What RW said in the first few minutes of this fine interview resonated with me, I have concluded on my own that much of the political situation in the US is a dog & pony show. RW said it was Punch & Judy. The ruling class allows democracy only to the extent that they can largely control it. But what do we, the commoners, do about it?

My take on the original Trump followers is that most of them believed that Trump would bring them the life they could not put together themselves. They were underachievers, or too psychologically damaged to find themselves. Trump was believed to bring them back into meaningful lives. This time Trump seems to appeal to a broad base, for obvious reasons. Anti Biden regime is a clear motive, now. If he makes it, I hope he selects his advisors wisely, instead of picking up the ones from the previous administration. Edit: There are many independent registered voters who will sit this election out. I wonder why. (heh)

I was agreeing with Professor Wolff until he starting talking about public debt. American taxes don’t service the interest repayments on Treasuries held by Japan and China. The Federal Reserve with a push of a computer button can pay the interest repayments as it’s denominated in American $ ‘s. The only reason any country buys bonds and treasuries in another nation, is because their interest rates are higher and more attractive in that nation. Public debt is a result of a succession of fiscal deficits that creates surpluses in the non-public or private sector. Public debt which isn’t spent mostly on the military or for wealthy via tax cuts, but for necessary social and economic infrastructure, is beneficial for any country. Private household debt is more concerning than public debt.

While I'm a big fan of Professor Wolfe I can't help but notice a problem with his glowing review of the Chinese economy. He tells us that the US practiced private capitalism while the USSR state capitalism & then goes on to state that China was successful using a combination of both. How does this intersect with his ideal system of worker's co-ops? Is he implying that the state owned businesses in China are operated as or like co-ops? He should clarify this point as it is essential to his theory of a just economy.
@defro125
13 минут бұрын
He has other videos where he discusses the Chinese economy and political scene in more detail. I believe he would say that the Chinese model is not his ideal, but it doesn't have to be. It is a successful one in the historical context of where we are now and Dr. Wolff would love to see a variety of alternative models of running the economy as it would help expand the knowledge pool of his field. As it stands now, the Chinese government wields power over the private sector which is the reverse in the US. The Chinese government directs much of its largesse and services produced from capital enterprises to its citizens, where in the US that protection is given to corporations. Worker co-ops are a more useful goal in a western context because workers gain more voice through their businesses then they can exert more influence on the government.

The Government doesn't print it, the Federal Reserve does. The Federal reserve is a private entity with stock holders. It's as "Federal" as Federal express.
@WeiShihong
3 сағат бұрын
Now when you ask the central bank to print one dollar it does so, with interest, meaning for every dollar the central bank prints -- you also need to print more to pay the interest that doesn't actually exist in circulation yet. It's a naturally inflationary system and you bring money out of circulation through taxation and interest rates on the money lent to banks and banks to the public. When you want low taxes they need to get that interest payment somewhere... So they borrow (in your names) with more interest because raising taxes doesn't get you elected. 🤷

I wonder if Richard Wolff is familiar with Jeff Sharlet and his recent book, The Undertow: Scenes from a slow civil war? I just watched an interview with him (on Chris Hedges' channel) in which Sharlet discussed the rise of fascism in the world, and specifically, how he views Trump as its ostensible messiah via the Christian nationalist movement in US. I appreciate the historical contextualizing of Richard Wolff's view of Trump, but it is impossible (for me) not to feel the pressure (nay, crushing) that the present political state of US and the world is exerting upon my usual ability to entertain the long view, as I can't rid myself of the picture of Atropos poised and ready to terminate humanity's existence.

