This is why Richie was so great: taking his own country's national team and captain to task over a disgraceful bit of play. No punches pulled, no making excuses or "what aboutism". How many commentators or presenters would be so outspoken today? They just hum and haw and make excuses. RIP Benaud, your kind are too good for this sorry world.

Richie Benaud - a top bloke who managed to be both highly patriotic yet scrupulously fair. I grew up watching test match cricket in England from the 1970's and can honestly say that Richie was the greatest commentator - a true legend. There'll never be another like him. God bless you Richie wherever you are from a proud Englishman to a proud Aussie.

I think Richie Benaud is the best commentator ever,of any sport. He only ever spoke if things needed comment, the remainder of the time he said nothing. Completely unbiased and a gentleman. Others should listen and learn,I watch most sport with the sound off these days. Phil an Englishman.

Absolutely agree! As an Australian i worship this game. If you bring it into disgrace then you do not deserve to take the field. That's why this game is great. The game is bigger than anyone and you can only participate if you are worthy.

RIP to the great man, the king of the pause, the lord of 'letting it sit' and not bombarding your ears with useless noise, which made it even more ironic today when you saw people on TV talking over each other to get in their hot Richie Benaud take. Vale Richie, you will be missed more than you ever realised. The soundtrack to my summer is forever diminished.

An extraordinary and typically forthright statement from the late, great Richie Benaud. A man who exuded class in everything he did. On the field, off the field, on TV and in discussion. He excoriates Trevor Chappell in a way that reduces what that unsportsmanlike individual did to something utterly beneath contempt. And he does so without ranting, raging, raising his voice, or being anything other that supremely dignified. In a fraction over 40 seconds. How we miss you Mr Benaud!

Yep, it was a shocker and we've been trying to live it down ever since. To give our friends across the ditch credit they don't bring it up too often any more. It all came out in the end that Greg Chappell pretty well had a nervous breakdown on the field that day and when I saw him interviewed on it I finally felt really sorry for him. Every man has his limits and who can say with certainty what we might do if put under enough pressure-none of us really knows. But yes it was a shocker!

See, criticism coming from shock jocks who make a living out of pointing the finger and trying to be controversial for ratings and attention... tends to mean sweet fuck all. But having a very calm, chilled guy like Richie talking like this actually means something, you know some shit must've gone down, and if you were his target it would feel pretty bad I reckon.

Yeah, thanks for the embarrassment I feel even now every time I think of it Greg. I can't believe anyone could be dumb enough and unsporting enough to do it. It gave NZ and the rest of the cricket world a stick they can whack us with forever any time they feel inclined. Trevor should have refused to do it anyway of course so he doesn't escape his share of the blame in my view.

@IanGorton Totally agree (that's 100% of us). Very unlikely. I was responding to whambangthxmam from a while back if you scroll back a page. As an unrelated aside check cricinfo for Bradman scores a hundred in 3 overs. Admittedly 8 ball overs but for those who think 20-20 brought about fast scoring, think again

Whether intentionally or not, the ump effectively decided the match by adjudging Hadlee LBW to the second ball of that over, leaving the equation at 11 needed off 4. Neither the young Smith nor McKechnie had the big-match smarts, or the firepower on the MCG-size boundaries, to win the game, from that point, and Trevor's next 3 'regulation' balls proved exactly that. The underarm ball changed nothing, Aussie would have won no matter how Trevor bowled the final delivery. Greg made a fool of himself completely unnecessarily.
