it in stride and even makes time to chat with his would-be victim's handicapped mother. Further, Tommy is fully in-the-moment and attentive to the other human being in the room, regaling her with anecdotes about her son and yes, laughing aloud next to her to spread his good cheer before murdering his old workmate's crippled mom instead. So despite a clear failure of plan and increasingly stressful professional situation, Tommy stays Tommy and stays human, chatting ebulliently with the wheelchair-bound mom of his former 'rat' friend and taking his time to connect with her before tying helpless, handicapp-mom to her own wheelchair with lamp-wire and then gleafully thrusting her down steep stairs to her gruesome demise. Tommy knows. Beyond perspective--here and always--Tommy displays an indomitable spirit, overcoming life-strife through his PMA. (Positive Mental Attitude.) How many of us can say we live up to this sort of happy, winning, strong, balanced and sagacious outlook when adversity rears it's ugly head? I only hope when you all watch the film again, you'll try to emulate Tommy in his zen-like approach, wiping your mind clean of your hard-bitten, irrational and judgement-laden 'bias' against Udo as 'bad'. Think anew, watch anew and revisit your irrational conclusions about my friend Tommy. You may even start by asking yourself, what would Udo do? Ya squirts! Hehehehehe! Ya rats, I hate ya! I'll plug yuhs all in the belly so yiz can roll around awhile and have plenty of time think about it before I put ya lights out for ya. Hehehehehe!!
