Great video Mark! When my grandsons reach their 6th birthday, I buy them a .22 rifle and teach them safety, shooting and cleaning. Because they selected semi-auto rifles, I teach them to clean them at around 500-700 rds, with special attention payed to the receiver and action areas. Their rifles stay in my safe till they are 12 yrs old. I only have grandsons, (5...so far), but a granddaughter will get the same. Cheers to you and Sam!

When using Lapua Midas +, I found it to be dirty and therefore, ran a bore snake through my Lithgow LA101 in .22 after every 10 to 15 rounds. With CCI Standard, less frequently and now that I am using SK Rifle Match, I run the bore snake through after each day's use before I put the rifle away. Seems to be doing well as I usually come home from the range after a shoot with either gold or silver medal. Once I did come home with a bronze medal. I only shoot in Hunter Class.

I guess we all clean according to the way we were taught. My dad was retired Army and believed in cleaning every time a gun was fired. I later shot for four years on my highschool's rifle team under three retired Army instructors, same regimen: clean, clean, clean! However, I have friends who've never thought about cleaning their guns, never... and yet they never miss, LOL! I think rimfire is more forgiving when it comes to the cleaning/accuracy ratio. Whatever works for the shooter so long as they're consistent.

I've got an old Remington Nylon 66 that my dad got when he graduated from high school and he passed to me when I did the same. I can guarantee that rifle has to have in the ballpark of 30k rounds through it and I don't think it's ever been cleaned once... LOL I haven't shot it in a couple years but that was my squirrel and rabbit gun growing up along with just the weekend plinker but my dad would get mad if I didn't hit the squirrels or rabbits in the head because it would waste meat and he very rarely had to get mad because that little rifle would shoot lights out. I don't do the rimfire competition thing but if that little cheap rifle can be shot that much with no cleaning and shoot that good with iron sights and expensive competition rifle would have to do the same or I'd be a little upset!! LOL Great video as always keepem coming brother!!!

Good words there Mark. I ordinarily clean my Christensen Arms .22 after every range trip which is usually in the range of 100 to 150 rounds fired. It takes about 2 wet patches and it comes up clean. I brush the bolt out like you do. I suppose that means it's not all that 'dirty' but, in any event, I like knowing I'm starting with a clean bore and barrel. I have seen that with a cold/clean bore and barrel, regardless of ammo, the first round fired hits low and left from POA. The next 4 cluster about normally. It 'seems' (very unscientific assessment by me) that it likes 5 foulers to settle in and that's with all brands of ammo form Eley Tenex to Federal bulk box. Thanks for the video!!

I have found going from one ammo to another, takes about 5 shots to settle in, gets its own lube worked down the tube and then tighter groups.. Me it just a bore snake twice, shoot 5 shots and now it's ready to do a nice 5 shot ragged hole ... with SK flatnose that's very waxy...

The pistols were put in a sonic cleaner daily and magna flux check after every match. A bit of over kill but no part failure during the match. Thanks for the show.

How do you keep it consistently dirty, by never cleaning?
@VaMike9
2 ай бұрын
@mmgee There's no consistently clean bore as it changes shot to shot. However, in my humble opinion/experience, I've had better consistency with a fouled bore. Still, with that said, the bore is always changing from shot to shot. Usually, there is a certain round count where accuracy degrades. To each their own, though, what works for me is what works for me. You may have another way that works for you.

@@VaMike9 I shoot Benchrest, doing this long time I started at 1986 in those days no one ever cleaned a rimfire, I don’t remember ever seeing a cleaning rod at a match, nearly everyone that was winning was shooting Eley Tenex. Nowadays to shoot an ABRA 200, these guys are running two wet patches after each target, their idea of consistency. I would guess most rifle shooters wouldn’t even consider that to be cleaning…

Usually both my .22 and my .308 get a good once over after big hunting trips (4-7 days of roughing it, rain hail or shine) so the action comes out of the stock and all the leaves and crap cleaned out of the barrel channel. Mostly it's just a maintenance to keep a tool working and ensure years of reliable use rather than trying to finely tune a precision instrument

I would add: Semi-auto rimfires are NOTORIOUS for fouling the stuff behind the chamber too! I recently had to take down my Marlin model 60 and hose it down with carb cleaner... then use a toothbrush and a toothpick to clean the bolt. I was having weak strikes, and it was basically so much carbon buildup that the case head was standing off from the face of the bolt, so the firing pin was barely making contact with the rim. After a thorough cleaning she was back to shooting nicely. Of course it's less problem with bolt actions, but still - watch out for that carbon and soot building up on the bolt face.

