Ride the Lightning is the perfect album because it has every element of Metallica that people love. Want Fast “classic” thrash? - Fight Fire With Fire. Want more progressive thrash? - Creeping Death. Want a real head banger? - For Whom the Bell Tolls. It’s got the ballad, it’s got the instrumental, it’s got it all.

Yeeeeeaaaah RTL my fav album on the world Edit: so those are my arguments: - 5 composers: Hetfield, Ulrich, Burton, Hammett, Mustaine - Call Of Ktulu - one of the most complex clean riffs of all time (and my fav one), and insane bass track - title track - the definition of metal IMO - Creeping Death - the coolest song to play live (Die! Die! Die!) - For Whom The Bell Tolls - amazing intro with cool sections, built-up before the drop - Fade To Black - besides being great composition with awesome riffs, solos and lyrics, it's one the most soulfull songs on the world - Trapped Under Ice - one of my fav vocal tracks of James, also a great riff in the middle of the song I could think of more but I'm too lazy to do it 😂

My humble opinion about every Metallica album: •Kill ‘Em All: Every song is amazing, bass tone is a bit weak, yet loud •Ride The Lightning: Almost flawless album, bass tone thicc af •Master Of Puppets: angry sound, still edible for newer fans, ROUGH bass tone •And Justice For All: The most aggresive over ever, cool bass lines even tho we can't hear them •Black Album: Heavy sound, but in average boring, THICC bass •Load/Reload: Crunchy and Heavy sound, it's ok if you understand the context of that era, the purest bass lines, but buried in the mix •St. Anger: Angry and Heavy sound, but still boring, underrated bass lines •Death Magnetic: Sounds as It was recorded in a trashcan (needs remastering), yet cool, AWESOME bass lines, but also buried in the mix •HTSD: an overall homage to their roots, perfect tone, bass audible, yet too technical Like so Andriy can read it :) Greetings from México frrrrriend :)

(I always thought that it and Dyers Eve are a two parts song, what is like a bonus). 2: If you want to consider the worst songs, Shortest Straw is as good as Escape or Leper Messiah, IMHO, what is great as hell. 3: There are a lot of badass 10/10 songs like One, the title track and Frayed Ends, and I really love progressive stuff (it's my opinion, not yours).
@ileanasantamaria2364
4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree with each of your points. To Live Is To Die may not be a Burton masterpiece like its predecessors, but it is sublime and deeply moving. And Justice for All is the one Metallica album I most enjoy listening to from start to finish, for all that people whinge about the songs being overly long, the flow from song to song, the aggression and angst and grief over Cliff make it a dramatic and musical masterpiece. The triumphant youths coming out with the brutal, bold and masterful statement that was Ride the Lightning, on top of the world and of their game with Master, emerge after Cliff's death wounded, pouring their fury and their brilliance into this one, furious, fearless battle cry of an album. I seldom associate colors or images with particular sounds, but listening to AJFA I always feel wrapped in a beautiful, somber black shroud. It also evokes images of steel against a pitch black backdrop. All that said, Creeping Death is a perfect song, and others on RTL also command my love and respect. AJFA remains, for me, the quintessential album, start to finish, compared to which the other two great Metallica albums of the eighties strike me as excellent collections of mostly brilliant songs. Unlike MOP and RTL, each of which contain songs I sometimes skip (Escape, Trapped Under Ice, The Thing That Should Not Be), And Justice For All doesn't have a weak song on it.

I mean just that ALONE is a stellar line up of songs all in a row I mean the entire album you could literally play all the way through without skipping a track now I can't say the same thing for "Ride The Lightning" I would usually always skip over "Trapped Under Ice" (Which I recently grew to appreciate much more now) and "Escape" which I still to this day skip on my c.d. their most complete album is justice by a long shot. the boys were fired up, angry, and looking for answers. i totally agree RtL is where they found their sound, MoP is where they polished it. RtL will forever be my favorite metallica album

RTL has always been my favorite, followed by Justice/Master tie and Kill 'em All/Black Album tie (Metallica is too good to rank their albums anyway). Completely agreed on the bass tone differences between the albums. On Kill it sounded quite scooped and trebly (thanks to Cliff' s modified Rick), while on Master it was a bit too muddy. The overdrive sounded great on RTL.

On the early album James’s vocals sounds like a young kid. As he aged, in my opinion, they lost a little something. The more recent albums sound like a dad not a young rebel.

Ride the Lightning is my second favorite Metallica album. I think Master of Puppets will always hold the top spot for me. I think it's just incrementally better than RTL in almost every way. Yes, it completely apes its predecessor's formula, but song for song, it is just a bit better. Plus James's voice never sounded more menacing than on MOP.

