Sang this in my high schools vocal ensemble. I sang soprano 1 and never shied away from the top notes but at times felt self conscious because I was the high soprano in the group (still a high soprano and now well trained from taking voice lessons in college) I can almost sing like the soloist in the video especially near the end and when she sings “I’m gonna ride” hitting the higher notes.

Good performance !! This is frequently sung by many Japanese University Glee Clubs. I sang also as a member of Glee Club this June in Tokyo. One of my most favorite spirituals.

This arr. almost always goes flat, so that it ends up being a full whole step lower than it started.

A staple of Nazareth Academy’s Chorale. Sang this 25 years ago, it’s still performed.

Same here. It's actually not that bad when you get used to it. The director has changed it up a little bit, but not so much as to make it sound weird. This version is good, but this song was written by slaves before they were free, and they didn't pronounce the ends of the words as hard as they do in this, but other than that, it's a good song.

I see what you are saying, I think that this choir is over-pronouncing things a bit. They are kind-of saying get'tin instead of get'n. But idk im not an expert.

La solista canta esta pieza como una cantante lírica... en mi opinión queda horrible. The soloist soprano is singing this negro spiritual like a white opera lyricist singer. In my opinion, it's the wrong way to sing this kind of music. (excuse my language mistakes)

Out of curiosity, what problems did you have with her performance?
@capitnox
8 жыл бұрын
It seemed uninspired. It was lacking in depth. Her intonation was poor, very little dynamic inflections in some parts (esp in the 'I never can forget the day' part). In laymen terms, it was a hot mess.

The lead soprano wasn't the best. She's mezzo soprano and should be a higher octave
