OK…THAT was a great interview. I love how you asked thoughtful questions, but then also let Richie really expand on his answers. Any fans of Bon Jovi and/or Richie, if you haven't already, you must get his 1st solo album Stranger In This Town. Wall to wall fantastic. I don't throw "masterpiece" around lightly but it warrants it. Then go to his next albums, lots of gems in all of them. His voice is so rich, so powerful, and his songs are amazing. Would be nice if you could see past him and acknowledge those who don't think the sun shines out of his ass. Yes, he contributed much to the success of Bon Jovi, BUT, he was NOT the frontman of the band. If he wasn't happy with that dynamic he didn't have to be there for 30 years. I watched the new Bon Jovi doc, as well as this and a few other interviews with Richie. I think Richie is amenable to a reunion, but Jon seems a bit bitter about it. Through all the docuseries and the press interviews Jon has done, he comes across as a LOT more egotistical than I thought he was the 40 years I've been a fan. I'm still a HUGE fan, but in each episode and interview I see with Jon he just has this "I knew I was gonna be great, I was great, I'm still great" attitude. Maybe I read it wrong, it's all subjective. All that said, as great as Phil X is, I think Richie coming back in the next year or 2 for a record and tour would be a money-printing machine. Fingers crossed.

@@BayviewProperties-x4j Exactly - where's the huge headlining tour he probably thought he would have? He's a fantastic guitarist and harmony vocalist in Bon Jovi but like so many who think they're better than they actually are, he didn't quite hit. Jon also doesn't disparage him or his value to the band, whereas Richie seems to put Jon down whenever he gets an opportunity. While it would be great if he came back and they could be what they were (doubtful after so many years and the change in their music at their ages), I think Jon would be an idiot to take him back and believe that he was committed to his place in the band and let's face it, Jon is anything but an idiot. I think he regrets leaving and realises he needed the band. That the other band members still have a rift with him after all those years tells me that he was in the wrong with how he left and they resent it. No one knows what went on between them all but I think if he was going to return it should have been within a year or two. Kind of think that ship has sailed. Jon doesn't seem to want to say it's not going to happen, but Richie still seems to be at odds with everything and want to fuel animosity. I can't see a reunion working unless ALL of them put aside their differences and agree to start over and not bring up old crap.

Jon & Ritchie were the “Dynamic Duo” of Bon Jovi (like Jagger & Richards, Plant & Page, Tyler & Perry, etc). They sang well together & wrote excellent songs. They both got inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame together! The band Bon Jovi wouldn’t have been the same without the original players involved. It was upsetting when Ritchie left, but if you’re really not happy anymore, I guess you gotta leave. His daughter also needed her dad at the time. Ritchie wanted the freedom to do his own thing & be a “Bluesman” - like Stevie Ray Vaughn. He seemed happy playing in “RSO” (with Orianthi). I liked their music. I’ll give a listen to Ritchie’s album. I wish him the best. He seemed excited about creating/promoting the new songs. I hope he stays sober. It was good to see him smile. 😺

What my interpretation of what Richie said about John makes perfect sense ! You go up the scales throughout the years and well we all know reality sets in and we are not the spring chickens we once were , but anyways The whole Bon Jovi catalog went to heights that noone ever could have imagined and when your voice deteriorates over time and lets face it abuses the money maker ! John gave us 30+ years of solid vocals and more shows than will ever know . Richie was thinking about that and more about the brand instead of just kicking albums out there's a standard and when the standards get compromised by bad vocals I would have left too and respect that ! I got to see them in Indianapolis without Richie when they were promoting This House Is not for sale tour and it was awesome to be there but John's voice wasnt the greatest and lets face it if it wasnt for the backing vocals it would have been tough to watch live knowing what use to be and what reality in the moment differed ! I will always be a fan of Bon Jovi because for the ones of us who has had the privilege to have heard the catalog since the begining it was beautiful and still is . I hope John can get his voice back to atleast 80% of what it use to be and Ritchie and him can write one more great rock songs and bring the band back to full circle ! God bless the band and Ritchie and look forward to what tomorrow can bring ! Stay Classy Ritchie and John and the bands !

Great to get Richie's honest thoughts about the documentary because I was hugely disappointed and frankly pissed off that the whole thing turned into Jon's story and his vocal issues in particular. The classic line-up, the great songs they wrote, and how they toured the world are just side plots. The documentary starts with the current line-up and ends with the current line-up. That pretty much sums up that in Jon's opinion, Bon Jovi was never much more than his solo band.

I saw Bon Jovi at the Huntington Civic Center back in 1987 with Cinderella opening for them. Slippery When Wet was red hot. Wanted Dead or Alive was played seemingly every hour on MTV and if memory serves me correctly Bon Jovi was the king of the hair bands. I could be wrong on that but I also saw Whitesnake open for the Crue that same summer in that same venue so, one way or the other, I caught the best band in the land that summer. Man. Festival seating...look that one up because it's had to be illegal for decades now. Hundreds of girls being put over the top from a hundred yards away from the stage, semi-consciously crowd surfing due to being crushed among the masses or to their desire to party backstage with the bands. Couldn't hear anything quieter than a scream for 24-36 hours. Ah, the good old days. The only question, really, is which video was better...Wanted Dead or Alive OR Home Sweet Home???

