Beautiful POET, story teller and pianist! Gushing Talent ! That is missing today…anyone who followed her knows this is epic! I saw her in summer 1979 at Blossom… Ricki Lee Jones and Joni Mitchell will be remembered as legendary talents.

What kind of shit world do we live in where this goes unrecognized and so many rock critics are with a straight face telling people that Taylor Swift and Beyonce are writing deep and intelligent lyrics?
@focusedfreebird
8 жыл бұрын
yes when she hit the scene I couldn't believe the depth of her songwriting...her lyrics were not perfect rhyming stanzas ... the words and her execution of them were flying all over the place! it was almost as if the thoughts were going to jump off the record! it was scary and exciting at the same time...she was taking us on a little journey and drawing us into her world full of colorful characters and situations! it was almost like prose come to life in song...she will go down in history as one of the most unique original songstress of all time!

I remember when Joni Mitchell was trying to do this kind of stuff with 'Summer Lawns' and 'Hejira' ... it just did not work. Rickie was a natural at this. She made it look easy, and for her it probably was. Joni struggled and never got it right because she's basically a folk singer, not a jazz musician, and she tried to force it. 'Court and Spark' was the closest she would ever get. She desperately wanted to move away from folk, but it never happened. Still, she tried.

@@ardalla535 Your reply is very interesting. Rickie is often compared to Joni, but usually negatively. For all of Joni's griping, she's renowned, far more than Rickie, who deserves equal esteem. I think Hissing and Hejira are Joni's masterworks, along with For the Roses. But I think Pirates is the equal of them all. I think it's also the very last album of the genre of poetic singer songwriters.

@@ardalla535 Yes, Rickie is often compared to Joni Mitchell, but it's neither accurate nor fair. They sometimes look alike in photos--that's the extent of it, and that's entirely the shallow reason they are sometimes compared by critics who don't understand her music. They are nothing alike, except that both are great songwriters. There is NO ONE like Rickie Lee Jones. Her poetic imagery and the symbolism in much of her work is incomparable to anyone. She stands alone as a unique voice. And how lucky we are that she sings to us.

I remember back in the late 70s how Rickie would dance through the door of the Comeback Inn in Venice, Ca. She was pretty high sometimes..lol. and she'd take the stage of this tiny little jazz club and just blow everyone away. Then she got that hit Chuckies in Love and away she went!!! I've seen her twice in concert and it's always fantastic!

Have a couple of ex-dancer friends (I was a DJ) who have moved there and are trying to get me to move there. Seems the leather goods I made for one of them is a hit on FetLife and my products are in demand there since 50 Shades Of Grey came out. Living in an icebox at the moment. Might have to change direction soon, thanks for the info. I am sure she is hanging with Mac R.

Neil Cassidy sociopath saint who could keep a speaker from falling on someone by the power of his brain . He didn't really die on lonely Mexican railroad tracks . He chose to go into the Mexican jungle at night .Face his fears and atone for his sins . Big cat took him out .
