@@AdamVsEverything this is interesting. I schedule rec time after two hours of work, in sets of 3, followed by "any" time, after each; like in real world breaks after work sets of two hours each. Usually this allows some down time for hauling and cleaning. -but it all depends on priority lists. for e.g: SA; WWRA; WWRA; WWRA; WWA; SSSSSSS. This also allows for day naps, and frequent breaks for meal times. As pawns consider rec tim to also be sleep / cleaning. they're weird like that.

Simplest method I use to ensure everyone is in good mood for combat, at the center of my base, I put 3 cabinets, 1 for survival meal, 1 for insect jelly, and 1 for wake up, when a raid occurs I will pause the game and draft my pawns, and look at their mood, if they need food, I'll make them eat survival meal, if they need recreation, I make them eat insect jelly, if they are sleepy make them take wake up, make sure to unzone the cabinet for your hauling animals, and to make the insect jelly last longer, don't make it part of your pawn regular diet, just use it only during raids 👍👍👍 The only pawn that can mess this plan is teetotalers, so make any of them do civil work only and not involved in combat 👍👍👍

I have a single phase schedule, and I do use work bars for 2x 4 hours per day. It starts 2 hours after sleep (to allow breakfast time), then finishes at 12 for lunch (anything schedule) and restarts from 2 to 6. It works well for me, also because it prevents the pawn from botching their sleep pattern completely, but the biphase schedule sounds cool too. I might mix both.

Like the guide mentions, there are basically endless schedule alterations that can work. The biphasic is stupid good for mood+inspirations, so is what I use on my 500% no pause playthroughs. If yours is already working well for you, then that is cool.

Surely you should set recreation just after they wake up. While asleep, mood wont change, even if they suddenly get a +20 it wont move until they wake up, therefore whilst asleep their recreation will be draining whilst not benefitting them at all, then they wake up with much less, if they did it after waking up they would have that last much longer until they next go to sleep
@AdamVsEverything

Read the other comments. This has been discussed a crapload. I prefer before because it is more 'self-correcting'. It doesn't matter that mood locks in during sleep. As mentioned in the other comments, do what is best for your setup or preference. Mine is explained in the video and the comments.

Adam and Smurph, thank you for your guides! (I discovered you because of a comment by Smurph on Reddit, so goodonya!) Question: is there a reason NOT to put recreation AFTER sleep, so that ending recreate early leads to slightly more productivity? For reference, I just hit 9:00, and you're discussing wasted rec time.
@AdamVsEverything
2 жыл бұрын
Since recreation does not force wakeup from scheduled sleep (unlike work or meditation), it is generally more 'self correcting' in the long run and more mood-promoting to put it before. Unless you know somehow the exact amount of sleep every pawn will get every day and at the exact times they will get it etc. Mood/etc freezes while sleeping, so they won't lose recreation mood while sleeping if that is a concern. Here is some additional info: ""I put the 3 example colonists on the standard, default schedule. Whether they do recreation in this example is irrelevant because all we are looking at is wake-up time and how much recreation to schedule to ensure 1 walking trip fill up recreation. On day 2, waking up, Chef Wakes up at 5h. Hunter and Constructor at 7h. On day 3, Hunter Wakes up at 5h, Chef at 5h, and Constructor at 7h. This isn't a particularly exaggerated example. It will get bigger gaps. But still, how much recreation do you schedule to ensure one walking trip? Sometimes they wake up at 5h, sometimes 7h? In the future, there will be 4h and 8h wake ups. Do you put it on bars 5, 6, and 7? When they wake up at 5h they will do recreation, fill up, do 1 task, then walk home and do recreation again. kzitem.info/news/bejne/1nqFm4trb4mIpII Of course, before sleep has virtually exactly the same problems with peoples jobs taking too long at times"" So, long story short - 'it depends', as always. I used after bed for literally thousands of in game hours, then, after switching to before, it improved the mood in my colony more. But that is with keeping my playstyle and base build etc in mind.

@19:13 Adam didn't mention why he put recreation first for quick sleepers. I'm guessing it's because they have higher odds of finishing sleeping before the hours are up, (ie, sleep 4:30 or less instead of 5 hours flat), so putting recreation before guarantees that they always walk-recreate-sleep-walk instead of walk-sleep-walk-recreate-walk. Superb guide. Getting a ~+15 mood and bypassing ~-15 social mood penalties looks like a great choice in exchange for 20% productivity. Unless one is playing with time based wealth progression, bad events scale off wealth (primarily made from productivity) and are only unsurvivable when combined with mental breaks (due to low mood), so I can see why the biphasic approach is so powerful on the higher difficulties.
@AdamVsEverything

@@AdamVsEverything if you're worried about long jobs like hunting going all the way through the recreation time, putting it after sleep can work... And you can avoid that extra walk trip from someone waking up early by deliberately shorting their sleep schedule. If they have 3 hours set to sleep followed by 3-4 hours recreation, they'll sleep through whatever parts of that recreation they need to for rest, but then always begin recreating immediately without a wasted trip.
@Wise_That
Жыл бұрын
@@PopeGoliath Thank you, I feel like everyone else here is missing this. Sleep 2 hours, recreate 4 hours is SO much better than 2 rec 4 sleep, because a colonist will stop recreation to sleep, but won't stop sleeping to recreate. A pawn who has recently recreated and doesn't need the top-up (say, for example, they recently took drugs), will attempt to go back to work during a rec period, which is bad if sleep is next. So you should put rec last and make it longer. Meanwhile, if you put short-sleep, long rec, a colonist who is very tired can sleep in over their rec period without issue, as long as they wake up with enough time for 1 bar's worth, while a colonist who is well rested will only take the 2 hours scheduled and then do whatever rec they need, maybe only 1 bar's worth, and then go to work in one trip!

Thanks for the guide but I've been getting a lot more "ate without a table" mood debuffs on the biphasic schedule and I'm not sure why. The bedrooms, dining room, and freezer are all next to each other

great guide dude, ive been playing like 250 hours and have just started wanting to play on harder settings, the other day i started playing with scheduale a bit and this will make a huge difference in not getting wiped due to mental breaks mid raid.

I never really used schedules for a loooong time. …that is until I started using royalty psy-casts more frequently.. it was a little frustrating to see pawns not do important tasks (even research) in favor of meditating for hours on end the instant their focus dropped below the desired %

This is particularly interesting as my GF and I sleep with a polyphasic sleep cycle. Nice to see it in gaming for the first time, essentially! Its rocks btw.

I have almost 1000 hours in Rimworld and this is mind-blowing. I've been playing it wrong this entire time.

I think productivity is higher for the biphasic in the long term run, less breaks and higher mood will play out in your favor when conflicts are resolved faster, people heal faster, and your colonists aren't tied to events outside the storyteller. I wonder though if slightly staggering the schedules by an hour or so from colonist to colonist will have a higher benefit if everyone is always up and at em.

@@AdamVsEverything Always happy to support man, having friends make wins makes me happy in a weird way these days, proud might be the word, but not in a bad way, just like 'yeah! he's kicking ass, GOOD for him!' type of a way, no matter how I try to write it, I just feel like it comes off wrong, hopefully you get what I mean and cheers brother!

I really enjoy the way you do your guides. If you're looking for ideas of potential future guides, a short guide for confort could be really cool, i think a lot of people could use the informations (How the bar works, how the quality of objets like chairs and beds affect it, the strategies to optimise it...)
