Rick Danko performs a set in Japan, April 8th 1997 in tribute to Jerry Garcia. Dub from LaserDisc. I created this video with the KZitem Video Editor ( / editor )
its almost sad to see that .. Danko was clearly in the end of his journey by that time! Out of shape, drunk but still could hit those high note of it makes no difference ! Damn i wish the rock'nroller could separate the music from the booze and drug addiction cause it took too many of them including jerry garcia and rick danko .. Rip to both of them

Im a 20 year old musician. I wish so much to go back and just thank him and hug him. I appreciate his music so much. Very fond of his work in the band, and fond of his self titled rick danko solo album from like 77. Every song on the album is fantastic with people like ron wood and eric clapton sitting in to record his songs, thats how great rick was. That man will be missed.

It’s such a shame that Rick let himself go like this. He had such a wonderful voice great personality from what I’ve seen. I only wish I was alive to have met him. He was before my time but he’s one of the few I wish I could’ve met and maybe get to know. Rip I hope he has a special mission in heaven as well

I met Rick after a show once. Very nice man. The second time I saw him was a couple months before his death. I had an uneasy feeling that he wouldn’t be with us much longer. A beautiful talent that made a lot of people smile and feel better.

I always thought Robbie was really good looking and sexy. However, when Rick was younger there were something special about his personality and looks, like when he sings "It makes no difference" in The Last Waltz, such emotion, coupled with his looks back then, definitely my favorite.

PS: Jerry Garcia was the man who defused an ugly situation at The Festival Express 2-day rock fest in Toronto, in 1970. A pretty nasty group showed up demanding "free music for the people", and took to attacking the police - including injuring their horses. Jerry (who was playing with New Riders of the Purple Sage) went up on stage and said he and the band would play a free concert in a nearby park. There's a mention of this in the documentary. The musicians felt really awful for the police who weren't hurting anybody, just being on hand to make sure everything was OK.

That would be something to see! We ended up sleeping in that same park at night, as the Sat. show went so late, all the transit was closed down, and we wanted a good spot for Sunday's show (Janis Joplin, the Band, Ten Years After, etc.) My mom was having a fit (I was 15) but my sister, 21 was with me.

We just were not educated how to care for each other back then -it was more a personal journey , a lot of interloping enablers unfortunately ,the enabling scenario was built in as a performer in a bar with others wanting to have a good time . The period after the Last Waltz had to wear on him , the loss of the Band , the distance drug use causes amongst family and friends , Richard's suicide - financial woes - sensitive souls just ain't built for an insensitive world . I miss those four humans , glad Garth is still with us .

By May 1997, Mr. Danko would find himself in a Japanese court after a package posted to him was found to contain heroin. He served about three months (edit: some sites say 'no jail time', others say he did a little… ) in a Japanese jail for that. 'When they catch a scapegoat by the throat/ it's hard labour and cold beans…' I wish I could reach into the screen and warn him! Meanwhile, on the 1996 'High On The Hog' album, The Band's voices joined on 'Forever Young' in tribute to Mr. Garcia. I wonder if whether the whole band being with Mr. Danko on this 1997 Japan mini-tour might have helped keep him out of jail.
