Anyone who has only known "normal" cycling will be amazed at how difficult it actually is to ride a recumbent. You practically have to relearn how to ride a bike.
Because with it just keeping your balance seems to be a little more difficult than you are used to. But it's worth learning because riding a recumbent bike is so much more comfortable and relaxing. Since there are many different types of recumbent bikes, the type-specific difficulties that the beginner has to deal with also differ. Here the driving problems will be shown and explained using the example of a lowrider, because it offers a particularly large number of new challenges for cyclists.
It is particularly difficult for beginners to start off on an incline, or simply to get up steeper passages without staggering or even falling over with the bike if you are too slow or in too high a gear. But never fear tumbling and falling with a lowrider, at the beginning it is part of the learning process and it is not so bad as to to fall with an upright bike. On a lowrider you don't fall from so high above down on to the tarmac. Therefore you get off lightly when you fall with a lowrider compared to an upright bike. And you don't ride head first like you do on a race bike, that reduces the risk of severe injuries on a recumbent bike significantly.
Also cornering can be difficult when - due to the design of a lowrider - the steering angle is limited by the chain and the rider's pedaling feet.
Starting and having to drive through a tight corner immediatly afterwards - for example at a traffic light - could be a problem for a beginner too.
And who never has experienced cranking through a fast driven corner almost lying, legs forward on a recumbent bike with its deep center of gravity will be surprised how it feels to almost touching the tarmac with one's elbow.
Even pushing and manoeuvering is more challenging with a recumbent compared to a `normal´ bike. Dependent on the design the steering angle is so much limited by the chain and the pedals that your chain comes off the sprocket easily if you try to pull the bike backwards and turn the steering a bit.
The spectator of this video will notice that a recumbent bike is not suitable for every intended use. But I can say from my own experience that it is great fun to face up to the specialties of this bicycle category and - after some practice - you enjoy the extraordinary advantages of a recumbent bike.
