I have been deer hunting in SE USA for 45+ years. Most of those years were with my .280 BAR and 6-7 years ago transitioned to .280AI. 7mm-08 is my “go to” in hunting whitetails in Georgia. I hand load 140 Accubonds and 90% of my harvest is between 100-350 yds and they are DRT! Low recoil, hits hard, and very efficient. I love that cartridge!

Just a point of view, elk are harder to kill than moose. I've been all in on the 7mm-08 since 1999. Personally can vouch for its effectiveness on moose. Several times over. Am I biased? Dam right I am, it works plain and simple.

@@hopefulballistics I like the 30-30 and 308 for whitetails here in NC. Mainly because they perform well in compact rifles for hunting in the woods and from a tree stand. I have a 7x57 I like a lot so I figure a 7-08 would be about perfect for anything east of the Mississippi.

I believe the 7mm-08 would be an excellent rifle to buy. I have a love of the 7x57 and now own 2 custom made rifles. One 22 inch barrel and one 24 inch barrel. The last one I had made was just removing the barrel of a Ruger M77/270 and installing a Shilen barrel with a 1 in nine twist. Since it was a brand new barrel there is no caliber stamp on it I had it stamped .275 Rigby and even bought some .275 brass. The two largest elk I ever harvested were both with my older 7x57 both with 140 grain bullets. Roughly 2850 fps. No one would go wrong buying a 7mm-08 for any hunting in the lower 48.

Yea I like it!! The 7mm-08 is at it's best running 120-140 gr bullets. The heavies really crowd the powder capacity of the small case. Gotta remember that the cartridge has a overall length of 2.800". Yes you can modify it but if we're talking a stock gun it's 2.800" if you want the rounds to feed in the magazine. It's a great performer and I've personally taken large mule deer out to 500 yards with this cartridge. DRT!! I always tell guys if you want more, at the expense of recoil, shorter barrel life, less rounds in the box, heavier rifle, then by all means buy a bigger gun that you probably won't be able to shoot as well. Simply put, I've never had a deer or elk complain after death that he just wasn't hit quite hard enough. This cartridge is fully capable of taking ANY and all North American big game, point, blank, period...

I'm from up in Canada. I use the 7mm-08 for: Coyotes, Mule deer, Elk, Moose, Black bears, Caribou and Pronghorn. I use 140 (139?) grain Hornady gmx/cx bullets for hunting game animals that I eat, 139 grain SSTs for Coyotes, Wolves etc... 7mm-08 with a monolithic bullet is more than enough for moose and bear at reasonable ranges...

I've been hunting with it since 1990 and everything I've shot with it was one shot. Using a 160 old style Grand Slam reload I shot a moose quartering towards me at just over 200 yards and it was DRT. Even I was impressed. I was a little hesitant to replace a 30-06 with it but never looked back. Its done everything I've asked from it.

I’ve owned and hunted with a 7mm/08 since 2006 (whitetail deer in Michigan). Previously used .30/06. I love the slightly lower recoil, the lighter weight of the rifle, and that it’s just as effective (my experience) as when I used the .30/06. My minor complaint with your presentation is your pronunciation of “7mm aught 8”. Nitpicking I know, but since you don’t say “3 aught 8” for the .308, why say “aught 8” when referring to the 7mm/08? That 10,000 psi pressure rating difference in favor of the 7mm-08 is the very reason it will outperform the 7x57. Oh yea one can become a test pilot so to speak and push ALL the published data until that 7x57 is doing what a 7mm-08 was designed to do from the get go. I'd suggest to stick with published data and keep your face and fingers.

Well, if you don't know what you're doing, you certainly have no business exceeding published data, but given the different design limits for 7x57 in the guns it first was loaded for and anything as strong as a M98 Mauser built in modern steel, you overstate the problem. Same with 6.5x55, to the point Vihtavuori runs two sets of data. One for old Krags and M96s, and a second, hotter set for M98s and newer strong actions. There is a bunch of velocity gained.

If the aught years are for example 1900-1909 or 2000-2009, and this cartridge was developed in the late 1950s, why does this video refer to it as a 7mm-aught 8? The 30-06 was developed in 1906 (i.e. aught 6) but the 7mm-08 was not. I'm confused, can someone help explain?

It’s just how I’m used to saying it. 7mm-08 is in reference to the parent case, the 308 Winchester. Most people call it the 3 “oh” 8. It should actually be 3 “zero” 8, because it’s a number not a letter. Lol. You could call it 7mm “oh” 8, or 7mm “zero” 8, but I’ve just always heard 7mm “aught” 8. Naming conventions with rifle cartridge designations don’t always make sense.

I’ve been trying to find a Tikka T3x Superlite in 7mm-08 for over a year. Looks like most manufacturers are not producing that chambering right now in favor of the 6.5 Creedmoor. Commercial 7mm-08 ammo is even harder to find.

@ultrahighgain412

@@hopefulballistics The Creedmoor is still riding a huge wave of hype. When the 6.5 Creed was first introduced as a hunting cartridge, sectional density suddenly became the be all end all and frontal area didn’t mean as much. We all know this isn’t true. What the Creedmoor is is a nearly perfect long range target round that makes a good hunting round with very manageable recoil…within its limitations. Just because you can put a hole in a piece of paper at 1000 yards doesn’t mean it has enough energy or expansion to be shooting at game animals at extreme ranges. At typical hunting ranges the 7mm-08 is the ballistic equal to the 6.5 but with more frontal area, more energy, and flatter trajectory. The Creed doesn’t begin to really distinguish itself ballistically until you get beyond 500 yards and in the opinion of many, it doesn’t have enough energy at that range. I’ll take the 7mm-08 with the 140 grain bullet as a hunting round for deer all day, and at around 2850 fps you’ll not experience extensive meat damage at close range while still getting good extended range capability if a longer shot is required. I’m in New England so that’s perfect for me. Anyway keep up the good content.
