He actually learned the guitar parts that were written by Todd Huth, Primus' first guitarist (who has a KZitem channel btw), then he put his own spin on it and took it sideways from there on later albums.

This guy is so much like Alex Lifeson of Rush: Humble, underrated, inventive, and such a big part of filling the empty space between two beautifully obnoxious rhythmic players. I love how his style sounds so broken but it fits perfectly in the Primus pocket.

Really wasn't expecting him to play a Possessed song. For a long time, he seemed to keep his involvement with them kinda quiet for some reason. Really cool to see him play this. Seven Churches is such an important record.

This is one of, if not the best, guitar instructional videos to textured playing I have ever seen. Larry demonstrates his style superbly, and with modesty, candor, good humor and superb clarity. I feel like I'm sitting there with him. Hats off, man.

When Frizzle Fry came out my friends and I lost our minds. We got to see Primus for the first time at the Columbus Newport, opening for fishbone. What a show, what an era in music. My bass player Josh(RIP), instantly got deeply into Claypool, which meant I needed to adopt the same vibe. Ler was a huge inspiration on my playing in the early 90s in my band. And influenced a lot of the original music I wrote with Josh.

Great story thanks for sharing I lived in the Bay Area from 91 to 95 I saw primus open for the mighty Rush Great show. Primus played Kashmir, les was on the bowed, upright! Rush (roll the bones tour) was unbelievable as usual

What the F@#$. Larry is a madman! His playing is pure unhinged insanity, somehow both wildly atonal and beautifully melodic. I'd love to see the guitar through his mind for a day. This video is incredible!! I never, ever thought I'd see the day where I might actually understand what's going on in The Heckler.

I’ve always wanted a guitar lesson from Ler LaLonde and now my dream has been answered. Never before have I laughed so much during a guitar lesson, I love his unique style, humour and humility. What makes this even better is that recently I’ve been stuck in a rut with my playing and this video has helped me on a path to get out of said ‘rut’.

..this was worth every minute just to see him play the South Park Riff! Killer Green Flying V. Definitely one of the most entertaining Riff Lord Episodes yet...why can't all Guitar lessons be this great. Larry's creative and unconventional approach to guitar goes to show you that there is no limits to what you can do. Go Gibson and Go for it!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR HAVING LER ON RIFF LORDS! This is epic and pure solid gold! He is one of the best unsung heroes that doesn't (generally) get the recognition he deserves. The majority of his music is quite difficult to figure out by ear because it is so original and abstract, so thank you Gibson and Larry for putting this out there! What a legend. Mad respect and hope to see more!!

I've always admired Ler's playing and considered it so unique and off kilter right along with Les' bass. I love getting to hear him talk about his playing and get glimpse of who he is. His style has always been a bit mysterious to me and this feels a bit like pulling the curtains back to reveal the wizard. I'm conflicted about it, honestly. Ha Ha... He's one of the greatest guitar players out there IMHO often over shadowed because his sounds is discordant and he's in a band with Les... God! I am in awe of you, Mr. Lalonde. I can't tell you how blown away I was when I pieced it together that you were also in Possessed... 🤯🤯🤯

So wish Larry was still with Possessed🤘🏻. I remember buying that album when it first dropped. Monumental in the world of metal. Even though Larry seems to distance himself from it for some odd reason. Then I remember getting the Primus album and seeing Larry on the back. I was like “surely this is a different Larry Lalonde?!”. But then I was thinking, “ well, not exactly a common name?”🤣. I remember telling my girlfriend about Larry being in a band called Possessed, and being excited about it. She just looked at me like I was an idiot. 😂 Nobody understood. He’s a killer guitar player no matter how you slice it. But if Possessed would have stuck it out, I’m sure they would’ve had “Slayer” level of success. Amazing Larry is with Gibson. A really unique player. 🤘🏻 Update: wow! He played Possessed 👍🏻 totally badass 🤘🏻. Come on home Ler!!

Ler is criminally underrated. He invented death metal with Possessed, then joined Primus, who were influential on nu metal, funk rock, and experimental rock. Not to mention, he had a different, innovative playing style for each band

Haha I could watch Larry play all day. Cool seeing him play Exorcist remember hearing that album for the first time blew me away as a teenager. Creative guitar at it finiest. Gibson need to come out with these one per month.

I love Ler's sense of humour, and Primus's in general. So much of the music in the 1990s was either dour grunge/industrial or sappy jangly pop rock. Primus was an island of levity in all that, while still rocking hard.

This makes me appreciate Primus even more. I always noticed how strange the guitar stuff was, as in it broke the conventions of guitar as a lead and instead made guitar the support of the bass...of course. But hearing it on its own I see just how crazy it all is. The bass is crazy, the vocals are crazy and the guitar is crazy....but it works!!!

Use to see Primus every weekend at the Omni nightclub in Oakland/Beserkley in the early 90's. They were kind of the house band there(Too many Puppies!!)

LOVE LER! He's always reminded me of a bizarro (this is a term of endearment) Bob Weir. Both play in such unique spaces around/complementing their lead band members, humbly. Also, what a fun/funny guy he is!

Todd Huth cannot be a forgotten piece of the equation for some of the earliest Primus songs Ler does mimic and use a decent amount of what he did. But make no mistake Ler is a fucking beast and uniquely minded likely one of the few people that was even capable of replacing Todd Huth in terms of creativity and approach to a pretty well defined instrument.

I finally know why KZitem was created! I was just asking Josh of Primus Tracks a few weeks ago why these guys don’t teach lessons. I knew Ler could read my mind. It’s why his music satisfies my soul so perfectly.
