That's funny about Jerry Scheff having difficulty with that line because he's an amazing player. It's really not that complicated; it's just not a typical bass guitar line. Great video btw. I'm a long time bassist who's been learning keyboards lately. Of all the many, many videos I've watched, this is one of the better ones I've seen. Firstly a massive thank you for making this tutorial. I'm in my mid 60's and have played around with keyboards and synths for many years but a couple of years ago we put a band together and as keyboardist I didn't really know what I should be playing and when. This and other of your tutorials have shown me how to integrate my limited skills in with the rest of the band. Loved the line "you're either comping or soloing" beautifully succinct. Thanks again. I love your tutorials! Especially this one. Your treatment was perfect for the audience. I'm going to point out a few subtleties you might enjoy. First, it's a really easy bass pattern, very easy finger positions, but going the opposite way on the Em and A takes a little getting used to. Second, on the D/A at the end of the upward triad climb, the bass slides up to the B even though the chord really is D/A just as you said. I play B G A on bass (B and G syncopated, A on 4), and it took me forever to get my two hands to work together on it. Next, in verse 2, I'm pretty sure that Ray omits the F# from the F#m triad (just playing two notes, C# and A.) Try it! You'll see that it leaves it more open. Ray's playing is full of these little variances from the standard approach, to great effect. BTW, that's easier to make work with a sustain pedal that doesn't sustain the bass. Meanwhile, I picked up a few things from your tutorial to improve my rendition, so THANKS! For me, covering Ray's leads, the hardest part isn't the notes & shapes, which are pretty straightforward. He just has a much deeper rhythmic toolkit than I do. You have that covered in spades. I really like the way you can sound like Ray without duplicating his licks.

@@UniverseofKeys thank you for the tutorial. Which properly isn't a tutorial rather more an inspiracion how to improvise on your own on e pentatonic and a major a scale. You need get the left progression stable and you can sumerge in Doors World 😁

Thats awesome and thanks!! Given you love this song so much I hope you've seen the live in Paris 2001 version on YT? Ray is definitely doing some funky stuff there but yeah everything you teach here is the foundation so that I can go explore. Thanks again.

Thanks bro so much! Can you do a breakdown of Ray Manzerak's "Ships with Sails"? I know this song isn't well-known, but can you do it anyway? Lol. It's one of my favorites and I have no idea how to play it. Thank you and God bless.

Solid video. I noticed you talk with your hands a lot, and it made me think about my friend who always looks down at my hands and analyzes them - even when I use my hands in close proximity. Haha! I found this funny, so I now notice other people talking with their hands. Some interview linked talking with hands to a minor element of autism, which may be true in some people. Not inclined to say it's present here, but I think your hands helped give emphasis on what you were talking about. I suggest watching your own video and seeing what you do - out of fun. Anyway, bye!
