Why would they remove his disability?! That's a crucial aspect of his character and the entire reason he is "the most imaginative boy in town" and part of why he concedes!
@slowdivingg
Жыл бұрын
the part where he concedes is actually part of the problem. its a harmful stereotype/trope of disabled people, the whole fact that he was mute in life but could talk and walk in the afterlife is also problematic. i dont think they shouldve "erased" his disability and shoulvde just worked with it. like he couldve signed and emoted while someone else sings and speaks (ie: there was a production of hunchback of notre dame whos quasimodo was deaf and nonverbal and had someone who sang for him. i also think the "most imaginitve boy in town" line feels ableist and infantilizing when its cause is supposed to be of neurodivergency considering he was not written by a disabled person and that is also a sterotype of neurodivergent people (specifically autism and adhd). so, thats my opinion, but sydneys vid is probably better at providing a pov from a disabled person.
@magsisdumb478

@haydenishomo I kind of get the part about him being imaginative because they specify that its not necessarily because he's disabled, it's because no one interacts with him because of his disability, pointing out a problem with the world as a whole and how they treat disabled people. And I did always feel weird about them just erasing his disability in the afterlife like that. I think part of the concession was that he was finally able to live in a world where people actually interacted with him, but it definitely would've sent a better message if they did anyway and treated him like a person rather than a charity case or a statue. The overall way I took it was a statement towards the world as a whole and how it ignores disabled people so much that and refuses to make any accomodations for them that it can often feel like escapism is the only way to feel like a person. I don't know if it was intended that way at all though and i can totally see the ableism in it, I'm also not disabled so I can't speak or make decisions on whether it is or not, just on how I perceived the story

Why was Ricky’s ability removed. I swear why do people get offended so easily. His disability CREATED his character, part of his character is the fact that he was isolated and couldn’t speak during his life. So when he finally gets the chance to speak, he’s going to speak about his…passions

I get why they’d give him a voice because this is a musical after all and it takes place in a sort of afterlife so it isn’t that far fetched, but they totally could’ve worked with him still having his crutches. @@weirdcakes304 sorry if that's the impression I gave :( no I wasn't offended, as ableist as it is, I think it makes sense they got rid of his disability in the afterlife. Ik some disabled people irl wouldn't trade their disability away simply because of the experiences they've gained through it. But in the afterlife, a disability does him no good. He no longer needs the experience that life life disability gave him. I've got depression if you consider that a disability, and ik I wouldn't wanna carry that with me to the afterlife. The only part of this entire bit that I really entertain is that having him keep the disability opens up roles to actors with disabilities which is great :)

What I don’t understand is why Ricky’s disability was removed in the first place, it adds so much more character development, it adds representation for those who have disabilities that are in theatre. The new script is legit going against the bachelor man Bible for being a jerk to those who have disabilities in theatre, and the character Ricky Potts himself.

I feel like ESU did decently with handling Ricky’s disability. While they did have Ricky be able to talk and not need his mobility aids in the afterlife (which maybe should change in future productions), from what I can tell they didn’t have Ricky give up his spot, and they removed a good amount of Ocean’s more ableist lines. In my opinion as an autistic person, Ocean was considerably more tolerable to me compared to the original production that was on KZitem. There’s still a line or two like the rubix cube one (because Ocean is a hypocrite about her values) but I didn’t feel the desire to have Ricky get a song where he calls out Ocean while watching ESU like I had felt watching the original one.
