One amazing trick to fool sappers is, keep a turret in the open with a power conduit right near it. Make sure this conduit is not connected to main power line Before assault, connect the turret to this unpowered conduit using the "Reconnect" button on the turret. Sappers now won't consider this a threat. When they are in range or near the turret, reconnect the wire to main power line.

@@linaetlinda5832 Yep. They're great for funnelling them into a Manned Kilbox like every other sort of enemy in the game, and honestly that's exactly what I've done in every base since I learnt that fact. Generally I drop a bunch of turrets just within my perimeter walls or anywhere I don't want them to get to, then leave a gap in the coverage immediately behind the killbox with a few uninstalled ones on some shelves nearby. If the raid looks like it's going to get in then I have a few Pawns deploy them in the secondary box, then let them come in. And now I'm wondering if you can hide turrets from them behind closed doors, then have a pawn run down a corridor opening them up when the raid gets into the box... there's always that one pacifist you end up with from random events who refuses to pick up a gun or sword after all...

@@mbos14 Not sure if this was accurate when he posted this (pretty sure it wasn't), but Sappers avoid all turrets, powered or not. So no this won't work. Sappers always use "path of least resistance" and walls regardless of durability are considered very little (but not 0) resistance, and turrets (unpowered or not) are considered very high resistance. Example: If you have 2 turrets blocking every single entry point but one, but only 1 turret blocking a single entry point, the sapper will decide 1 turret = less resistance than 2 = attack there. Theoretically you could have a killbox made with turrets designed to kill sappers. You would just need that many more turrets AWAY from the killbox.

If sappers target one of your colonists' beds, couldn't you just make a room on the other side of the map with sleeping spots that you assign your colonists to when a raid comes? Then they will go there and you could safely deal with them.

Best tactic for sappers in my opinion is to have the generic kill box for the raiders but send out some colonists to long range the sappers before they get to your base and quickly flee to your kill box walls to have the other raiders follow in and ultimately die mortar shelling does sort of help but it’s pretty useless due to horrible aim in summary attack them first and quickly it’s probably your best shot than defending since raids tend to get MASSIVE
@phillycheeze7168

note-turrets dont need power to ward off sappers, you can build the turret and never worry about it again, you can surround you in-the-open base with a 2 layered wall with a turret in the middle, and force the sappers into a special area to kill the sapper easily, usually be spike trap

@infinitechoices1641

Just have small turrets everywhere but not near your kill zone (they suck horribly anyway), forcing all the sappers to go to the kill zone because it has the least defense and the least amount of thick walls. Also have your beds near the kill zone. Use a few uranium turrets and a bunch of snipers in the kill zone and its done. You can also just have a bunch of traps around your entire base for the sapper raid that happens once in a while, its very cheap since the raids are so rare. Only sappers will trigger the traps.

You didn't pointed the best method to fight sappers, using a 'ring' turrets setup around your base and leaving just 1 tile size unprotected by turrets. That's will be the only way the sappers will go in while the tight unprotected hall from turrets is defended by your colonist only using walls + sandbag and traps.

@@juniorthejust Thanks! Could you maybe explain how the difficulty scales through the game? I mean even when you play with Randy Random, you don't get raids with more than 1 or 2 raiders in the early game. I saw that events like raids have a strength value in the event manager that goes from 25 to 8000. My question is how does the game know what level of threat it should be sending in the event of a Raid/Siege and what is the strength of the raid calculated on? Wealth? Weapons/Defences? Proximity to hostile faction? The frequency is of course random (I once had a Siege and a psychoid ship crash at the same time).

Keep the mountain rooms below -18 degrees, keep the majority of the mountain rooms well lit and have a dark section way off in the back and create choke points throughout the base. Infestation spawns: park melee guys in front and shooters behind (throw in some grenadiers if you like the live dangerously) then collect insect jelly. If your running the embrasures mod it turns infestations into a turkey shoot. Personally, I use 3 wide corridors with chokes every 15 tiles or so. Embrasure + door + embrasure. Melee guy at the door, shooters stacked behind. Open the door to aggro bugs, shoot, when the bugs lose interest open the door again. Defeated a 270 bug infestation with 2 deaths (due to being sleepy and not paying attention).

When I did a solo tundra playthrough I eventually mined out a large room and put a bunch of heaters with the temp cranked up in it, then flipped the switch on during summer when the rest of my base was above the minimum spawn temp. All my infestations happened in that room. As a bonus you can put a bunch of cheap and highly flammable furniture in the room, open the door, chuck a molotov in, shut the door, and let the flames kill everything.

You can force sappers to go through your killbox by making the killbox "lower cost" than the sum of defense and movement costs of any other way in. Mainly this is done by adding two outer walls with a single space in the middle with spaced turrets. Ideally these turrets will never fire at anything because everything will go through the box, it's just a matter of balance.

For my mountain bases, all that I do, is place 5 or so layers of cavalry spikes/ barbed wire around the area that isn't the entrance to my killbox. Though the sapper may be able to get thru the traps, the rest of the raiders would keep getting constant damage becuz their AI makes them run around, back and through the traps. The sapper would most likely live and break a block of mineable granite or two, but they'd be quickly forced to flee, due to the others dying to traps. Sappers are basically the easiest enemy for me, followed by seigers. PS: using Vanilla extended

The first time I had a sapper attack they mined through a mountain toward a spot within my walls, but not within the mountain part of my base. I put a door at either end of it, and now when I get sappers they automatically go the same way. They knock the doors down and come in single file where it is easy for my pawns to pick them off as they appear. I use slate doors so I have a couple of in-game hours to assemble them. Edit: Granite is better, duh

Yeah, infestations are a part of cave bases apparently. I heard you can reduce the chances by digging out big areas on other mountains for them to spawn instead, but, that's not a guarantee. That's why I decided nevermind on a mountain base I'm gonna build a flat fortress.

I like to use wood walls surrounding mineable entry points. I create about a 5 tile buffer from the wood wall to my base wall/mountain wall. The wood wall consists of 1 wood wall piece, then one spike trap or IED, followed by another wood wall piece, then another trap....etc. all around the vulnerable areas. This forces the sappers to walk through the traps in order to access the main walls of my base, causing considerable injury and casualties. It's also not terribly expensive even for earlier games as you can use wood traps as well if you are in a temperate environment. However as you get access to more steel and granite, you should use those for the increased damage.
