I wanted to give some context to this video. The guy in the back (Eric) I had not formally met before. That day, he was riding with the guy who's following me. I have ridden with him before, and he's a good rider. I was not aware of what the other guys level of experience or inexperience was fully. I knew he was riding at a slower pace coming over the mountain, so we were taking it easy going back.
In hindsight knowing what I know now about this rider, I would have had him either right behind me, or in front of me.
He got into the gravel on the right side of the road and lost the front and went down. I felt terrible but was thankful it was a pretty gentle crash as crashes go....there was a little damage mostly cosmetic on the bike, and he was able to ride it home.
I always recommend the book "Sport Riding Techniques" by Nick Ienatsch to newer riders, which I did in this case as well after the dust settled. I will also do some one on one riding with him if he wants, and try to help him with pointers good habits like using his eyes properly. I suspect this was a bit of target fixation.
The intent is never to cause anyone harm while riding. I will do better with communicating with riders I do not know if they are riding with me at all. Thankful that Eric was ok!
