I actually think Stephen's superficial mindset is pretty creative in a sense. By picking what looks good and ending up with a bunch of random specifications that may not traditionally "work", you do end up with your own unique sound. Rather the than looking for the tone, you let the tone find you. Who knows, you may even learn to love it.

+KDowah Amen to that. my lil Kustom dual 30RC has the most ASSAULTING, disgusting dirty tone & I felt, at the middle school age, that I HAD to get a pedal to "clean it up". Nowadays, I see the amp's tone as a superb raw black metal/grindcore/crust punk voicing. Guess I had to become a better player to understand,appreciate,&utlilize a "bad" tone
@samwich852
8 жыл бұрын
+KDowah , yeah I guess... I personally feel he's expressing what a lot of guitar players are like, myself included: you try to rationalize the functionality of a piece of gear for having spent X amount of dollars on it, but often times you buy it because it's pretty and shiny.
@KDowah
8 жыл бұрын

There's something so weird about the whole Axe-FX thing; everybody's got one now but no one seems to be able to replace their entire rigs with one although that's what Fractal Audio essentially says the unit should be able to do. Looking at Stephen's rig. He replaced his JMP-1, the Rocktron Intellifex and the TC2290 with an Axe FX (2 in fact), so that's 4 rackmount spaces worth of gear replaced by 4 rackmount spaces of gear (?!) So what I'm saying is, are people getting into the Axe-FX cos it sounds great or cos it's just the latest gadget to have?
@svehenen
9 жыл бұрын
One Axe FX is most likely for backup
@Silverjerk
9 жыл бұрын
degge You're looking at rack spaces in an extremely myopic way. Steph is now using just the Axe FX II, with a controller, and a power conditioner. He didn't just replace all of his rack gear, he also replaced all of his analog pedals, the inconsistencies and idiosyncrasies that come along with maintaining that sort of rig over time, and he even shed a cab -- probably as the result of being able to properly emulate the low-end he was missing using just the 1960 Marshall. That was a drastic reduction in space, complexity, and maintenance (and the second AF is simply a redundancy -- a backup). If you owned an Axe FX yourself (I own an Ultra and am somewhat biased) you would absolutely appreciate the diversity and simplicity it brings to the table. Where before I had to have a Triple Rec, Orange Rockerverb, VH4, and Marshall head (and their respective cabs) laying around, I now have one unit that effectively emulates all of that, both live and in the studio, and now I can spend my money on guitars, which is what I prefer to do.