Kinda late but another point is how diverse their lyrics are in this album: *Fight Fire with Fire* : it's about nuclear warfare and how it would end the world *Ride the Lightning* : a 1st person view on dying by execution, similar to Hallowed be thy name in a way *For Whom the Bell Tolls* : it's a critique to war in general but set in the spanish civil war (and it's fucking poetry in a way I have never seen in a music before) *Fade to Black* : it's about losing everything and asking yourself if it's worth moving on, based on james losing all his band equipament that his mom helped to pay *Trapped Under Ice* : it's about being trapped on an avalanche, quite self-explanatory but it's a terrifyng subject if you think about it *Escape* : it's a bout being free in general, based on james being raised in a strong catholic family *Creeping Death* : it's about the 10 plagues of egypt (I didn't expect to find a subject like this in a thrash metal music, but it's fucking amazing) *The Call of Ktulu* : ok this doesn't have lyrics but it's about ktulu, based on them being 70's and 80's kids, so they were into Lovecraft stuff

Cliff Burton is one of the greatest bass players of all time. He was so talented and his stage presence was amazing. He was magic. Ride the lightning is one of the greatest albums ever. I love how Kill Em All was supposed to be called Metal up your Arse but the record company didn’t like it. I remember we came third in a battle of the bands and they asked me to say something when they gave us a trophy and I just yelled out Metal up your Arse 😝 the best thing was in a crowd of a few hundred people just 4 guys cheered and they knew what that meant the rest of the crowd just looked confused I live Australia and this was in a small country city. Great times I miss playing live this year the first time I’ve never been on stage playing live. Sadly our music industry will take years to return if it will at all.

I started listen to Metallica when I was 11, cause my family is a very religious one and never let me hear "worldly music" when I was little. I meet the band through MTV with The Day that Never Comes and fell in love with the music, composition and crazy as it sounds, the duration. I started to hear all of they work and realized that Ride the Lightning album is in fact, the best! And also, I always make a comparison between RDT and MOP. How? Well, I believe that MOP it's a copy of RDL but with more experience or mastery of the band. Fight Fire with Fire - Battery Ride the Lightning - Disposable Heroes For Whom the Bell Tolls - Lepper Messiah Fade to Black - Welcome Home (Sanitarium) Trapped Under Ice - Damage Inc. (Man! Those songs are fast) Escape - The Thing that Should Not Be Creeping Death - Master of Puppets (They wanted a song for playing with the crowd as seeing in Creeping Death with the "Die! Die!" part. That's why they added the classic "Master, Master") The Call of Ktulu - Orion Both of the albums are Masterpieces! But, thanks to Ride the Lightning, Master of Puppets exist!

Given the themes behind Escape, all I'd add is that it might be a preview of Dyers Eve. Not in the sound and all, but the kind of message that James tried to push in his lyrics: which is just how much he hates people busting his balls and controlling his life. I think that resonates with most fans of Metal I know. But the thing with the whole album is just how easy it is to headbang or at least groove to almost everything. Trapped Under Ice is honestly underrated. It's kind of the Whiplash of RTL. Just a short thrash song to get people riled up again after a bittersweet ballad.

Feel like we should also credit Trapped Under Ice for being one of Metallica's most agressive song ever, drum-wise. Everyone is in ecstasy regarding Dyers Eve's double bass, but Trapped has constant fast, thrash double bass during almost the entire track (except middle section). It's quite a performance, especially for Lars.

The drum tracks are multiple cuts spliced together, with terrible miking and processing, and a bad snare sound. Gene Hoglan or Dave Lombardo could do the drum tracks in 1 or 2 takes.

Why: Thrashers: Fight Fire With Fire, Trapped Under Ice Chugging: Ride The Lightning, For WHom The Bell Tolls, Escape Speed: Creeping Death Ballads: Fade To Black Instrumentals: Call Of Ktulu That's the variety. Might be the heaviest Metallica album aside from Fade To Black and Call Of Ktulu. Fade To Black has lots of vibes from Black Sabbath riffs.

Honestly, I cannot decide whether RTL or MOP is the best Metallica Album. Anyway, here my comments: Trapped under ice: the second Kirk’s solo after the 1st verse of the song is the best section of a Kirk solo. You can listen to it only in this album, the way he created and played that solo, not even in AJFA I have heard of a solo playing like the Trapped under ice. Call of Ktulu: the distortioned parts of Cliff are the fucking cooolest ever! None bassit have done something like this in a song, except for Cliff. The Kirk Solo in this song is one of the best, it is one of the best contribution to this album, and the clean intro is epic, weird, unusuall, everything. FWTBellTolls: raise your hand if you though once a time that the intro was played by James or Kirk...... FFWFire: at that moment, the best first song to start an album, the most thrashy song, the fastest, more complex, Lars’s double bassdrum after the solo (fucking coool), Guitar harmonies between James and Kirk. I mean, all 4 members contributed to make this album the best of their career.
