It's hella stupid. Afaik the name Riddim comes from the track "Rhythm" by Jakes. Even though the influence has disappeared, Dub music (a Jamaican music genre) was extremely influential for early UK dubstep. So the stylization to "riddim" makes sense to me, changing the name to something completely unrelated just feels like erasing the genre's history and Jamaica's influence on electronic music. Sorry for bad English, ESL, etc.

Producers who are now passed away or not in the scene anymore so couldnt change their tags. its just not happening man. it will just be a handful of producers like infekt calling their stuff trench. 10 years from now the history books will still call it Riddim Dubstep with a possible footnote about how Infekt tried to change the name to Trench in 2020's

Seems to me like history is repeating itself. Those who were in the scene from the beginning and saw the rise of a new genre are seeing people become fans that weren't there from the beginning and are only interested in getting their faces melted by bass. The genre changes and strays away from its original founding elements until it becomes a mutant beast that is virtually unrecognizable to the ogs. This causes the ogs to do away with the genre and move on to new things. We saw it with how Dubstep morphed into Brostep (check out Timbah on Toast's video on the subject) and now we're seeing it with Riddim. With that said, someone let me know when they make the first Trench playlist.

Yeah so Getter and Infekt don’t represent any more what Riddim originally described, so of course they want to use a different name for their music. Plus initially, much like Dubstep, Riddim was a spin off of it that had a different sound as well, and since it all ties into UK sound system culture and how close to jamaican culture that whole thing is, the ORIGIN of the sound and its name is actually fitting. What people TURNED this genre's sound into, could pass a whole subgenre with a different name, yes. But who gave him authority over it to say "it doesn't fit" ? Like ok most new producers give 0 f*cks about a genre's origin, but this is like...who tf gave him authority over that ? lol
@alexanderkeffer2107

Yeah it’s true that Riddim is technically a sub genre of Jamaican music but I think that’s why the name was chosen for the specific genre of dubstep because it has that same slow down type of groove..with that being said…. Trench is aight, it definitely captures a big part of the vibe, but I don’t think it’s as fully encompassing as the word Riddim… but at the end of the day, I love this music no matter what people call it…
@victorheras5882

I think the criticism is that most riddim fans these days don't understand the origins of riddim dubstep or even dubstep in general so there grows a divide between people who love the bass, the rhythms (riddims), the culture, the history, and those who simply want their faces melted off.
@GeometryDashKenaz

Riddim isn't a subgenre of Jamaican music, it's literally just how most English speaking Caribbean people pronounce the word rhythm and is used to describe beats or instrumentals for ACTUAL genres like danchehall reggae and soca

@@GeometryDashKenaz Yes. You're right. I would compare the Reggae "Riddim" to the DnB "Roller". It's not a genre, it's a mindset. nothing wrong with a lil change, think there’s been a big confusion behind the roots of OG riddim tunes and new shit coming out, you hear people confusing tear out and main stream dub with OG tunes. when you hear riddim you think of a Jamaican accent of “rhythm”. when i think of reggae dub i think about early dub that eventually branched off into deep dub. riddim is kind of a laughing stock in some senses and genuinely confused with multiple genres. hard to switch up but i see where they’re coming from.

Artists are so weird. Too many artists that fans say "This dude makes this genre" and then the artist says "No I don't like that name that's cringe". Infekt doesn't like "Riddim". Rusko doesn't like the louder type of Dubstep he pioneered (Brostep). Zillakami and PRXJEK don't like the term "Trap Metal" even though they rap over trap beats with heavy metal guitars and screamed vocals. Glaive claims he doesn't make "Hyperpop" he just makes fast pop music. Like why do you hate the labels? You're getting upset over humans doing the most natural human thing: assign names and labels. Humans natural label and categorize so why the pushback?

People need to relax. Riddim is not gone, it's just under a different title. Just like how producers changed their names to MASTADON -> MARAUDA, or 5OHMAN -> KILL FEED, it's normal to change something in your carrier. The term Riddim has been over-used, and many genres/subgenres merged with Riddim, changing its original sound. If you disagree with INFEKT's or anyone's opinion on the subject matter, that's fine. However, there's no need to make a massive controversy over somebodies opinion that's ultimately harmless. I have been in this Riddim Community for eight years, and it would be fun to start a new chapter. I don't mind or care if we call it Riddim, Trench, or whatever. In the end, it's all Dubstep. As long as we stay together as a community, as a team, have fun, eat our fruits and veggies, and rock on.
