I literally love Ridley Scott when he talks about films. He’s so in love with making them he’s confident of his ability but never arrogant and I feel just tells you very simply about the small levels of trickery that make up a full length motion picture.

The stunning beauty of the visuals in this movie tended to make you involuntarily gasp - which the quiet pacing of the film greatly enhanced, like an actor raising an eyebrow in a Bergman closeup: and this slower pacing, like the bellows on the Voight-Kampff machine, allowed the viewer to breathe in the full implications of the dystopia, rather than those deeper dystopian aspects getting lost in the quick, shallow breathing, of yet another cool, Sci-Fi action sequence. The level of skill in the team as a whole, required to pull this off, ( actors, DP, lighting, direction, special effects, music, writers, etc ), was extremely high, since the spell could so easily have been broken, in any number of places - it's a subtle testament to the talent of all those involved, that despite all these moving parts working together in a system of such very, very tight tolerances, that the magic still happened: and boy, did it ever.

While "Blade Runner" is my favorite film, and I worship Ridley, and I do think the eye effect is genius and beautiful and even narratively symbolic... it just seems silly to me that they use it at all. The story goes to great pains to present this paranoid world in which it is *nearly impossible* to differentiate between human and replicant - to the point where we see they need to set up special Voight-Kampff machines and ask 20-30 questions to analyze someone's micro-ocular reactions to verify organic identity. So wtf would they need to, if they could just dim the lights of any room and see if your eyes reflect like a cat??

As cool as it is visually, it’s still a narrative cheat, in my opinion. Even Ridley has conceded that part of the greatness of “Blade Runner” - as is part of the wonder of life - is the ambiguous nature of it; never knowing the truth about things such as what we are, what our purpose is, where we are going, etc. Which is why elements such as the eye effect and the unicorn dream go too far in this story. They kill the fun discussion. They spoonfeed the audience with “solid proof” that Deckard is indeed a replicant. I just don’t like that. Let us make up our own minds, Ridley. Subtle elements like Deckard’s photos of ancestors he never met, as well as Gaff’s dialogue at the end, small stuff like that is enough to render suspicion. No need to hit viewers over the head by giving only your replicants special creepy cat eyes.

The Problem with his newer movies never was the directing or the production quality. Ridley Scott still is one of the most impressive highbudget directors there is. The problems in the movies since Prometheus all come from the stories. From the characters. The logical flaws. Kevin Johnson mentioned The Martian, above. Again - brilliant movie but someone very talented wrote the story. I also think (at this point still hope) that Denis Villeneuve is the right director for the movie. He makes brilliant movies as well. Just with a much different handwriting. Still the highest hope I have is that the story holds up. If the story is good either of the two directors could produce a masterpiece, IMO.

Literraly falling of my chair here.. Always made me mad, to read those type of things. I mean, I agree Villeneuve is a great director, I love him and he certainly will make a great sequel. How could you talk as if you know Alien better than his own creator.. Waw..
@megahurtz30

He "created" Alien, as much as any other movie he directed. It was Dan O'Bannon and Ronald Shusett who wrote the story and screenplay for Alien. Which was what YouTubsel was basically saying... The problem is that there aren't very good stories and writers around apparently. To me, even The Martian sort of sucked. It was supposed to be rather scientifically correct, but as usual, the martian atmosphere is always depicted in a ridiculous way.

I read the book, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, and I wish they had done the scene where Decker tries out an antiquated version of VoitKompf to "know" if he really is human. It is a great scene with serious implications, because there is a whole station of cops, all of who were Replicants.

I always mentally compared that set to Princess Lili entering the hall of pillars in Legend, right before she meets Darkness.
