Usually I would put my money on the P-bass, Riccy's often sound far too twangy and treble orientated for my liking. But this guy has really extracted a nice thick, rounded but balanced tone from the 4003, and I honestly like it more than the Fender!
@donarmando916

That's just how it should sound. This is just exactly the sound any Rickenbacker lover is after. Dificult to discribe. It's just unique for a Rickenbacker combined with an Ampeg Bass amp. It's about the same as a Gibson Les Paul combined with a Marshall amp. They are made for each other.

I've had my Ricky 4001since 1979, and still gig with now. It's a beautiful thing to play, but it MUST be driven hard with a pic to get the true Rickenbacker sound. I totally agree with GusFogle. It's by far the most original bass sound you can get. I have 'other' basses, but only the Ricky gets to come out and gig with me.

I keep coming back to this video. I had a 72 P Bass and an 88 4003 not too long ago. I also changed my amp recently to where I can use more gain in my sound. It's not hard to guess which one stayed. And for the record, I've had to adjust the Rick a whole helluva lot less than I EVER did with my P Bass. I've only had to adjust when I switched to a lower tension string set. I get the same aggressive sound with bigger low end, clearer top end, and cooler looks to boot. I carry it in a gig bag like the P bass was carried in, I've smacked it against mic stands, I've dropped it, it's fallen over, and I can never seem to get it in the car without bumping it. I don't get where this fragile shit started, presumably in the 60s and 70s when the 4001 was indeed a fragile instrument. They've been making them bombproof since the introduction of the 4003 in the 80s, and mine just keeps on giving. I'll probably replace it if the neck is snapped off in a way that can't be fixed, and if that day ever comes, it will be with another 4003.
