When I was in boot camp and in MCT I asked my drill instructors and combat instructors this very question. Both responses were over the backpack straps primarily because of two reasons you said- first one; if taking contact, it is far easier to return fire if you need to remove the sling so that you can adjust your firing position. Second reason was the last one; far easier to mount over obstacles and traverse terrain by unslinging your rifle temporarily. Or you could do what one of my buddies did. Fuck up so much that he had his sling taken away and never had to worry about his sling.

When I was deployed overseas and now back State Side I like to use a D ring to clip my rifle to my body armor. With the right adjustments the rifle will not block any of the items on your armor and it sits just below the pocket of your arm where the butt stock would be placed for firing; not to mention it doesn't come into contact with your ruck at all.

@honorlogistics5383

@@LukePRTR A D Ring is just a quick if not quicker to switch over to the other side, but most importantly you don't expose unarmored parts of your body by raising your arms too high. If you want to be really high speed you could create a zip line (Paracord) across your chest for your D ring to follow so there is always a connecting to your person at all times. Random idea off the top of my head. I'm sure there are a 1000 negative comment for that. Either way good video. To each their own.

For sure I'm agree with you. In the spanish Marines (Infanteria de marina, the oldest in the world) I learned that to have the rifle sling between your body and the backpack was a good way to have and accident "eating the rifle". It's easy to impact it with the knees or the wall you try to scale. If you have to use your hands for another thing, you can need to left the rifle or let it in a position where it can not disturb you. Who in the hell can prefer to have the rifle sling under the backpack?

I dont have a set method at this time but I have noticed two points, 1) if you do over the straps method, the sling seems to pull my neck im a way which causes a small strain enough to effect my mobility and comfort because with my gear, it seems that the weight of the rifle ( when when Im Holding it) bares down on the back of my neck like a rifle necklace where as when I do under the straps 2) it evenly distributes the strain and weight across my back rather than my neck which is a lot more comfy on long patrols. BUT then youre restricted in where and how easy you can move your rifle without adjusting your bag. Its a risk vs rewards type Of deal, I havent weighed the options very much yet, ive used and tried both and they both seem to kind of have pros and cons, those are just the points I extremely notice.

@@oz-ng4tl the weapon just drops very awkwardly. To be precise, when you let go of it, it will hit you in the nuts. Plus the angle at which it hangs on your body is really uncomfortable if you have to move and cant have both hands at the weapon, because it will dangle between your legs and hinder your movement. Additionally, the weapon isnt stable and can also easily twist when you dont have your hands on it. Also, its hard to get it out of your way and moved onto your back, or your side, if you have to work on something with both hands. Single points have their right to exist tho, since they make you really agile with your weapon concerning shoulder switches and such. If you would be clearing a building in a deliberate/limited penetration type of way for example, you could consider using a single point.

British military teaches sling under backpack. Mainly because there is alot of throwing off your backpack, but I think that the slings used accomodate for this. They have a clip that you undo and makes it effectively change from a two point sling to a one point, which makes it feel like there is no sling but if you drop your rifle it will smack your knees in this mode.
@eatdriveplay

I do it over the backpack, but from under the right arm and across the neck. You can lift the rifle quite quickly without moving the strap over or under anything. Removing the backpack should be a secondary movement later on, if you have time to dump it.

I remember we neck sling the rifle and made sure the sling is short so the rifle sticks closer to the body and its easier to walk longer distances it also allows quick return of fire. also neck sling so nothing ever gets in the way when we need to drop the back pack. especially when its a contact drop low return fire and need to drop pack to move about its just much easier.

In my Basic Training we went on patrol and I wore my rifle sling under the backpack. When we came under attack(simulated, but with blank fire) I didn't take off my backpack because I was in a hurry to get behind cover, in my case a ditch. First of all I couldn't move freely laying in that ditch and also I couldn't really take my backpack off and because the "aggressors" were uphill my backpack together with my helmet prevented me from looking up and so I stupidly shot my instructor who was observing the drill with blanks. The attack came from the other side... :D

Some soldiers I know don't like using slings at all, believing their patrolling skills are more disciplined without it. Personally I've found the sling I've had to use has caused some sort of minor but fairly painful muscle damage around the shoulder so I like to patrol without it. Also I find it gets in the way sometimes when trying to take up aim, especially if it's under my daysack. However slings are a non-negotiable must when doing anything urban or cqb related. For the obvious risk of people grabbing the weapon. And I'd recommend using them for any type of casevac, unless you want to make the process even more difficult. As the guy in the video said, do what works for you. Don't listen to what senior soldiers tell you as gospel when it comes to any personal SOP.

Probably the way slings end up under is a frago where a several hour job suddenly becomes a multi day task and so people are just throwing their rucks on minutes before leaving. This can be fairly common for LE groups as well like SWAT where you grab your stuff to respond then suddenly there is a threat of some kind of unusual situation which requires you to grab an extra bag and you can't loiter in the staging area to reconfigure.

I have somewhat of an issue when it comes to the sling. I prefer to patrol and fight slingless, however it is great to have a sling when marching or rucking and it's nice to have a sling when my arms get tired or when I need to climb something or whatever. The problem is that, whenever I cross a heavily forested area the sling gets caught up in shit when I walk with the it hanging loosely. It can also fly behind a corner when pieing. I was wondering about just removing the sling whenever going out, however this requires the use of metal clips, and they are not that NLL friendly. The concept of holding your sling will obviously decrease accuracy and remove a lot of flexibility when using my rifle. Any ideas?
