Rickson has the smoothest armbar and he can take the arm whenever he likes. You can't take anything away from a legend. He is the standard of great BJJ.

@totodiesel At the risk of coming across as a fanboy... Rickson, still at the age of 50 whatever taps todays world champions. Andre Galvao said Rickson tapped him and he couldn't tap Rickson recently. Saulo Ribeiro in the book he just put out Jiu Jitsu University said that Rickson tapped him, as well as everyone else in the gym the last time he trained with Rickson. Rickson is still on another level.

I dont know dude I have met and trained with Rickson before, I am a purple belt under him, his jiu jitsu was ALWAYS geared towards a REAL fight. So I think he would do just fine. Trust me man you would just have to train with the guy, I respect what your saying and I understand but you would have to be in the same room with him and see what it is he does. Keep training my man!

@totodiesel I don't see how they could possibly make money by saying that an old dude tapped them out but everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I have to say that comparing Rickson to Steven Seagal is ridiculous.

@Jimmynable I don't know about that but I have one of the matches that I plan to upload at some point. It's old black and white footage and I believe someone already has uploaded it to the net. Rigan was much larger than Rickson from what I remember.

@agentmma Ye fair point, I only said maybe could, not would. Ofc Rickson at his best would win, now tho with him being retired and I think Rigan still very dedicated to his training and I don't know how hard Rickson is training now so it could be a harder match for him.

@totodiesel Ah I see what u mean now. Ye I agree BJJ has come a long way since Rickson was in his prime. I think in the Gi tho where it pretty much comes down to pure technique he would pretty much beat anyone maybe some like Rigan Machado could beat him, without the gi I think guys in their physical prime who r constantly training full timewould be very hard matches for him and in MMA it would be even harder for him.

You mean the one where Anderson Silva threw just 60 strikes over 5 rounds and 40 of them were kicks to the shin and knee because he was terrified to engage?
@scarred10

you dont gain any timing if you dont spar,uchikomi becomes redundant once you have the tech down ,after that its just used a a warm up.Id feel like half a grappler if I didnt have judo and wrestling along with bjj,the oldtime bjj men actually did a lot of judo,much more than now.

@agentmma yap ... they "said" it. And Anderson Silva "said" that Steven Seagal teach him the front kick that KO'ed Belfort, and Lyoto Machida "said" the same about Randy Couture. Brazilian fighters "said" a lot of nice things about old master nobody has ever seen in a dangerous fight, but who need adverstisment. It's all about the money. They want to maximise what they can get of their dangerous job. If it implies to lie a little about Rickson or Seagal, some do it.

@Jimmynable yap ... u right ... i totally agree w/you ... just one guy in the comments says something like "oh rickson is a god look how he is good on this video". nope. against these guys even me would do the same. fact is it is really hard to know the real level of rickson compared to someone like jacare for example to stay in bjj in roughly the same weightclass

i trained at his school in the summer of 99 and 2000,when he was still active prior to rocksons death,fighting for self defense is very different to mma,hed be destroyed in the modern game,no pure grappler survives today,none.

I'm guessing you're one of those people that thinks that was a striking clinic. Learn a bit about striking, read the stats, watch the fight and notice how Anderson lands less punches than Clay Guida against Maynard, he just kicks at Maia's ankles and knees and runs. Because he was terrified.
@scarred10

you think it wasnt possible to show up at ricksons school in those days and sign up.Its almost every mma fighters and coaches opinion that no pure grappler could do anything in modern mma.The only almost pure grapplers that i can think of lately have been renzo,royce and rolls and we all saw how terrible they were in their recent matches.Royce is definitely the definitive grappler without any other skills,rickson was just a bette royce.

thats rare in bjj and ive trained widely in america,europe and the far east in bjj.Most would do a bit of uchikomi at most then newaza immediately.Maia is athletic compared to royce,who has 2 left feet

@joebeast15 Of course there is some truth in this. Rickson is super strong. Every man following Bjj and MMA agrees with that. But how much of a best is something we'll never know. Cause he has been the front of GJJ for so many years they cannot risk him to take a fight in which he wasnt 95% guarantee to win. We normal people would never know. IF YOU ARE Andre Galvao or Paulo Filho, you have the skill and the opportunity to jauge Rickson Level. Otherwise ...

that would be a very rare bjj school that spent half the class on their feet.Most are woefully poor at that aspect unless they wrestled/judo before that as i did(i began bjj in 1996 ).Royce could train forever and still be a useless striker.Maia does ok but has gone as far as he can,he is lightyrs better allround than royce ever was and athletic where royce wasnt,royce depended totally on bjj which was rorions intention.

i mean newaza when i say grappling,the gracies cannot wrestle.Hughes had ben defeated by GSP twice at that stage and was out of the picture for a title shot.Royce wouldnt even beat a good amateur mma fighter at todays level.Palhares has hit a wall in mma that hell never overcome because he cant strike(he can wrestle though)same with roger as great a grappler as he is.

seagal shouldnt even be mentioned in the same breadth as any fighter,never mind a legimate one like rickson.Im not impressed by ricksons vale tudo .mma record,its a joke,he is probably one of the best grapplers to ever live,ive trained with him in the late90s.To me roger and marcello are the only 2 grapplers in his league.

@agentmma Okay ... ridiculous ... so maybe you dont know that the principal reason the UFC exists is because Rorion looks for a way to explain the whole world that the GJJ was the best martial art in the world and so that everybody interested in becoming a good fighter should come in a GJJ school and pay 200$ a month. There are billions behind that idea. About Rickson, the fact is that the Gracie family sells Rickson as a demi-god, and this kind of story creates fanboys, and fanboys pay money.
@scarred10
11 жыл бұрын
they are pure grapplers within an mma framework,they cant wrestle or strike for shit so have no option other than pulling guard which we know isnt very effective in mma rules,did you see the dreadful show royce and renzo put up v a dwindling matt hughes.Palhares relies on physical power,aoki has a good takedown game yand roger is unproven at elite level .
@scarred10

none of those guys ever sparred mma with him,they grappled,2 entirely different things,rickson was totally 1 dimensional and would have had extreme trouble with strikers who had lots of experience with grapplers like bas did in pancrase
@totodiesel

@agentmma So the Gracies sell this Rickson story basically to make a lot of money. And you know what? That is the same with Steven Seagall. There are Aikido fanboys out there, when they hear what Anderson Silva said about their hero, they believe it, and the buy something more. You see know why it aint ridiculous to compare the two. When Galvao said something about Rickson, believe me, there are a lot of shotcallers out there linked to GJJ that may be able to make a little something for him.

He's fighting chumps there. You can bet they aint brazilian jj black belts. Mac Dojo Judo maybe. Chumps anyway. Nothing bad. They are in their own rights. But they are not the kind of opponents useful to decide the level of someone like Rickson.

royce has zero wrestling ability,zero striking ability,hed be smashed by any decent alrounder.Maia wont go any further due to his limited game but remember he has trained striking and wrestling for yrs now,royce never improved at al in those areas.