All messed up in the head because of so many years of alcohol. This guy is no one without Bon Jovi, and proof is, no one knows a single song he did since, but Bon Jovi still had massive hits after him.

After watching the documentary, and now hearing this, I’m convinced John Shanks becoming Jon’s preferred collaborative partner was the main source of the rot for Richie. Him saying he wished he’d left a few albums before What About Now is telling.

Ya definitely agree. I thought it was pretty insulting for Jon to work with Shanks and not ask Richie for his opinion. I wholehearedly agree with you that is probably the biggest issue.

I don’t disagree but I think it was more a contributing factor imo. People quit jobs all the time. He was doing it for 30+ years and wanted out for whatever his reasons were. I’m sure he knew they would figure it out since they had guys like Shanks in the wings. He obviously looks back on the how and is regretful about that. Things happen. It will never erase his talent and the contributions he made to the band. I’ve always been a fan. ❤

Absolutely! You hit the nail on the head! Not only Shanks, but Obie O'Brian. Jon let them in and pushed Richie out. Jon always wanted to be Bruce and an E street band clone. Richie didn't have it. You can hear it on Bounce...less solos, less Richie on the songwriting dept. It became a slippery slope. Richie left and Jon became a bad version of Bruce. Imagine Mick without Keith. Chemistry is essential. For many, visuals are everything but for some the songs are key. Richie brought to the band the best songs...it's just an historical fact.

Jon would have never made it as a solo artist. Richie and Jon together made the band what it was. They fit hand in glove. The audience can see Jon tried to make the band about him. On all these talk boards about the group everyone applauds Richie much more.

It was Jon's band not Ritchie. JON STARTED THE BAND WITHOUT RITCHIE, THEN HIRED HIM. MUSIC IS A BUSINESS, REMEMBER THAT! JON WORKED HIS BUTT OFF TO GET RUNAWAY ON THE RADIO. ANYONE WHO RIPS ON JON DOESNT UNDERSTAND HOW HARD OF A WORKER HE IS.

My first concert was Bon Jovi opening for Ratt in Birmingham, AL 1985. I was right in front of Richie! He was amazing that night! Jon was awesome too, but he took lots of paper balls to the face. He stopped the show to say, "Hey! I am 23 years old just trying to make a living! So stop throwing stuff!" Later Steven Percy just threw it back to the crowd. Ha I caught a full roll of toilet paper he threw back. Ha Good times!

I FRIGGIN’ LOOOOVE RICHIE!!!!!! ❤️❤️❤️ I could honestly listen to him talk for DAYS!!! He knows his music history, he is SO FUNNY (the faces he can pull and the jokes he cracks..I was literally lsughing out loud!! ”Beyond Jovi”👍🏻😂😂), he is so down to earth and humble and really comes across as SO GENUINE and real! ❤️❤️❤️ He is just being himself and I LOVE THAT! Jon used to be like that too but at some point he started taking himself too seriously. And Richie has a point about the documentary…I can’t remember if it was in the documentary or in a recent interview where Jon said he never was a big drinker….making himself seem holier than thou and that sucked and was disappointing when we know that’s not true. He’s had his problems with alcohol too.. Anyways, Richie has been SO UNDERRATED for years. He is INSANELY talented, his songwriting is amazing, he has a voice that touches the soul each time he sings and his guitar playing gives you goose bumps! 😍 He really is a a TRUE, OLD-SCHOOL, REAL MUSICIAN with heart and soul! ❤️ Great musician, great person, great family man…just friggin’ LOVE him!!!! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ (Oh and he’s still a hottie too! 😍😬🥰)

I saw Bon Jovi open for Ratt back in '85 and I remember thinking before the show started that "hey, Bon Jovi are ok", but as the band played (Jon said "Its my 23rd Birthday Charlotte" he lied 😅) I was thinking that Richie was ALOT better than I thought, his guitar playing, stage presence and vocals were impressive. Ratt, as a whole, kicked ass, but Richie was the overall best performer/musician that night.

There may be bigger fans of Bon Jovi than me,.. but NOBODY on this planet loves those first 4 albums more than me. I was 10 when New Jersey came out. I just finished watching the doco and it really helped me to understand some things that have ALWAYS bugged me. When Richie said that Jon was trying to make the band a vehicle for himself while Richie was trying to make a BAND, that REALLY solidified the issue and helped me understand why Richie left. To me, Jon and Richie are each HALF of the band. I understand how Jon can think its the 'Jon Bon Jovi' show but the applause from the audience is directly built upon the songs CO-written by Richie. What makes me eternally sad is the utter removal of the HARD rock element of the band. Eliminating the distortion in the power chords completely evaporated my interest in the band. Keep The Faith broke my heart, and even tho its 100 years later i keep checking their new music just to see if its back. Spoiler Alert: Its Not. Anyway, great Interview - Great Questions, and your ability to let Richie speak at length without interruptions was overwhelmingly appreciated. P.S - 7800 Fahrenheit is a GREAT fucking album. and Let It Rock is the best song you guys ever did. Thank You For Your Service Richie. R.I.P Alec.