The first thing to know about knowledge is that it doesn't exist. The best we can do is create theories that are consistent with what has been observed. So science recognizes only two kinds of theories, those proven wrong and those that haven't been proven wrong yet. When yo see the world through a prism of unshakable truths you are already wrong. The best most precise tool we have to express theories is mathematics. For all the good it is, it is by nature a human invented abstraction. It is not the real universe and therefore at best is an approximation of reality. So to everyone who tries to explain the world in whatever field you claim expertise in I say you are wrong. You can't prove a negative so I can't prove God doesn't exist but I haven't seen one credible shred of evidence that suggests God does exist. Socialism has proven every time it was tried to be a failed theory. Each failure has apologists who insist it is a valid theory but for one reason or another it faild because of factors not relevant to the theory itself. If you are an economist, philosopher, political scientist, priest or physicist you're wrong. All but one were easy to dismiss. That one was physicists. My problem began when I was 18 years old. What I was being taught in second year college physics made no logical sense, was filled with self contradictions. Given the powerful analytical tools I acquired in my education I eventually had to figure things out for myself. What I saw was very different from what they saw. I've never published my theories even though I've been a member of the American Institute of Physics. It's not my profession. 56 years later I'm enjoying watching physicists question everything they thought they knew wondering if they actually know anything at all. Powerful instruments reveal observed facts that contradict the basic assumptions of their best theories.

crhu319 That is a blatant fallacy. If Trump is elected then Putin will be gifted more Ukrainian territory as projected by Trump's claim that he will stop the war within 24 hours once he is president. It has been forecast that Poland will be Putin's next ext target. He - like Trump - is a madman who is quite prepared to use the threat of nuclear warfare to achieve his aims. The situation will get ugly very quickly because Europe will then be drawn into open conflict with Russia. NATO is the only deterrent to Putin's plan and Trump has already peddled his idea to pull out of that alliance. Putin has always been very clear that his ultimate goal is to rebuild the Soviet Union to its former 'glory'. Trump either doesn't understand this (due to his appalling knowledge of world history) or he simply doesn't care. I think the above scenario qualifies as WW3.

I have been looking for an explanation of the Trump phenomenon, Wolff’s explanation is pretty good : Americans do not want to come to terms with the obvious fact that the Empire is collapsing, there is an unconscious fear of the consequences on the horizon. By the way, Trump doesn’t drink. Even Wolf has Trump derangement

I am your sister from Yemen, and by Allah I only spoke out of hunger and distress. My mother, my brothers, and I lessons and tears. We are in a situation that only God knows about. God is sufficient for us, and He is the best disposer of affairs for those who brought us to this situation. By Allah Almighty, I did not write this appeal out of distress and distress. Poverty, O world, they have felt it So, I hope for you. By Allah Almighty, Lord of the Great Throne, he ate what I had in the house. By Allah, my brothers, he is my brothers by sitting in the house. Who has no food? By God, we are in a very difficult situation. We have 6 people entering the house, and my father has died, and there is no one who can depend on us and who lives in it.We live in a rented house because we cannot pay the rent we owe. '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' ''''''''''''' My brother, my first words are: I swear to God that I will not lie to you or deceive you. I am a Yemeni girl displaced from the war. My family and I live in a rented house in Al-Shahrab 15,000 Yemenis among us, and now we owe 45,000 for 3 months. The owner of the house is one of the people who does not have mercy, by God, my brother. He comes every day, insulting us, talking about us, and moving from the house to the street because we were unable to pay him the rent. The neighbors saw us crying and came back.They came back to talk to the neighbors and we were given the weekend. So we made him swear by God. He will take us out into the street. Have mercy on him and us. Our country is due to this war and we do not find food for our day, and my brothers and I live in a difficult life. Our father died, may God have mercy on him, and we have no one in this world who was with us in these harsh circumstances. My younger brothers went out into the street and saw...The neighbors eat and stand at their door in order to give them bread even if they break it. By God, to whom belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, they closed the door and expelled them and came back crying. They are dying of hunger. No one has mercy on them and a holiday is returned. I have made a living, and now if one of us helps us with a kilo of flour, I swear to God, I am dying of hunger. My brother, I am an alien to God. Then, I ask you to help me for the sake of God. I ask you, by God, to love goodness and to help me, even if you can, by messaging me on WhatsApp.On this number 00967717413452 and ask for the name of my card and send it and do not be late and may God reward you with all the best, my brothers Sagar, see how they are and help us and save us before they throw us out in the street, you will be lost or we will die of hunger. My family and I ask you, by God, if you are able to help us, do not be late and may God reward you well ،،،،......

The election of 1932 in Germany was not a Punch and Judy Show and neither is this one.
