For many of us who were teenagers in the 80s, Rick Astley is like that special relative we all have; we can laugh and poke fun at him amongst ourselves but we better not hear people outside our circle knocking him too hard or there will be problems. Meme, rick roll, and have a grand ole time but do it in good fun or Gen X is coming for you.

Indeed, he could be a modern version of late 50's early 60's V- neck singers ala Frankie Avalon, Bobby Vee, Brian Hyland....... But no autotuners allthough there are effects in his voice and No 1 in 25 countries. Not bad for a then 19 years old guy who is a soul band drummer turned into a lead vocalist. From the composer production team of Stock, Aitken & Waterman which also brought Kylie Minogue to attention, likewise Jason Donovan and Mel & Kim.

Classic 80‘s pop. Written by Stock/Aitken/Waterman who shelled out tons of hits that time. They all kinda sounded the same, because those guys didn‘t have a studio but took advantage of the latest technology and recorded the backing tracks with MIDI keyboards on PCs in their office. I heard the vocals usually were recorded in the backyard of the building. It was like an assembly line, rolling out one record a day. Other artists who were produced by SAW: Samantha Fox, Bananarama, Kylie Minogue.... So, you‘re right, the video looked cheap, because it was!

My freshman year of college (spring 2008), a kid in my "Great Theoretical Ideas in Computer Science" class hooked a laptop up to the PA system on April Fool's Day and set it up to play the song partway through the lecture... He had to keep running up and increasing the delay, as our prof was late that day. There was no better prank to a bunch of nerdy CompSci kids! (During Orientation Week first semester, the school legit gave us all these blinking LED glasses for Convocation. When the university acknowledged the new School of Computer Science class, we put on our glasses and they "took over" the PA system, blasting Sweet Dreams by Annie Lennox... Having us do the Robot to it. Not even joking. It was one big, blinking sign saying "Dorks here!!")