I run a 10-22 in a Magpul Hunter-X stock with a nice scope, bi-pod and a couple other extra bits and bobs, it's basically a low-level pimped-out 22. It's not s super high grade rig, but it's more than the off-the-shelf fare, and I go through about 300 rdns per range day and that's about as far as I would go without cleaning it. But because the 10-22 is so finicky when it comes to action screw torque settings, I tend to run a bore snake most of the time. I just wish someone would build a 10-22 base on the flip-up upper design of an AR, so that you could access the receiver and barrel without changing the accuracy. I'm sure there's a way of having a trigger group that can mate easily into this type of configuration, I just can't for the life of me understand why it hasn't been done before. There's the 11-22 with a receiver that has a sliding top panel, and that's cute, but it doesn't let you access the barrel and I find that incredibly frustrating, because I've spent hours chasing he dragon at the range, trying to recover my ideal torque setting to get my groups back to clover leafs, and I thought to myself "this is just dumb!" Anyone with a lathes who wants to tackle this, I promise you it would send the entire market in the air!

Ive been shooting 50m Olympic disciplines since 2008 and attended the last 3 pqralympics for target shooting and I only clean my 22lr barrels once every 3-6 months with a pull through. As long as it's reasonably clean, doesn't have to be perfect. And, maybe get a loose fitting mop to swab out the bullet lube from the Tenex and X-Act I use that gets right in the chamber and throat area. That's about it... No bore scope or anything to check to see it I got every stitch of lead out or anything like that. Then I'll fire 5-10 rounds before I feel it's ready to go...

Personally I shoot ISSF prone rifle with an Anschutz 1913 supermatch with a barrel tuner. My cleaning procedure is fairly simple, a single dry patch to remove the bulk of burnt powder sitting in the barrel so I don't clog up my brushes. 3-4 passes with a bronze brush followed by a wool mop to pick up the remaining dust and finished with a clean nylon brush to remove any cotton fibres left behind by the mop. That's it! I don't feel I need to get any more intense than that as I'm only going putting lead back into the rifling anyway when i fire the first few fouling shots. 10 shots making a 5mm center to center group (including flyers)at 25 yards is good enough for me. That's with cheap ammo (£4.50 per 50). If I was at a much higher level representing my county even country if I dream hard enough and using eley tenex (£12.50 per 50) I'd probably be a bit more thorough. Right now the most important thing for me is range time to better my technique. I am regularly scoring 95 out of 100 and sometimes higher. I've seen a lot of argument about cleaning cleaning guns and I just settled for simplicity.

I clean my shotguns way more than my rimfire. I would clean more but I've heard the Ruger precision i have is better when it's a bit dirty and really all you need to clean is the bolt and the carbon ring in the chamber. Meanwhile any time i go Clay shooting i clean. That's minimum every 100 rounds or could easily be 400 rounds. That's being said i don't go the full depth if i only did 100 rounds. I just hate having plastic and lead fouling. Find the sooner you clean it the easier it cleans off.

Would jb bore paste or jb bore bright be too harsh on rimfire? On the chamber? The packaging of jb bore bright says “do not polish chamber walls; a too-slick chamber will increase case thrust against the bolt and can damage the gun” and I’m not sure if this is referring to centrefire or any chamber. I don’t know what case thrust means on the label, unless it refers to semiautomatic. I’m interested in giving my bore the fancy mirror polish.

My wife and I only shoot our .22 rifles once every 2-3 months so I always clean them after each shoot. But if I was shooting every week I wouldn’t be cleaning them after every shoot. My mate who’s been shooting for 40 plus years says you should only clean your .22 rifle barrel when the groupings start to open up.
