Come along as we travel 55 miles into the heart of the Adirondacks behind ADIX 2400, an ALCO C424 built in 1964 for the Green Bay & Western. After we reached the end of the line in Tupper Lake, the crew picket up a large crowd of passengers, and took them to Sabattis station which is twenty miles south of Tupper Lake. It was a historical day due to the fact that a train has not brought passengers to Sabattis since the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, when the Adirondack Railway (a different company from the current one) was established to service the line for the Olympics. Unfortunately, the Adirondack Railway did not last long, as the state shut it down in 1981. According to the Adirondack Railroad, “Coincidentally, it was 131 years ago to the day that the Northern Division of the M&MRy opened for regular passenger train service between Malone and the Tupper Lake Depot. Now the Adirondack Railroad, in a similar way, had the inaugural running of passenger train service in Tupper Lake again. Also, for all the history buffs, July 16, 1892 was the day M&MRy began running trains in the section between Herkimer and Thendara, which at the time was known as Fulton Chain”. The “M&MRy” are the initials for the Mohawk & Malone Railway
After passengers detrained at Tupper Lake, the train returned to Thendara, ending the long journey along the Grand Adirondack Line for the day. In total, the train traveled approximately 166 miles. Videos taken on July 16th, 2023. Enjoy!
