When I was 17 I was in a stage production that was having one more run-through before the evening's outdoor event in one of our town's parks. My parents dropped me at the director's house, and drove off to get ready to attend. But at the house I found it vacant. The entire cast had already gone on to the venue, and somehow no one had not notified me of this change. This was decades before cell phones, let alone at a time the internet being in its infancy. As I was literally in my outfit for the production, I had nothing in my pockets (and not many pay phones to be had in the suburban neighbourhood, even with which to call collect). Fortunately I knew the location of the nearby police station, and was able to get there, only to find a fat desk-sergeant, who clearly was _not_ youth-friendly. I conveyed my situation as politely as possible, to which she barked, "What d' y' want _me_ to do about it?" I was taken aback. I literally said, "I was always told that if one was in trouble to find a police officer." "Well who told you _that_ cock and bull story...?" she retorted. I still-politely asked if she would call my parents so that I could be retrieved. She pretended to dial, and I use the term with precision, as she _claimed_ there was no answer, and she refused to dial again. Later my parents would confirm they _were_ still home at that time, and the phone never rang. (As it was, when my parents arrived at the venue, and cast members saw my folks, they were all, "Where's Geoffrey?" My equally perplexed parents told them that they'd dropped them at the director's place for the last run through an hour or so earlier; a couple of cast members rushed back to get me, as I returned it to the director's house, figuring at _some_ point someone was going to _have_ to miss me...) 😉 Meanwhile, understandably, my trust in the concept of "friendly neighbourhood police" took a serious [lifelong] nosedive.

Can you feel life movin' through your mind? Ooh, looks like it came back for more, yeah! Can you feel time slippin' down your spine? Ooh, you try and try to ignore, yeah! But you can hardly swallow Your fears and pain When you can't help but follow It puts you right back where you came Live and learn! Hanging on the edge of tomorrow Live and learn! From the works of yesterday Live and learn! If you beg or if you borrow Live and learn! You may never find your way
