Join us for the sixth episode of our 15 day self-guided motorcycle tour of British Columbia, Alberta and the Canadian Rocky Mountains. In this episode, we're riding from Lake Louise to Jasper along the iconic Columbia Icefields Parkway.
We woke this morning to dry roads and high hopes for some sunshine today as we were riding one of the most scenic roads not only in Canada but in the world. It had rained almost continuously for three days with temperatures dipping as low as 2 degrees centigrade. We fuelled the bikes for our 150 mile ride to Jasper especially as we'd heard that there was only one gas station along the route and it had the most expensive petrol in Canada.
We bought new park passes and set off along this amazing road. It wasn't long before we had to pull over to take some photographs... the scenery was simply outstanding. Not only that, we had blue skies and sunshine.
Our first stop was a Peyto Lake, a stunning turquoise lake set in a very scenic valley. The 1 km hike up to the lake was quite a challenge as the path was quite steep and covered in a blanket of yesterday's snow. It was worth every moment.
Back on the road we headed toward the Columbia Icefields Discovery Centre where we planned to stop and take a tour of the Athabasca Glacier. Sadly, the weather took a turn for the worse and as we reached the summit of Big Bend, we needed to stop and put our waterproofs back on. It was snowing. We made it to the Discovery Centre, bought our tour tickets and sat watching the snow fall as we waited for our tour to start.
We boarded our vehicle and headed to the glacier and oddly enough, the snow stopped falling, the mists cleared and we got to walk on the glacier under blue skies and warm sunshine. It was pretty amazing! As part of our tour package we also got to walk the Columbia Icefields Skywalk, a glass platform suspened 918 feet above the valley floor. The scenery was simply breathtaking.
All too soon, we were back on the bikes for our last 100 km to Jasper. The sun was shining, the skies were blue and the mountains and countryside were amazingly beautiful, even more so because of all the fresh snow that had fallen over the last couple of days. Better yet, we had the road almost to ourselves. We reached Jasper just in time to head out for a burger and beer.
In our next episode we have a rest day so am more leisurely ride to visit a couple of very scenic lakes. We still managed to get lost though!
Don't miss it.
